New Minds for a New Economy: Shifting from Recovery to Renewal
by Swami Veda Bharati
Singapore, Friday, 4th June 2010
Lecture by Swami Veda Bharati (PhD)
Book launch: Human Urge for Peace: What is Right in the World?
Introduction
Over the last 5-6 decades, investments and human efforts have lead to many good developments, such as increase of literacy, growth of income and wealth, better infrastructure, alleviation of poverty, access to water, sanitation, health services, higher life expectancy, better food supplies, mobile phones, social networks, peace between cultures, increasing awareness of interconnectedness between several forms of life, etc. At the same time, we have seen how overconsumption and pollution are demanding their toll on the physical quality of our planet. Many organizations are facing challenges in leadership that - in general- are promoting non-sustainable outcomes. We all have witnessed how - for example - financial institutions, with more than 150 years or so of history, have collapsed due to greed-driven leadership, the lack of legal and regulatory frameworks and our ignorance to listen to our intuitive knowledge that always said to us "something is wrong: what raises, will come down someday".The financial crisis offered us an opportunity to renew our systems, our life-styles and our ways of decision-making. Enhancing our readiness for the irreversible climate change and natural disasters are our opportunities. Understandably, today we are in a rescue-mode to recover what we lost: employment, revenues, and resources. The recovery process threatens the sustainability agenda due to quick exploitation of natural resources and the damage we cause to our sources of life, such as water, air, soil, and relationships between people, communities and countries. But the recovery process also offers us great opportunities to do things differently.
We - whether as decision-makers or individual humans on this planet – have the potential to develop the skill of thinking holistically, of seeing the 'one-ness' of processes and linkages in life, with the highest form of concentration, by tapping from our tacit knowledge or intuition. While tacit knowledge is defined as the accumulation of experiences and skills within people gained through cognition in one's lifetime, intuitive knowledge goes beyond the archetype of thinking. Intuition is not dependent on the contact between 'sense' and 'object' and is therefore never false. In oriental philosophies, intuitive knowledge and practices are attained after a person’s mind is silenced and rebalanced through exercises.
Intuitive Knowledge
This knowledge requires listening to the inner call and mobilizing the 'treasure within' for creative and holistic planning, design, interaction with humans and nature, decision-making, leadership, et cetera. People and their leaders in knowledge extensive organizations have to develop the capacity to perceive the nature of the game and the rules by which it's played as they are playing. One should not try to solve anything with stress, but just to relax and observe the problem at hand. The authentic solution comes from the deeper layers of the mind, through stillness and not through force and tension.
That is what distinguishes creative businesses from business-as-usual organizations, and great leaders from good leaders.
Our collective awareness is moving towards better life-styles and greater authenticity. We see technologies emerging at the micro and the nano-levels, reflecting our intuitive understanding that “small” is beautiful, powerful, resource-saving, less polluting, and close to the immaterial and does not compromise levels of joy, connectedness and well-being.
Many of us, including our corporate, community and national leaders, have been wondering whether New Values, New Attitudes, New Rules and New Frameworks can help create a renewed world?
Should we focus on recovery or use this period of time to rebalance our minds, our actions and our organizations? How can minds be rebalanced to ensure our actions are authentic, holistic and help in creating sustainable life-styles and organizations? How can we see what is right with our world and build on that, instead of our curved focus on what is wrong with the world? How can intuitive life-styles, management-styles and leadership-styles help us in this? Can Singapore be a hub for learning and promoting such innovations?
Swami Veda Bharati, together with expert-participants (you) will seek answers for the potentials for renewal. Learning will take place through a lecture by our special guest Swami Veda Bharati, followed by questions & answers and dialogues.
Swami Veda Bharati will deal with the overall concept of the mind and how it can be prepared for renewal of our systems. He will share with us the concept of intuitive knowledge, its origins in Eastern and Western Philosophies, and its qualities and characteristics. He will provide an overview of methods and paths to awaken the creative force within each of us.

Swami Veda Bharati, formerly known as Dr. Usharbudh Arya D.Litt (PhD promotion at State University of Utrecht, The Netherlands, 1968) was raised in the five-thousand-year-old tradition of Sanskrit-speaking scholars of India. Swami is the Indian word for 'monk'. Veda means 'knowledge'. As renowned philosopher, he gave his first public lecture on the Yoga-sutras of Patanjali and the Vedas at the age of nine years. Within four years he was addressing audiences of up to 20,000 and teaching in colleges and universities. He has been teaching and lecturing for the last 52 years. From 1967 to 1972, he was Professor of Sanskrit at the University of Minnesota, USA, where he received the Distinguished Teacher Award. In 1969, Swami Veda Bharati met his Master, Swami Rama of the Himalayas who taught him the principles of Sri-Vidya, the science of the Universe, the science of Connections, the science of one's own Self. Upon meeting him, one is immediately aware that one is in the presence of an extraordinary person who has incorporated spirituality into his daily life.
