“Attending a course is one thing; assimilating the teaching is something else.
That takes many lifetimes.
Do it.
What is the secret of success?
There are three secrets.
The first secret is . . . practice. The second secret is . . . practice. The third secret is . . . practice.”
– Swami Veda Bharati in April 2015

We invite you to share ways that current events have given you the opportunity for spiritual growth and understanding, for a greater understanding of the teachings and of yourself. Please send to ahymsin@ahymsin.org attn. AHYMSIN newsletter.“Love ceases when love exists. There shall be no more love, for another. There shall be no more love towards an alien. When I have ceased the otherness, I cannot love another. When there is no alien, there is no hate. When love is, love ceases. When love ceases, then love is. If love is between two, the ‘two’ ceases, so love ceases. God, give me that love, that by its very existence ceases and I fail to say ‘I love another’. For, I look around and I find no other. Whom shall I love? Then love becomes my own Self, filled with the Self to the brim.”
– Swami Veda Bharati in “Love in Stillness”

[This a transcript from a guided mediation and lecture given by Swami Veda Bharati at the Asilomar-Contemplative Alliance Conference in Monterey, California, USA, on October 11, 2010. The audio can be downloaded at this link: Oneness in Silence ]
…
In such silence a field of divine unity is experienced which is not a unification of many parts, but parts exist in that one infinite field. For thousands of years many traditions have taught systematic methods as to how to enter this interior of what, interior ekanta, interior silence.
In my ashram we have people who do ten days of silence, forty days of silence, ninety days of silence, but it is done methodically, and scientifically guided. In that silence, sooner or later, the true face of God becomes apparent, makes its appearance. It is not a face with features. It may be, as described by Arjuna, light of ten thousand suns shining simultaneously in the sky, in our interior sky which is more minute than the minutest atomic particle, which is more expansive than all the expansive space. All within us becomes filled with that light, with that noor, with that jyotih of which the Vedas have sung, of which the Quran has spoken, of which the Christian saints have sung hymns and psalms.
[This is an excerpt from The Art of Joyful Living by Swami Rama. Chapter “Developing Strength and Willpower.” Pages 128 – 129 in the 1989 edition.]
Even the worse experiences in the world can teach you something. Sometimes, however, even the best experiences in the world cannot teach you because you are not ready, and you have not prepared yourself. You should work with yourselves constantly, and remember that you are working with yourself.
You should develop thirty goals for thirty days, and pick one goal for each day. Practice this yourself, it is a very simple thing. For example, you may decide that today you are not going to lie. That does not mean that you will redouble your lies tomorrow, but rather, that today your whole thinking process is about this: that you are not going to lie. You never claim that you will be able to speak the total Truth, but simply decide that you are not going to consciously lie.

Dear People,
On February 27th, the last full moon of winter shines in the starry sky. Let us become silent together from 9 to 10 pm and contemplate on the miracle of women who are the hope of our world and our future.
Our Manini project in Odisha-India has survived the corona and winter season well and can finally open the gates for our long-awaited girls' boarding school. The buildings are ready for 20 girls with a future capacity of 400 girls. Excited and eager to learn, our girls are looking forward to their future life and learning in this girls' wing, which is closed for their safety.

Bhagavad Gita: Reflections from Chapter 1
Times of despair prod us into enquiry and can be our stepping stones on the path of divinity.
It was in such a state of anguish that Arjuna faced on the battleground when he turned to Lord Krishna for guidance. The first chapter of the Bhagavad Gita is titled Arjuna Vishada Yoga, the yoga of Arjuna’s despondency and sorrow. In a state of confusion and dejection, Arjuna the mightiest warrior of his times sinks into grief and depression, and casts his bow and arrow aside. Sri Krishna as his charioteer imparts the teaching of the Bhagavad Gita to bring Arjuna out of the deluded state.
The Bhagavad Gita is a condensed essence of wisdom of the Upanishads. The first chapter provides the foundation for this major text as a starting point of the enquiry of a seeker. Many readers pay less attention to the first chapter. However, it provides valuable insights into human personality. It introduces the characters, the participants in the war and their symbolic personalities that open up many psychological and philosophical lessons.
The blessing of studying Adi Guru Sri Shankaracharya’s Tattva Bodha and Sadhana Panchakam through the inspiring and generous teachings of Rabindra Sahu was a perfect way to close quite a unique year. Thank you for welcoming me in the AHYMSIN Family and for allowing me to benefit from the teachings.
Tattva Bodha reminded me of how much a renewed focus on and a further development of Uparama and Titiksha would immediately help me on my journey. I also started to reflect on the nature of my sadhana, expanding the distinction between the nature of the knowledge developed under the rule of the ego and Self-knowledge. I started wondering: what are the actual proportions of true surrender and of my want to control in my practice? What is the role of my fears and desires in my prayers, especially during these unsettling times? I realized that my sadhana had been more ego-defined than I thought, and that it was urgent to revisit it in the light of Vedanta.
Sometimes students have written to or asked Swami Veda Bharati, Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other senior teachers in our tradition questions about practice. This is one such “Question and Answer,” or Q&A.
I am stuck with my thoughts. Please help me.
Stephen Parker (Stoma) and Michael Smith have responded to this question.
We invite you to share what is happening in their centers and your experiences, insights, and questions. With such sharing, we can learn more about one another and strengthen one another in our sadhana, becoming a true “sangha”. We welcome your articles. You can write to ahymsin@ahymsin.org
