The Method for Inner Study

~ Swami Rama

inner-study

Human beings are always disappointed in the external world, yet they have not turned inward to understand anything about the internal world. Those who begin to search the other dimensions of life come in contact with subtleties that are puzzling to them, and they do not know what to do next. People have been trained from childhood to observe, examine, and verify the things in the external world, but no one has taught them how to look within, how to verify within, and how to know within. The ancients contemplated on these issues for a long time, and they developed a method for studying the inner world. Just as modern scientists developed a method for analysing the nature of matter, so there is a positive and exact system that tells us how to analyse and understand inner life.

Light

~ Swami Veda Bharati

Swami Ritavan Bharati shared the below writing by Swami Veda Bharati during 2023 AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering. The theme of 2023 Sangha Gathering was “Aapo Deepo Bhava – Be a Light unto Thyself”.

Swami Ritavan read the poem at the Gathering, followed by members of the Sangha who read translations of the same in their own languages.

light

The earth is a light. The sky is a light. The beauty of your skin, the softness of your child’s cheek, the love in your eyes is a light. The light has become a leaf, a twig, a tree. Light flows as a river from a mountain of light. Whatever you do not experience is not light. All the rest is waves in a sea of light, the light that is the infinite delight, the bliss of God. The lake of Truth and mirage of falsehood is all light.

Transitioning from Ganesha Gayatri
to the essential Ganesha Mantra
AHYMSIN New Sangha Mantra Practice

~ Swami Ritavan Bharati

Swami Ritavan Bharati, Ashram Pramukha and Spiritual Guide of AHYMSIN, initiated the AHYMSIN Sangha into a new Sangha Mantra practice on the auspicious occasion of the Mahashivaratri on 18 Feb, 2023.

Ganesha-ji

This Ganesha Mantra japa will be practiced by all the members of the AHYMSIN Sangha for the duration of the next one year, until the Mahashivaratri of 2024.

The look on your faces seems to give me the impression that you are examining & questioning the fruits of your Sankalpa-vow, the one year of the many thousands upon thousands of Ganesha Gayatri that you recited in mind & heart. Question only – have I deeply felt something? Examine only – have I observed some changes in myself.

Lord Ganesha, the divine force who is the remover of obstacles in our life, in our sadhana; and provides the physical and emotional stability that we all aspire for by removing such obstacles, resistances, and conflicts enhancing our clarity and spiritual understanding lighting and enlightening our path of sadhana.

Lord Ganesha represents firm determination. Whenever our mind is resolute, it is also fearless. By letting go of fear all our obstacles are systematically overcome.

Ganesha, the lord of the ‘Adhara’, allows the Muladhara to form a stable platform, an essential foundation for your personality, thus establishing inner strength and conviction for all your choices, all your decisions, and a base of intelligence.
...

The global sangha mantra contributes to the collective intention. Last year with the Ganesha Gayatri japa and this year with the essential Ganesha mantra we are bought together into the collective mindfield of our Tradition. That collective heart of hearts in which the Gurus of our living tradition will “speak” when we choose to listen and embrace the Ganesha mantra with full faith, sincerity and humility. Let Go of expectations, fears, and anticipations, and let the Guru-Light of Love shine on your Buddhi as you become still and silent.
...

The theme of this sangha, Aapo Deepo Bhava, reminds you to recognize the journey, recognize the goal. Let your japa become your journey and your ajapa-japa become your goal. And thereby recognize that which is ever pure, ever wise, and ever free as the most natural state of your being. Through the grace of God, Guru and Self, you now recognize yourself and the true Self of your pure Being. You have nothing to “do”, nothing to achieve, other than letting go. Just “Let Go”. Swami Rama reminded us again and again, “All you need to do is let go and re-attach here. Let go of the attachments of this shore and simply reach the other shore.”
...

