The Dance of Life

by Ahimsa Ishaya

A poem about the Divine Mother

This one maternal Self
dances in and out of form,
endless arms and legs
swaying and stepping,
appearing and disappearing.

Thoughts, species,
emotions, scents,
colors, meanings ---

None are permanent,
none are abiding.

The continuity is hiding within
the constantly shifting forms
that are, in turn,
hiding within one another.

Like sisters and brothers,
cousins and friends:
birth and death and birth again.

Like uncountable millions
of fluid matryoshka dolls,
all neatly stacked and packed,
one within the other;
a never ending wonder
of interpenetrating
function and form.
