“If selfless love is freely given to children, they will respond spontaneously with love,”
Swami Rama in Let the Bud of Life Bloom [India | USA].

Swami Ritavan at Childrens Retreat SRSG December 20182018 ended with a youth and children’s retreat during which this picture was taken, and Amavasya Silence Retreats are now taking place at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG). Renovations also continue at SRSG. Please see articles “December Youth and Children’s Retreat” and “Updates on Renovation at SRSG” in this newsletter.

“Sprinkle silence out the windows of your eyes, of your senses, out of your heart and through your words. Convey your inner peace, stillness and emotional equilibrium.”
– Swami Veda Bharati in “Silence Is Golden

Mauni Amavasya is 4th February 2019.  Swami Veda invited us to observe this day with a “one-day vow of silence.”

“On that day, no driving (except for emergencies), no TV, no conversation, just self-observation, contemplation, japa and learning (1) to give love in silence while (2) learning to love silence.” – Swami Veda Bharati

The AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering 2019 will take place 25 February – 5 March 2019 at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) in Rishikesh, India. This gathering has been inspired by Swami Veda's composition "Perennial in the Millennium," of which Swami Ritavan Bharati has written,

"A passionate and profound lyrical poem of a mystic sage living among us,
whose vision beyond the horizons and confines of past and future presents a mirror.
A self-reflection of humanity full of heart and sweetness of life,
whose full-potential remains in the ability to love, to serve and to remember.
Remember the music of awakening,
Serve without name to make yourself free,
Love with the spirit of the saintly,
on this pilgrimage of appearance and disappearance.
Now, in reading - Listen, for the speaker is Thine, no longer mine,
Hear the flute of fate, the melody of meaning, and offer in the
pyre of purpose to Thee.
Shree Namah.”

Dance Workshop on “Invoking the Divine Within - Ganapati" with Dr. Prakriti Bhaskar is scheduled for March 5 - 8, 2019, at SRSG.

Himalayan Yoga Tradition – Teacher Training Program (HYT-TTP) offers two training sessions annually at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) in Rishikesh, India. The next session will be March 10-23, 2019.

Events at SRSG for 2019 also include two Navaratri Pujas, Guru Purnima Retreat, 4th Anniversary of Swami Veda’s Mahasamadhi, Retreat for Initiates, Sri Vidya Seminar, Breath Retreat, and more.

Please see the Upcoming Events or contact ahymsin@ahymsin.org for more information about these and other programs at SRSG.

The Perennial in the Millennium

Booklet Cover: The Perennial in the Millenniumby Swami Veda

The Perennial in the Millennium
by Swami Veda Bharati
Prophet, Soothsayer, Sage

What will the next thousand years be like?

I did plant thornbushes;
Won't you bless me with lilies as I wander in this time path?

I made of my offspring marauders,
Won't you pray for them to be wise
So they flourish, prosper, and sweeten the bitter seas.

Will they, or will they not?
What will the next thousand years of my generations be like?

Yamas

by Swami Rama

[This is an excerpt from Lectures on Yoga, Practical Lessons on Yoga by Swami Rama, Himalayan Institute of Yoga Science and Philosophy of the USA, 1976, pages 17 – 19. This book was later published with the title The Royal Path, Practical Lessons on Yoga.]

The Yamas are five restraints which regulate one’s relationship with other beings. They are Ahimsa or non-violence, Satya or truthfulness, Asteya or non-stealing, Brahmacharya or abstinence from sensual indulgence and Aparigraha or non-possessiveness.

November 2018 HYT-TTP retreat

by Pandit Priyadarshan (Pierre Lefebvre)

“A teacher of classes is not a teacher.  A teacher of people, a teacher of individuals is the teacher.  To whatever degree of spirituality and realization you have arrived, you bring people to that level, then you are a teacher.
— Swami Veda Bharati

This November, the HYT-TTP, Himalayan Yoga Tradition – Teacher Training Program, retreat was attended by perhaps the most diverse group of students we have seen, comprising 26 Level One participants and 8 Level Three participants coming from a total of 20 countries (India, Canada, Australia, Morocco, Italy, France, China, Malaysia, Sweden, Switzerland, Spain, Jamaica, Trinidad, Burkina Faso, Germany, Thailand, Mexico, United Arab Emirates, The Netherlands and the United Kingdom).  There was a truly unique international flavour, all five continents being represented.

