Mandukya Retreat

by Manon van den Berge

Mandukya Retreat “The Yoga of Silence” guided by Swami Ma Tripurashakti Bharati (Ma Tri).

From 21-23 April 2017, we took part in the weekend workshop guided by Swami Ma Tripurashakti Bharati (Ma Tri) in The Beukenhof, The Netherlands.

On Friday morning 11 o’clock we arrived at The Beukenhof and as usual we first settled down and had a wonderful lunch together. After having had some time to relax i.e. a walk or social talk, we started with session 1 that was about the introduction of AUM. Summarized as follows.

During our stay we explored the 4 layers of consciousness (3 dotted lines) from gross to subtle. By understanding this picture one understands the whole creation: The four layers are Waking, Dreaming, Deep Sleep, and Turiya. These four states are equal to AUM and silence. The A is Waking/Gross, U is Dreaming/Subtle, M is Deep Sleep/Causal, the Silence after AUM is Turiya/the true Self. With all this the importance of practicing pratyahara became very clear again.

Ma Tri explained to us the importance of the diaphragmatic breathing. She patiently helped the ones who needed guidance doing this breathing exercise correctly. One can use this exercise for attaining deep meditation. Follow this link https://youtu.be/cc_fQMdKJqU

We ended the afternoons with a guided contemplation, yoga nidra, and systematic meditation by Ma Tri. After having a delicious dinner all together, we rested and then the next session took off and we again had a guided contemplation and systematic meditation. We went to sleep at 10:00 PM and started the next day at 6:00 AM. Each morning we started with a meditation and hatha yoga. Then at 8:00 AM we had breakfast and afterwards we rested or took a walk in the wonderful garden of Beukenhof. All blossoms were in bloom. Then the next session took off and after that we experienced a good yoga nidra exercise followed by a meditation. Then lunch again and the whole programme repeated itself. Sunday afternoon we ended the retreat with loving blessings for Ma Tri and her promise to come back to us next year.

Ma Tri is able to explain something so complex, the Mandukya Upanishad, in such an understandable language it was really a gift from her explaining this theory to us in way as she did. 100% sure that I will be there again when she guides a retreat from 4-6 May next year. This retreat will be about Yoga Sutras. Thank you so much, Ma Tri, and we wish you all the best.
