Silence Which Speaks Loudly about Body and Mind

by Dr. Prabhu

H.H. Swami Veda Bharati is the spiritual head of Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) ashram, Rishikesh, India. He has taken a vow to remain silent for the next five years.

To study the effects of meditative silence on neurophysiological changes as well as changes in brain waves patterns, we had two test sessions in the Meditation Research Institute (MRI) of SRSG, Rishikesh. The first test was carried out on 12th -13th March 2013 and the second on 12th – 13th June 2013.

It is planned to do tests on him every 3 months during the five years of silence.

Tests were conducted with international standard protocols and with very sensitive sophisticated equipment. 64 channel EEG signals were analyzed using EEGLAB software along with Matlab.

We are happy to report that we have encouraging results, which indicate that observing silence has a potential to modulate brain waves. They also reflect prolonged practice of meditation.

Following are our observations:

  1. In pre and post silence meditation we observe synchronized activity in occipital region with higher gamma [greater than 100Hz].These are now called Lambda waves. We noted lower delta waves between 0.5 to 1.0 Hz near pre-frontal and parietal region of brain. These are now referred as Epsilon brain waves. We observed more synchronized brain cell activity near parietal and pre-frontal region (areas of brain well known to those who study brain structures).
  2. During meditative silence we observed more intense synchronized cell activity around the Cz electrode which is the Position of ‘Bramha Randhra’ (the highest point of concentration through which the yogis also leave their bodies) according to Kundalini sciences.
  3. Lower frequency and more synchronized brain cell activity indicate that cortical arousal decreases significantly during silence meditation.
  4. Another noticeable observation is that within no time Swami Veda is able to influence brain wave pattern. That means the synchronization of cells and its region at very low delta and higher gamma waves were changed after switching from random thinking to meditation and vice versa.
  5. Lower delta always indicates deep sleep or ‘Samadhi' state, but Swami Veda's response and post test communication shows he was alert and noticing the smallest change in the environment.
  6. Recent research of Dr. Jeffrey D. Thompson indicates that Epsilon and Lambda brain waves are having same effects on consciousness and indicate same states of consciousness.

It is vital to note the following facts in connection with this study:

  1. Swamiji is more than 80 years old.
  2. He has 100% coronary artery blockage in 6 arteries and has already gone through a bypass in 1991.
  3. He has five ruptured discs in his spinal column.
  4. He has been diabetic for 36 years.
  5. He often has a nonstop work schedule of more than 16 hours per day.
  6. He has huge responsibilities of running the Mission activities.

Presently we are in the process of Heart Rate Variability and Oxygen Consumption Analysis.

This is written just for our in-house sharing; it is planned to prepare full scientific report for publication in scientific journals at the conclusion of the series of tests.

The Mediation Research Institute was established to test the neuro-psycho-physiological effects of meditation and the practice of silence. It was first developed by Dr. Manuel Fernandez, who managed and developed it for five years till 2011. Dr. Prabhu, a senior level scientist, has joined the Lab since January 2013 and is assisted by Pravin Soni.

Full reports of the Lab will be made available from time to time. This one is only about “what is svb doing in silence”.
