Celebration in Pune

by Shirin Venkat

International Yoga Day was on Wednesday this year, and as we at the Swami Rama Himalayan and Yoga Centre in Pune, India, celebrate our Anniversary on the third Sunday of June, we combined the celebration.

The preceding six weeks had been filled with activity personally for me. I had the privilege and good fortune to deliver my twin grandchildren! A girl and a boy! The Guru was pleased with me I thought, when I suddenly realised but what about my gratitude?

The first week of June then became one of preparing for the event.

My young resident doctors who train to become Consultant Obstetricians and Gynecologists were attending Joints and Glands Exercises, Pranayama and Meditation. We met at 7 am in my clinic every day, and as a reward I took them for breakfast at a popular joint opposite. Then to the hospital for work just alongside.

They are quite used to such an unusual training as we begin the day with meditation for 3 minutes every single day at the labour ward. One of the consultants even remarked "These doctors may or may not start hospitals but will surely start an Ashram!"

Even the management of Ruby Hall Clinic graciously lent their premises and sponsored the breakfast for the event. The Chief of the Physiotherapy department was involved, and it was an interesting change for the hospital staff to have to assist in the health of the being other than just the body!

Sunday morning 18th June 2017 at 6 am sharp the security let us in. Arrangements had been made the previous night. We had 31 delegates who thoroughly enjoyed the workshop. The morning prayers and a video introducing Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama began the day. Joints and Glands Exercises, Pranayama and Meditation were the body of the event. A break at 9.15 for a sumptuous breakfast was followed by two sessions, one the badly needed digestive breathing, and second was a slide show on the Himalayas given by our initiate Dr. Kedar Munshi.

All in all a thoroughly enjoyable and educative experience for one and all. Humbly placed at the feet of the Gurudev Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati.
