"By loving all, a human being practices all the other great principles such as non-violence, truthfulness, non-possessiveness, contentment, and so on. Love and negativity cannot coexist. Love for all human beings purifies one’s heart. As a result, one’s consciousness expands. One redefines one’s conception of love, and instead of loving human beings alone, all of creation falls within the range of one’s love. The thread of love unites all the diversities into one non-dual, unitary consciousness. By loving all, one loves the universal soul, God. As supreme love unfolds, conflicts, differences, hatred, jealousy, and selfishness disappear once and for all. One who loves all, considering this universe to be a divine manifestation of the supreme Divine Force, attains knowledge of the non-dual, absolute Reality. He realizes the universe as his own elaboration."

Swami Rama, A Call to Humanity.

Mauni Amavasya (Silence Day) is 11th February 2021. Swami Veda Bharati wrote:

“...there is also an annual silence day in the traditions of India. It is called Mauni Amavasya. Mauni means ‘of or for silence’, and amavasya means ‘no-moon day.’”
and
“...I would like many of my friends to set aside at least one day to share the silence with me just as you have shared the full moon day for an hour each month for more than a decade now.
“...If you plan from now, you can arrange your worldly affairs in such a way that they do not interfere with your one-day vow of silence.
“On that day, no driving (except for emergencies), no TV, no conversation, just self-observation, contemplation, japa and learning (1) to give love in silence while (2) learning to love silence.
“May I ask all our swamis, initiators, spiritual advisers, teachers, centre leaders to kindly popularize this concept and take this year to prepare the people to undertake this one-day vow of silence.”

Condolences to Indu Misra and family on the passing of Sudhansu Sekhar Misra (husband of 65+ years, parent, grandparent, and sadhaka) on January 14, 2021. The family has given generous and dedicated service to The Meditation Center for many years. “Dearest Indu, With hands-folded in namaste, blessings of condolence; with arms embracing in comforting consolation; with swami shawl of love surrounding you in silent prayerful sentiments; memories of long-life together fills your heart and fulfills the satiety of all karmic debts, rest now in the still-comfort of the Lineage. May Guru grant you the grace of peace and understanding, with all affection, swamiji”

The next Full Moon Meditation will be 28 January 2021. You are invited to sit in meditation for an hour wherever you are. Total beginners and longtime practitioners, non-initiates and initiates are welcome. If you cannot sit for the entire hour, sit as long as you are able; as Swami Veda has said, "Let the quietness of the mind continue even after you rise...”

“The full moon meditations are an opportunity for us to come together in connecting with the universal mind-field bringing unity, harmony, peace and love. Go into your silence; exhale-release, inhale-accept, forgive & fulfil, with purified heart and mind receive the blessings of the Lineage.” – Swami Ritavan Bharati

Error Correction: The article “Yamas” by Swami Rama in the January 2019 edition of the AHYMSIN Newsletter had an error which has been corrected. The article was corrected by adding the word "not" in the sentence which now reads "Brahmacharya should not be interpreted as repression of all sensual urges."

Stories and Parables of Power

by Swami Veda

[This is an excerpt from The Light of Ten Thousand Suns by Swami Veda Bharati, Section “Stories and Parables of Power,” pages 33 – 36.]

Do you seek power? Do you wish to conquer your world? Is the whole world your opponent, youradversary? Do you seek the power of wealth and control over others? Does the world seem full of unsympathetic, unjust people, always criticizing you, attacking you? Are your anxieties and worries of the past or of the future?

Collective Happiness

by Swami Rama

[This is an excerpt from A Call to Humanity by Swami Rama, Chapter “Self-Realization,” pages 106 – 109 in the 1988 edition.]

History reminds us that a particular society, community, or nation retards its growth when, out of rigidity or omission, it does not acknowledge its weaknesses. Fearing humiliation or suffering from inferiority complexes, such a society justifies its weakness, by either hiding it or pretending it is a great quality. Such a society or community moves towards its own doom. A human being or a society purifies itself, not by hiding its defects and weaknesses, but by removing them. For human mistakes and weaknesses, religions have offered a system of penances, but according to the Upanishads, there is no better penance than the resolution not to repeat the same mistake.

The “New Meditation Hall”
is almost complete!

by Rabindra Sahu

As you all are aware, we began constructing a new meditation space above the existing Meditation Hall at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) in the summer of 2019. While the world was forced into a ‘pause’ in 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, including the SRSG ashram, we were still able to continue the construction work for the “New Meditation Hall”. No, we will probably not be calling this beautiful meditation space – ‘the New Meditation Hall’!

We take this moment to share glimpses of this meditation space with you all here and to extend our deep and heartfelt gratitude towards the many loving and generous family members who made this possible. It was the continued support and contributions of many members of the AHYMSIN Global Sangha who helped manifest the vision we had for this Hall. Although the construction in the Hall has been completed, we still have some work left here, including furniture and furnishings.

Narada Bhakti Sutras

Submitted by Divya Gupta

Narada Bhakti Sutras - Treatise on Love and Surrender

Sitting in his hermitage of Badrika-Ashram, one day Sage Ved Vyasa asked Sage Narada, “Man seeks freedom. This seeking without devotion is dry. Many paths lead to freedom but they have importance only in so far as they are auxiliary to devotion. I, therefore humbly ask you to share with me the virtue of devotion.” Sage Narada said, "I shall explain devotion to you in the form of sutra (aphorism)." Saying so, the sage delivered a discourse on devotion in 84 aphorisms, later known as the Narada Bhakti Sutras. He also blessed Sage Ved Vyasa and said, "Its full explanation shall be given by you in the ‘Srimad Bhagavatam’ Mahapurana later.”

Within this text, Sage Narada explains the perfectional stage of unconditional love and devotion and the ways to achieve this state; gives examples from other Vedic personalities on the subject matter; cautions against the obstacles that come up in developing bhakti; and finally explains the nature of selfless love and the different forms of attainment to the Supreme bliss.

Yoga and Family Life

by Sofia Foteina, John Sellinger, and Divya Gupta

The dual purpose of life, as taught in the ancient tradition of yoga, is the experience and enjoyment of the limited manifest reality; and the realization of the infinite in moksha (spiritual liberation). Family serves as a core foundation of both of these purposes and is the first experience, as well as the training ground, of relationships. The roles we play in the family (spouse, parents, children, siblings, grandparents and grandchildren, etc.) then become foundational elements of our personality.

This workshop is offered to all who are interested in gaining and exchanging inspiration in the spiritual purpose of family life as taught by the Himalayan Yoga Tradition as taught by Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati.

New SRSG Organic Garden

by Divya Gupta

We started an organic vegetable garden at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) this winter.

One step towards sustainability!
One step towards yummier, healthier food!

While Mrs. Kirti Dixit continues to oversee the gardens in the ashram, our head gardener - Mr. Rampal Singh is planning and tending towards the vegetable gardens with his vast knowledge and experience in vegetable farming.

Motto for All Future Silence Days

by Swami Veda Bharati

Motto for all future silence days (from some old lecture of mine):

Eat only when you are fasting
Be still while running
Speak only when in silence.

The second Sanskrit sutra here is left untranslated to keep it secret. Those who are true practitioners will find out and learn.

Dear Yoga Mentor, My Question Is…

Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice. This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.

Question:

Mostly, I do not get distracted or waylaid by rose petals or mud slung at me.... except when my mother does it. I need advice! The three golden circles don't work with her, either. What am i doing wrong? Why am i failing?

Answer:

Carolyn Hume has responded to this question.