For your purascharana, you will complete four malas per day, four hundred recitations per day over period of this year. The mantra is shorter no doubt. So, put this japa into the routines of your daily practice and also give it some extra attention throughout your day. During times when emotional stability is needed, this divine force will help you. As you become familiar with it, the speed, the rhythm and frequency will become more subtle and within 15 minutes you can easily recite your 400 mantras. Remember to make the offering na-maha, not me and not mine. I surrender the fruits of this mantra for the Sangha members, for the sake of humanity’s suffering, for the sake of humanity seeking kindness and compassion. Resolve that through the blessings of this mantra there will be a refinement of buddhi and in your emotions that will be reflected in the transformation of my behaviours and attitudes with my family, friends and with others.

Message from Dr Mohan Swami
to Sangha 2023

~ Dr Mohan Swami

My fellow Brothers and Sisters

Swamiji conceived and later initiated AHYMSIN between 2005 to 2007, though the seeds may have been sown much earlier. It was officially registered in April 2007 at SRSG.

It was in the wee hours of the morning of Sept 1st 1990 that I was blessed immensely when I prostrated in full (ashtanga dandavat pranayam) at the feet of Gurudev in the compound of Sadhana Mandir in a cold drizzle. The blank yet euphoric and intoxicated feeling of spiritual bliss lasted for weeks till it was time for me to return to the harsh realities of the material world.

Gurudev was in Singapore the following month and I rushed to meet him there. Followed him to Indonesia and Thailand.

A week later we returned to Sadhana Mandir where he introduced me to Dr Ushaburdh Arya. The love and respect for him were instantaneous and lasts till this moment without an iota of diminution.

Messages from Shi Hong,
President, AHYMSIN

What is AHYMSIN Sangha?

Last year, we were about to make the final decision whether we weren’t going to have a Sangha gathering in 2022 February. It was a lot of pressure on us to make the decision. But at that time, the whole pandemic and travel restrictions situation were such that we were at one point considering whether we should have a virtual Sangha Gathering by zoom. I’m very happy and relieved that we didn’t take that route. Instead, we decided we want to postpone for one year in 2023 to have the physical Sangha gathering, and here we are, and I can assure you, it is so different.
...

As we all know, AHYMSIN was envisaged and founded by our beloved Swami Veda as a spiritual family. He emphasized this many times. It is a family not an institution or an organization. So, it is a spiritual family to learn, practice, and spread the teachings of the sages of the Himalayas as interpreted by Gurudeva Swami Rama. It is a lineage, a tradition as Swami Veda summed up beautifully in his guru prayer.

Lord Ganesha –
The Lord of the Ganas Within

~ Rabindra Sahu

How do we understand Lord Ganesha/Ganapati, and why is it beneficial to invoke him? Gana means “a group.” And isha means “the lord,” who is the leader of that group, that community. The name, Ganapati, means the same thing. Gana means “group,” and pati means “leader.” Whenever there is a summation, a company, a collectivity, a community, a Sangha, Lord Ganesha is the ruler. For example, Ganesha is the leader of the pancha jnanindriyas (the five organs of sense perceptions) and the pancha karmindriyas (the five organs of actions). Who rules this Sangha of Indriyas? Ganesha! When we invoke the Ganesha energy, these become purified.

For example, one of our karma-indriyas is our legs. Invocation of the Ganesha energy within us helps our legs go in the right direction in life. Likewise with our hands. Are they eager to serve? Do they help and support others? Likewise all other indriyas. Is our speech pure and positive and truthful and beneficial? Do our eyes and ears pay attention to things which are positive. If we invoke lord Ganesha, he gives them the right direction. If we invoke the energy of Lord Ganesha within us, it is more likely that our emotions will become purified and stabilized. If you are the leader of a group, such as a country, it is more likely that your country will prosper in the right direction, if you pay homage to Ganesha.

