Dance Workshop in February 2018

Dr. Prakriti Bhaskar will teach a Dance Workshop dedicated to Lord Shiva as Nataraja at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) in Rishikesh, India, 12th -14th February 2018. Mahashivaratri is 14th February 2018.

Nataraja is “Lord of the Dance”, the dance being the source of the cycle of creation, preservation and dissolution, and Prakriti invites us, “Shiva Nataraja and the yogi dances…Let the mystique of Shiva, the primordial yogi who is also the supreme dancer Nataraja, lead you to the great auspicious night of awakening, MAHASHIVARATRI.”

This workshop is open to all. If you would like to participate, please contact [email protected].

Prakriti studied under three eminent dance masters: Guru Raghavan Nair, Guru Kadhirvellu Pillai and Guru Adyar K. Lakshman. She has a doctorate in Bharatanatyam with expertise in Cross Rhythmic Choreography, which was developed by her Guru Kadhirvellu Pillai. In 2007, she was awarded the prestigious ‘Senior Fellowship’ by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, for her research work on “Cross-rhythm Choreography and Nattuvangam”. She has been invited by prestigious institutes across the country such as the world renowned Kalakshetra College of Fine Arts - Chennai, to share her insights on dance with serious students of dance. In 2010, Prakriti was honoured with the Samaj Shakti Award for her significant contribution to the fine arts and in 2013 was awarded a doctorate for her thesis “Suddha Nritta - The aesthetics and mathematics of Rhythm in Bharata Natyam” by the prestigious Rabindra Bharati University, Kolkata. Carrying forth her guru's legacy, she has been zealously training students for over two decades at Shiladhish Art & Research Institute. Prakriti holds a Masters Degree in Fine-Arts and is a National Scholar. She specializes in rhythmic choreography and nattuvangam (the art of playing the cymbals).  She is an initiate and wrote in 2017, “An invocation to the guru lineage & my beloved masters Sw. Veda Bharati ji …Sw. Ritavan Bharati ji : You are the potent energy within the very seed of thought…You are the benign force that fructifies and manifests… All that comes through you, belongs to you…In all humility I receive …in all humbleness I offer it at your divine feet.”

She has graced AHYMSIN events with cultural dance programs and in 2017 taught “The Dance of Transformation” workshop at SRSG that inspired participants and gave them a deeper understanding of dance as sadhana. For more about the 2017 “The Dance of Transformation” workshop, please see:
