Swami Veda in Beijing

by Shi Hong

On May 18 Swami Veda appeared on stage at the first China International Yoga Conference in Beijing, China!

Organized by Yogi Yoga, China’s largest chain of yoga studios, the conference took place to coincide with the state visit to China by the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Among all the events that took place during the visit it is notable that Prime Minister Modi was accompanied by his host, Chinese Prime Minister Li Keqiang, to a mass demonstration of Taichi and Yoga asanas at the historical court of Tiantan, or Temple of Heaven, where imperial yajnas were held in the old days. It was also announced that a Yoga College, facilitated by both the Chinese and Indian governments, will be established in China with Yunnan University at the city of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province in the Southwest Region. In their official speeches, Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping repeatedly referred to the ancient Buddhist masters who traveled by land and by sea to spread teachings to China thereby creating spiritual linkage between people on both side of the Himalayas.

The Yoga Conference, from 16 to 18 of May and attended by over 500 yoga lovers from all over China, was held at the grand hall (“grand” is an appropriate description of the venue) inside the compound of the prestigious Diaoyutai State Guesthouse where many state events took place. Internationally recognised personalities such as Sri O.P. Tiwari and Dr. Shirley Telles were amongst the teachers and speakers.

Swami Veda agreed to take part in the conference at the invitation personally delivered earlier this year by the Founders of Yogi Yoga, Yin Yan and her Rishikesh born husband Yogi Mohan. Due to his physical condition, Swami Veda appeared on stage ‘live’ via Skype. The video was projected onto a cinematic screen in the hall. Shi Hong flew in from Taiwan the night before to translate on site the lecture into Chinese.

It was the last day, at 4 pm Beijing Time, the last session of the conference. The grand hall was full. People arrived early and sat orderly on the floor. Except for a short technical glitch, the internet connection was clear and stable throughout the lecture of nearly one and half hours. At the closing of the session, Yin Yan asked the entire audience to stand up and bowed silently to Swami Veda’s video image on screen to show their respect and gratitude.

Transcript of Swami Veda’s lecture (Swami Veda writes: “Recording at this end is being edited but is taking time.”).
