Four Poems

Guided

Guided by my Guru
A Pilgrimage to take
Rugged hills and bustling towns
No impression make
In silence I sit wrapped in shawl
To hand out bananas
Our driver taking one
Here a boarder guard
With expression bland as he looks within
Driver not perturbed - both babble in a foreign tongue
Serene I sit with heart pounding
I hope he doesn’t ask for passport
As driver hands him a banana in exchange for a pass
The guard once more looks within. Our eyes meet.
In silence lowering eye lids I nod my head
Mala playing in my hand
Let through. At last, he gives a nod.
Such a tale to tell,
Our driver happily laughs.
Revealing all
I told the boarder guard the banana was Prasad
Prasad from Mata Gee
Silence broken
A bubble of laughter left my lips
Spirit lifted mala flowing
Light added to our journey’s flow.

Initiation

PDF Print E-mail
"The first stage in guidance is an initiation into a specific mantra... The word mantra means that which liberates the mind from all griefs, sorrows and agonies.  A mantra consists of one or more words chosen specifically for leading a particular aspirant to the final Truth.  Not every word can be a mantra.  Mantras are not composed by the initiator.  They have been handed down to him through his tradition, having been revealed to great Yogis and Seers while they were in a superconscious state.  The science of mantra is very exact, but very few people know or understand its significance.  Once initiated the disciple repeats and meditates upon his mantra throughout his life.  And gradually the mantra leads him to the stage of samadhi." – Swami Rama, Lectures on Yoga.

Initiation within the Himalayan Tradition

When Swami Veda Bharati writes about the chief components of the Himalayan system, he writes about Japa,

“This is not simply a mechanical recitation of a randomly-chosen mantra. The science of mantra is based on an understanding of sound vibrations which are primarily centered in the various stations of the kundalini and cannot be grasped without initiation. The ultimate purpose of japa is to go into supreme silence. One first absorbs the articulate level of speech (vaikhari) into the mental level (madhyama). Then one silences even that and enters the realm of pashyanti, the vibration of revelation, such that oneself may become the channel for revelation. From there one goes into the supreme absorption in the para, the transcendent, which is knowledge, as it exists in the Divine Principle. A preceptor trained in the Himalayan tradition leads the students into further and further refinements through nine major stages of mantra practice as taught in the tantric systems. Some of the variations of japa practice are as follows:

Intimacy

Our everyday life perspective and behavior is shaped by our sense of time. We think time passes, we need to do this and that…even: “I need to accomplish this or that”. We build up stress because of dates and ‘time passed”. We measure our life in time..so many years, so many days..yet what is this time….we measure in seconds, hours, years etc.

These measurements are certainly not the same in all cultures; for example we have Gregorian calendars, Chinese calendars, Roman calendars, sun calendars, moon calendars etc. They differ, i.e. the year in Balinese culture until recently had 180 days. The “New Year” is celebrated at all sort of points during a year, and in some cultures 2/3 times in “our year”.

Lord, Give Me the Strength

There is something that happened to me in 1998 that I'd like to tell you.

It was a very tumultuous time for me.  One day I was at my wit's end.  I did not know if I could make it through the day. Before I left for work, a little bird told me to open up Swami  Rama's book, Sadhana. I opened the book, at random, to page 69, and read this passage:

Meeting SVB and King Cobra

The only time I had the opportunity to meet Swami Rama was in 1996 at his Rishikesh ashram, Sadhana Mandir. He was not well but was kind to invite me and my friend, Dr. David Frawley (who was also accompanying me), for a brief “darshan.”  After a few moments, he fixed his hypnotic gaze on me and said, “You should meet Swami Veda.” The meeting was over with these words. He asked someone to bring us both to Swami Veda.
