The Three Shocks of the Buddha

by Swami Veda

From the lecture series: Unblocking Yourself

People are interested in finding out how we free ourselves; how we unbind ourselves from our state of bondage. It is easier to loosen the knots if you know the structure of the knot; then you don't have to spend hours unraveling it. In the process getting more knots and binding ourselves in new ways. If we understand the process by which we bind ourselves, two things will happen. First, it will be easier for us to loosen the existing knots, and second we'll avoid tying further knots in the future. The process of coming into bondage daily, every new bondage, each day, is a subtle and sinister one.

Book: Sadhana, The Path of EnlightenmentKundalini

by Swami Rama

(This is an excerpt from Sadhana, the Path of Enlightenment, Yoga the Sacred Science, Volume 2, by Swami Rama, Himalayan Institute Hospital Trust, 2011, pages 258 – 260.)

Kundalini is a word that is frequently used but seldom understood. It has a highly secret meaning according to the highest order of yoga and other branches of Indian philosophy and Tibetan and Chinese philosophies. You cannot understand the deeper spiritual aspects of hatha yoga if you do not understand kundalini.

Devatma Shakti is another term used for kundalini. Deva means bright being, and atma is the soul. Shakti means “power,” and is the power behind manifestation. There are various levels of powers, and not every power is kundalini. The individual soul or jivatman manifests and functions with the help of Devatma Shakti. Whereas the individual soul has individual Kundalini Shakti, the Cosmic Soul is Paramatman (the Absolute Self, Brahman). Qualitatively they are the same, but not quantitatively. As the power to burn cannot be separated from the fire, Shakti cannot be separated from the individual soul.

Guru Purnima Blessings
from the Himalayan Sages

From Swami Ritavan Bharati:

“Sacred goblet where full moon flooding soma forms sahasrara atop your skull. There the guru sprinkles inspired sweet streams of poetic speech, the voice of your soul, as divine sound - mantra. These streams are beyond the touch of death; These are the beautiful waves (sundarya-lahari), the waves of Infinity that touch the shores of your mind. Shreem, unto that Guru-Shri, my prostrations, my homage, my surrender, my ‘not mine’ is offered in love.”

So it is with the layers of the mantras that are granted to us by the lineage, by the Guru-parampara that constantly infuses into our minds the sparkling rays of intuitive wisdom, knowledge, awakening.

Japa, Silence and Atma-tattva-avalokanam

Part 4

by Stephen Parker (Stoma)

[This is from a transcript of a session with Stephen Parker (Stoma) at the 2019 Sangha Gathering at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama. This is Part 4 of 4 parts. To read Parts 1 or 2, please click on appropriate part: Part 1, Part 2, and Part 3]

Question: What is the distinction between atma-tattva-avalokanam and ishvara- pranidhana. Is it a matter of perspectives?

Stoma: The distinction is really just the words. Ishvara pranidhana is a particular aspect of it. If you are watching for the essence of atman everywhere around you, of course you are going to be placing your mind close to divinity which is the real definition of ishvara pranidhana. And in response to that meditation on your part, Patañjali says or Vyasa says ishvara does its abhidhyana, its responsive meditation, in your mind. So it isn’t that we do meditation, we prepare the seat, and then the Guru comes and meditates our mind. That is really how it goes most of the time, at least for me.

Question: You said something about going from vibration into pulsation into point and silence and beyond. How is that connected to this time lapse, this time sensation becoming very slow? How does the process of making japa subtle relate to the perception of time slowing down?

3 Year Anniversary – Initiation

by Joe Garrison

OM

Dear Family,

3 years ago we all went up to Randall's house in Los Angeles - Linda Billau came from Minnesota for the weekend: Day 1 - Yoga Nidra, Day 2 - Initiation. Mary Brown and I were talking, and we told both each other - "I've been looking for this all my life." I always remember us BOLTING out to go get coffee! It was so funny - we white knuckled it for the entire weekend - and the wonderful part was learning we were in the same space dealing with such similar things.

World Yoga Day Celebrations in Pune

by Dr. Shirin Venkat

World Yoga Day Celebrations at the Swami Rama Yoga and Meditation Center Pune

Jai Gurudev!

It was a conscientious and compact group of seventeen that met at 7am on 23 June 2019 to celebrate the World Yoga Day and the 8th anniversary of the Swami Rama classes. It was held at the Cloudnine Hospital Pune. The hospital had provided the space as well as a sumptuous breakfast for the event. We are grateful.

The participants were from all walks of life and followed every instruction with attention and zeal. Dr. Shirin and Durgeshwari enjoyed sharing our rich and inspiring tradition. All felt the Grace of the Guru flowing during the meditation, and there was a palpable silence. The 40 minute meditation lead by our beloved Swami Veda Bharati seemed as though they passed in five minutes. “Was it really 40 minutes? It seemed more like 5 minutes” was the response.

Yoga Day Program at the New Bangalore Centre

The International Day of Yoga was celebrated at the newly opened Bangalore centre - Urdhva Yoga over two days with different groups.

The centre opened its doors to students in March 2019 and has been slowly and steadily adding students to the daily hatha classes.

Swami Veda’s Message for International Yoga Daywas the inspiration behind this program, where we strived to learn deeper aspects of yoga according to ancient texts and what can yoga grant in the contemporary world.

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice.  This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Question:

I think, Kundalini yoga is all about tapping into your spiritual energy, raising awareness, and a whole lot of yogic breathing....Is it so ??

Answer:

Swami Ritavan Bharati, Michael Smith, Stephen Parker (Stoma), and Wolfgang Bischoff have answered this question.

International Day of Yoga, Sabah, Malaysia

by Henry Yap

Blessings of Gratitude

Blessings of gratitude to the Guest of Honour for his presence and support, along with many blessings of recognition and appreciation to the teachers and members of the “Himalayan Yoga Science Society Sabah” (HYSSS), (Persatuan Himalayan Yoga Sains Sabah), founded by Swami Rama of the Himalayas, providing adept yoga teaching for children and adults, as well as inspiring satsang sessions revealing the ancient knowledge of the Yoga tradition.

Yoga, a discipline for the fullest development of the soul, mind, and body is a scientific, holistic approach to life that helps to keep the body and mind fit.

This event though held in Sabah, in conjunction with the UN International Day of Yoga, is indeed very commendable.  The participation by those that you have trained, especially the children speaks for itself.
Blessings and congratulations on your continued celebration of this world wide United Nations International Day of Yoga since 2015.

Selected Yoga Sutras of Patanjali

It is general knowledge that the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali is the treatise on Yoga that is contained in 196 terse verses or aphorisms and divided into 4 chapters − samadhipada, sadhanapada, vibhutipada and kaivalyapada. Through the commentaries of scholars and researchers we are able to understand these verses.

In this brochure a few of the selected sutras are presented together with the commentaries.

Sutra 1.2        yogash chitta-vrtti-nirodhah
Yoga is the control or dissolution of the modifications (vrtti) of the mind-field.

A Prayer

by Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Mohan Swami

[We were blessed with a special prayer and loving message from Tan Sri Datuk Dr. Mohan Swami Ji on the occasion of Swami Veda's Mahasamadhi Anniversary and Guru Purnima. We have received his permission to use the same with others for inspiration.]

Prayer to help all these lost and lovely souls who come to the Guru ashram

O Guru O Guru

May thee provide salvation in times of need
May thee prompt thy disciples of their duties to heed

May thee pry their eyes and hearts open
May thee polish their egos till unroughen

May thee, for those who come, give them light
May thee, for those who realise, make them right.

O Guru O Guru