The Level 1 students were engaged in a comprehensive roster of classes in all aspects of yoga science: hatha yoga, pranayama, relaxation, meditation, philosophy, psychology and much more, with a highly qualified teaching staff.

Yoga of Life Retreat in Thailand

by Little student of Himalayan Yoga Meditation Tradition

“Yoga of Life” makes a life worth living. Summary of the retreat in Thailand on December 15-18, 2018

When preparing for a retreat that was to take place in December 2018, almost a year ago the title “Yoga of Life” naturally came to my mind. And it fitted very well with the retreat as I felt that many participants came with a question “What life is all about?

Personally, I felt that it was also a fit to the mission of our beloved Gurus and tradition, whose only intention is to free people from their fears (born out of ignorance) and lead them towards realization of their own essential/divine nature.

We were so lucky to have a “trio” of outstanding teachers compassionately agreeing to lead the retreat for us.

Mauni Amavasya 4th February

by Carolyn Hume

You are invited to observe Mauni Amavasya (Silence Day) on 4th February 2019. This is a practice Swami Veda Bharati encouraged us to undertake. Mauni Amavasya is an annual event, and in 2019, it will be on 4th February.

Swami ji wrote:

...there is also an annual silence day in the traditions of India. It is called Mauni Amavasya. Mauni means ‘of or for silence’, and amavasya means ‘no-moon day.’

It occurs on the no-moon day of the Maagha month in the Hindu calendar when sun and moon are both supposed to enter the sign of Capricorn (makara rashi)…

… … …

In 2020, Mauni Amavasya will be 24th January.

December Youth and Children’s Retreat

by Tarinee Awasthi

Yoga Youth and Children’s Retreat (December 24th-30th, 2018) at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG)

Just like the past few years, in accordance with what Swami Veda Bharati-ji willed, in the last week of 2018, Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama was filled with the sounds of children as they were exposed to the routine, ethos, and spirit of the ashram and as they explored the physical space as well as the possibilities inherent in the subtler manifestations of the Ashram.

The day they arrived, Swami Ritavan Bharati-ji led the Guru Puja, which served as a keynote for the entire retreat, imbuing it with a certain sacred joy. The day also marked the beginning of two things which remained constant through the Retreat: a fire offering in the evening led by Swami Ritavan Bharati-ji, followed by lessons in meditation from Swamiji in the Initiation Room. Swamiji’s presence and his love, which was soaked in the grace and blessings of the Lineage, were an inexpressible privilege shared not only by the children, but also those of us looking on.

Christmas was marked by worship offered to Mother Mary in the morning, and Swamiji drew our attention to the resonances between seemingly diverse traditions, which are perhaps accessible when the seeker is truly immersed in the experiences of any one of them.

Updates on Renovation at SRSG

by Rabindra Sahu

2018 has been one of home cleaning and reviving at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG).

We started the renovation work in the ashram last year and received overwhelmingly loving and generous response from our family members across the world. On behalf of Swami Ritavan Bharati and the entire ashram community, we offer our heartfelt gratitude to allthose who have sent their loving support for our beloved Swami Veda’s mission work to continue at SRSG for many decades to come.

We are excited to share the progress with you all now. The second phase of construction is already going on, while planning for the third phase is underway.

We are thrilled to share that most of the projects started last year have been completed already, including the new Kitchen Building (with all new equipment), renovated Dining Hall, retaining wall near cottages 22-30, the pathway from the Mandala Office towards the Knowledge Centre, new toilets in the main building and near the Dining Hall.

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda, Swami Ritavan, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice. This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Question:

We feel sometimes that nothing is happening even after doing meditation....but actually we are clearing our past samskaras...is it right what I think?
