“The next thousand years will be whatever you have chosen today to make of them. Uproot the thorn bushes now; plant the lilies instead and the time paths of your generations will be paved with soft fragrant petals, each petal an achievement from your labor at interior purifications.”

In the article “On the 2019 Sangha Gathering” in this newsletter, Swami Ritavan Bharati brings to our mind “The Perennial in the Millennium” by Swami Veda and other elements in the path of yoga, and he also informs us about the 2019 Sangha Gathering, which is scheduled to take place 25th February - 5th March 2019 at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) in Rishikesh, India. The article contains a link to the YouTube video “Interview with Swami Ritavan Bharati” and the transcript of what he says in the video.

In the article “Significance of Yajna,” Swami Veda mentions the concept of life as an offering [yajna].We would be interesting in hearing comments/observations from those who have embraced this idea on what it means to you and how it has impacted your life and practice. Please write to [email protected], attn. Carolyn Hume.

There will be a Mahasamadhi Anniversary Retreat and a Guru Purnima Retreat in July and a Program for Non-Initiates in August. These and other events can be found at our Upcoming Events.

Significance of Yajna

by Swami Veda Bharati

[This is an article that was written by Swami Veda Bharati, and it has also been published as a chapter in the book Yajña, published by Ahymsin Publishers, Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama, Rishikesh, India].

Book Cover: Yajna

Yajna, Homa or Havana or Agni-Hotra
Fire Offerings Ceremonies

The first word of Rigveda is agni (Cp. ignes, igneous, ignite, ignition). It was due to the Buddhist influence that the Hindus began to sculpt images 1. The Vedic religion was primarily that of worshipping divinities through the medium of fire. Very complex fire altars with geometric precision were built. What is now known as Pythagoras’ theorem is called Bodhayana’s theorem by many Hindus as it appears in Bodhayana’s text (14th century BC) on the construction of fire altars.

Death and Transition

by Swami Rama

[This passage has been taken from the book Path of Fire and Light Vol 2, pp 19 – 21, by Swami Rama, published 1976 by the Himalayan International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy of the USA].

The fear of death is one of our most prominent fears. We are all afraid of the word “death” and do not want to face the truth that we all have to die. Why do we fear dying? Death itself is not painful; only the fear of death is painful. When we take off an old shirt to put on a new one, we do not feel fear or pain; we are only pleased to have a new shirt. But the thought of taking off our body brings fear.

This is the way of the world.

2019 Sangha Gathering

by Swami Ritavan Bharati

[The video “Interview with Swami Ritavan Bharati” can be watched on YouTube. This is a transcript from the video. The video was recorded and edited by Lo, whom Tinyu Chen brought to Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama in March 2018.]

When we look to the future, we look at how can we create opportunities for students to deepen their practice or to become familiar with, to be introduced to practices that they may feel that now they are ready for, now they would like to understand themselves through such unique ways of these prayers, contemplations, meditation, yoga practices, so we’re coming together with a special gathering next year.

Visit to Burkina Faso

by Pandit Priyadarshan

It was such a wonderful surprise to receive an invitation to share the wisdom of the Himalayan Sages in West Africa from my dear brother Idriss Ouedraogo. The scale of his work and all the efforts he puts in spreading the teachings of the Himalayan Tradition and in support and promotion Swami Veda’s mission in Burkina Faso is quite amazing, and I was very fortunate to witness it personally.

Grace of Adi Shankaracharya

by Swami Ritavan Bharati

As one would visit their long lost ancestral home that is how the pilgrimage to the sacred Sringeri Sharada Peetham felt to me—coming home to this ancient seat of the Bharati Lineage, dating back for more than 1200 years. It was a trip of a lifetime, a trip enough to savor a lifetime, this lifetime. Visiting this island of knowledge as the very source of Adi Shankaracharya’s teachings, paying obeisance to the great Guru Lineage...

The Words of My Master

by Dev Kar

Searching for my Guru

God’s Providence, like the blue sky, is forever above us all. And so, after searching for two decades, it was Divine Providence that led me to my Guru, Sri Swami Rama. It all started after I read Paramahansa Yogananda’s Autobiography of a Yogi in the late 1960s. That book inspired me to join the Self Realization Fellowship (SRF) program of the Yogoda Satsang Society founded by Yogananda. However, my search for a living Guru continued because SRF’s distance learning material could not fulfill my yearning for direct spiritual guidance.

Then in the mid-1980s, I had the good fortune to visit Sri Satya Sai Baba’s ashram in Puttaparathi, India...

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice.  This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Question:

What is the role that the personal mantra (the mantra that is received during initiation) plays in yoga?

Answer:

Three have answered this question: Mrs. Lalita Arya (Ammaji), Michael Smith, and Carolyn Hume.
