SUMMARY:An exploration into Sankhya Philosophy
DESCRIPTION:Sankhya philosophy\, founded by Rishi Kapila\, is the oldest system known in the history of Indian philosophy. Its basic principles serve as foundations for all other Indian philosophical systems in one way or another\, and therefore\, understanding of its basic principles is required to access the subtleties of all other philosophical systems\, including Yoga. \n\nThroughout his teachings\, Swami Veda Bharati emphasised that it is not possible to understand Patañjali’s Yoga Sutra unless one has a clear knowledge of the basic principles of the Sankhya Philosophy. In the philosophical traditions of India\, Sankhya and Yoga form a philosophical pair\, Sankhya being the darśana śāstra (Philosophical framework) and Yoga the prayoga śāstra (its practical application). \nThis week-long seminar with Pandit Priyadarshan (Pierre Lefebvre) will help the students to establish a good functional knowledge of the important categories and principles of classical Sankhya. The study will be focused around the original text of Sankhya philosophy\, the Tattva Samasa Sutra\, written by Rishi Kapila himself. \nWe will also explore how the application of the principles and categories of Sankhya philosophy find their way and translate in the Yoga Sutra of Patañjali\, as well as in other systems of traditional Indian knowledge.

SUMMARY:Mauni Amavasya Silence Retreats at SRSG
DESCRIPTION:Mauni Amavasya (Silence Day) is an annual observance. The observation of Silence Day is a practice that Swami Veda Bharati invited us to practice. \nIn 2024\, Mauni Amavasya is 9 February. \nThere will be 7-day silence retreats at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama\, Rishikesh\, India from 3 –  February\, 2024. Swami Ritavan Bharati and Adhikari Bhoi will be available to guide the silence participants. \n \nSwami Veda has said\, “…there is also an annual silence day in the traditions of India. It is called Mauni Amavasya. Mauni means ‘of or for silence’\, and amavasya means ‘no-moon day.’ \nIt occurs on the no-moon day of the Maagha month in the Hindu calendar when sun and moon are both supposed to enter the sign of Capricorn (makara rashi). \nIt is held in the tradition as the day when Manu\, the Archetypal Man first appeared on earth; he wedded Shata-roopa (She of a Hundred Beautiful Forms) and generated humankind.” \nAll silence retreats in the Himalayan Tradition are always guided and each participant is interviewed by a silence guide before the retreat may begin. Everyone is given a silence schedule to follow for the duration of the retreat. These schedules may vary among participants\, depending upon the prerequisites or health issues or other individual factors. You will also be given some articles and handouts to read. \nEveryone’s silence schedule will include the ashram morning and evening meditations\, morning joints and glands class and an afternoon relaxation practice session.  Schedules will also include breathing practices\, contemplative walking and japa. \nArrival and Departure Plans:\nYou are strongly advised to arrive on campus two days before your retreat begins in order to rest\, get settled\, take care of any pending business\, get needed supplies etc. This is important. Only with rested body and a relaxed mind will you be able to enter a silent state of mind from the first day. \nYou should also plan to have at least one full day at the ashram at the end of your retreat before you leave or travel anywhere.  This is to allow time for making a gentle transition from silence to everyday life. \nAt the end of your retreat you will have an opportunity to debrief with your silence guide.  The silence guide will also advise you about ways to maintain some silence in everyday life.

SUMMARY:Peace Mantras from the Vedas
DESCRIPTION:Shanti Mantras\, or the Peace Mantras\, are the mantras used as invocations at the beginning and end of the recitations of the Upanishads and other ancient Indian scriptures. These mantras are also used as special prayers for ‘peace’ during everyday pujas and rituals. Some of these mantras also are recited within the Himalayan Tradition and the Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) ashram as part of our daily morning and evening prayers. \n\nThis short weekend workshop with Pandit Priyadarshan (Pierre Lefebvre) will offer the students an introduction into this unique category of mantras found in the vast body of Vedic literature. We will learn about the importance of these mantras and their spiritual meanings.

SUMMARY:Bhagavad Gita: Karma Yoga
DESCRIPTION:Swami Rama has explained that “No one can live without performing actions. When you perform actions\, therein you reap the fruits of your actions. “As you sow\, so shall you reap.” Nobody can escape from this law. When you reap the fruits of actions\, those actions inspire you to perform more actions. Seemingly\, there is no end. This creates a sense of helplessness. You cannot live without doing your duty\, but when you do your duty\, you find yourself caught in a whirlpool. You are not happy because duty makes you a slave.” \nThe Bhagavad Gita teaches us how we should engage in actions in a manner that can facilitate our ultimate good\, while interacting in this world. We can thus learn to evaluate the effect of our actions on our life\, and assess whether they lead us towards bondage or liberation. \n \nThe human life is a beautiful and delicate combination of right knowledge and right action. It will be a blind life\, if there is only Karma and no Jnana (knowledge) to guide our actions in life. All efforts turn blind without good judgment\, and intelligence is nonproductive without sincere effort. \nWe must have buddhi (discriminative faculty) as well as karma in our life. If we were to only think deeply and not do anything\, the buddhi would be wasted. If we were to go on working and give no thought to things\, the karmas would be destroyed. Life progresses in the right direction with a combination of both karma and buddhi. \nSwami Rama has further said\, “The first thing you should learn is how to perform your actions\, yet remain unaffected. Your duty should not give you stress and strain. It should not make you a slave. \nIt is possible to live perfectly on earth if one is able to work and to love—to work for what one loves\, and to love what one is working at. \nGet up\, my friends\, arise: attain knowledge\, and dedicate your life to the service of your fellow beings.” \nDonations: Loving donations from the heart may be offered and will support the ashram during the pandemic. Kindly contact us at ahymsin@ahymsin.org for more information. \nTeacher: Rabindra Sahu \nDates: The six sessions will be organized over three weekends (Saturday and Sunday) at 6:00-7:00 IST (Indian Standard Time) from 9 – 24 October 2021. Kindly convert to your country’s time-zone accordingly. \nMedium: Online through Zoom \nLanguage: English \nRequest: Kindly join only if you are able to commit to all 6 sessions\, as the topics are progressive and systematic. \nLast Date for Registration: 8 October\, 2021 (Friday) \nFor Registrations/Enquiries/Donations: ahymsin@ahymsin.org
