Diwali at SRSG 2018

“The sun, the moon, the stars and all the lights you can imagine in the entire external world are but fragments of that one great Light that is within you. it is the light of knowledge, the light of discrimination, the light of understanding, the light of life, the light of sharing and love, the light of Being that you are. ‘Thou art that.’ The light within is like a ripple in the vast ocean of bliss – that which we call Brahman, the Absolute, Infinity, the Highest. You yourself are that ripple; you are a wave. You should always have confidence that the light of life really is within you.”
~ Swami Rama, Path of Fire and Light; Vol 2 (pg 1)

What to Do With Your Mind

by Swami Veda

This is a transcript of Tape #2131 in the lecture series “Nature of Personality” by Pandit Usharbudh Arya, who became Swami Veda Bharati upon taking sanyas. It starts with a guided relaxation and then moves into the lecture.

Everyone sit straight. Try to make your posture as comfortable, as steady as possible, but keeping your spine straight. Sit in a posture from which you don't have the need to shift and move too often. Sit with your head, neck and trunk straight, and bring your mind's attention to where you are sitting. Withdraw your mind from all other places. Withdraw your mind from all other spaces, and become aware of the space that your body is occupying from head to toe. Become aware of yourself from head to toe. Withdraw your mind from all other times, from the memories of the past and from the anxieties of the future, and become aware of just this moment in time. Observe the passage of time, moment by moment.

Concentration

by Swami Rama

[This is an excerpt from Lectures on Yoga by Swami Rama, Himalayan  International Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy of USA, 1976, pages 80 – 82.  Later publications of this book are titled The Royal Path.]

In Yoga Science the analogy of a lake is used in explaining the mind. The mind is like a lake disturbed by the rising waves of thoughts or vrittis. The practice of concentrating helps to still the waves. And when the thoughts are stilled, the aspirant can see his own reflection in the water of the lake and realize his true nature. The purpose of concentration is to wash off all the aspirant’s impurities, gather together the dissipated energies of his mind, and then lead his concentrated mind along one channel to the state of superconsciousness.

AHYMSIN Board Meeting October 2018

Reported by Rajini Prakash

Family members of the AHYMSIN Board and Executive Committee (EC) came together for the final time of their three-year period in service on 20th October 2018. Fifteen members were present at the meeting.

Swami Ritavan Bharati opened the meeting with blessings and prayers. Speaking of the recently concluded Navaratri observations, he said, ‘our rituals that we concluded each day were part of the sankalpa in the sacred place, prayers to the devas and devis, sages and saints to bring focus, clarity and understanding. Tonight, our sacred space, the entire globe – that space, – there our hearts, our minds are one. It is the way in which we contribute to the Sangha, coming together in different ways – we now invite the Guru:

Griha Pravesh for New Dining Hall

by Amrita McKinney

A puja for the newly designed dining hall at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) took place on October 26, 2018. The new dining hall is spacious and bright and will be able to hold more people during busy times. The white marble floor and newly painted white walls add a soft, sattvic atmosphere to the morning’s gathering.

As more chairs were gathered to accommodate the 9:30 crowd, Swamiji joked that he had been assigned to entertain until the puja starts. In his gentle, mindful manner, Swamiji instructed us on the importance and symbolism of the dining room as sacred place. This morning, he told us, we have come together to sanctify the dining room and honor its role as a place of nourishment and sustenance.

October Seminars in Greece

by Sofia Foteina

Here are a few words about the seminars of Pandit Priyadarshan and Meena Bhatt in Athens, Greece, from the 11th to the 14th of October 2018.

Himalayan Yoga and Philosophy Seminar, by Pandit Priyadarshan, on the 12-14 of October 2018.

It was a detailed overview of what is yoga, what is the difference with hatha yoga, what is ashtanga yoga and raja yoga and that yoga starts with ahimsa (non-violence). The seminar was advancing through questions by Panditji that made us think about the possible answer. What people admired more was the huge knowledge coming out of a young and friendly teacher, who, for that reason he became a Pandit by Swami Veda Bharati and a Yoga Acharya (a teacher who prepares yoga teachers). His way of teaching was simple and spoken in everyday language, with practical examples. And hatha yoga sessions were relaxing and “turning us within”.

Journey Within

by Ajay and Charu Srivastava

It was a nice bright and sunny afternoon of Monday, November 5th, 2018, when we reached the Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) Ashram for our weeklong stay. We were made so comfortable when we reached the reception for check in and everything was almost kept ready and very soon we ensconced ourselves in our cottage. Being the first day we were told to relax after the lunch and settle down to be ready for the daily routine from next day onwards. However, the positivity in the ambience was enough to make us already relaxed and hence we continued with our participation in the remaining activities for the day- hatha yoga, silent meditation, and dinner, and then crashed out which was quite obvious.

Next day we started at 5.30 am with a session on joints and glands exercises followed up by a recorded guided meditation by HH Veda Bharati for new sadhakas. Being first time to the Ashram, we were taken for the Ashram tour to make us familiar with the surroundings.

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda, Swami Ritavan, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice. This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Question:

How are the Gunas and Karma related to each other?
