SRSG Ashram News

by Lalita Arya

St. Kate’s - A group of about 19 women studying holistic health visited and stayed at SRSG Ashram for a few days. I was surprised to learn that they were from St. Catherine’s University with campuses in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, USA.  When I heard this I made sure to make contact with this vibrant group of women. We met and had discussions on Meditation in Daily Life. Later they left for bonding with a Women’s College in Sonepat, Haryana.

Perth, Australia - We had the pleasure of welcoming a family from Perth Australia. The father, a grandmother and twin brothers, who had just had their mundan and yagnopaveet sanskaras (traditional head shaving and sacred thread ceremonies).

Kathak Dance - It was wonderful to discover that some of the younger girls at the ashram attend a dance school nearby. They have been studying Kathak, a popular classical dance form for almost a year and were eager to show off their steps.  Their dance costumes are a gift from KHEL donors.

Lohiri -  Is a celebration of welcoming warmer days with a bonfire at night.  This North Indian festival was observed on the night of January 13th with an aarti (waving of lights) before the fire was lit by residents of the ashram. Peanuts were roasted, with much laughter filling the air while both adults and children sang and danced around the huge fire. Swami Veda was missed as he is off with an ashram group to the Kumbha Mela being held in Allahabad.