There are many stories and symbolism about Lord Ganesha. From Goddess Uma (Parvati), Ganesha is born. Uma is Shakti-svarupa – the manifestation of the essence of primordial energy. Lord Shiva is considered as Jnana-svarupa (the manifestation of the essence of knowledge). For any undertaking in our life, we need both knowledge and energy. We need jnana-shakti as well as kriya-shakti. Just having ichcha-shakti or sankalpa-shakti (resolve or determination) is not enough to carry out any undertaking without the right knowledge and the capacity and capability to do. Lord Ganesha is the son of both of these (Shiva-Shakti) energies. He rules the force of stabilization between the two and has this quality of balance, calmness and peacefulness before, during and after the completion of our work.

Ganesha is the presiding deity of Muladhara Chakra, which has four petals — manas, buddhi, ahamkara and chitta. If the four functions of the mind are unruly or go on strike, who do we talk to? The union leader – Lord Ganesha.

AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering 2023 –
A Family Celebration

~ Divya Gupta

With Guru’s Grace, we were recently blessed with the Lord Ganesha’s blessings who removed all obstacles for all our global family members to finally return home at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) for the AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering from 12-25 February 2023. This was our first biggest event at SRSG since 2016, and it was heartwarming to see everyone once again after such a long gap of many years. As many as 180 people from 22 countries joined the gathering at SRSG this year. Many members of the AHYMSIN Spiritual Committee and AHYMSIN Executive Committee, senior teachers, AHYMSIN centre leaders, and family members from all over the world came home for this joyous occasion. Some members had not been to the ashram for as many as 12 years. It was a beautiful gathering of family that is a celebration rooted in our connection with guru and each other, through our mantras, meditation and our practices.
...

Swami Ritavan gave us “Aapo Deepo Bhava: Be a Light unto Thyself” as our theme for this year’s gathering. The term originates from Buddha’s teachings. In Hindi, it is read as “Aapo Deepo Bhava”; in Pali, it would be “Appo Deepo Bhava”. It is often understood as an instruction from the Guru to the disciple to light his/her own lamp within. However, it may also be seen as a blessing from the Guru to the disciple to be/become the source of that light and thereby become an instrument to spread this light.

Aapo-Deepo-Bhava

As in our previous gatherings, all of us received a special mantra practice for the entire AHYMSIN Sangha. Just as during the last sangha gathering in 2019, Swami Ritavan wrapped us all again in his love and blessings through the Ganesha Mantra meditation shawl. We also received a Rudrakasha hand-mala and Ganga-Jala (holy water from the Ganges) from Swamiji as blessings.

Sangha-Group-Photo

We also celebrated our theme of the gathering with lighting of 5000 earthen lamps (diyas). Preparation for this special “Diwali” lamp lighting began more than a month ago, whereby all the residents and visiting sadhakas at the ashram prepared the 5000 cotton wicks by hand. All the members of the Sangha, young and old, helped prepare the 5000 diyas, by washing them with water, drying them out in air, laying them out all over the ashram campus, from the rooftops of the Main Building, Gurukulam building, and New Block buildings, to the many pathways, the main entrance, outside each of the cottages, rooms, in the garden, etc. While we had turned off all the electrical lights that night, every corner of the ashram was lit up as the entire ashram was filled with the magnificent lamps and their light. As the night progressed, these tiny diyas managed to bring silence, stillness and light within each of our hearts. We received 5000 reminders that night of the light within.
...

This magnificent event with so many participants was only made possible with the boundless love and support of all the residents, staff members, Gurukulam students, and our global family members. Everywhere one looked, one could see people spreading their inherent light through their seva, in the Dining Hall, Meditation Hall, etc.

Car Driving

~ Pt Priyadarshan (Pierre Lefebvre)

You know, I come from Canada. And where I’m from, to drive a car, you have to do a very formal course. It’s a 13-month course. It might be the same in your countries also, but it’s not the same all over the world. So you have 2 parts in your driving course. You have the theory. And you have the practice. So, where I’m from you have 5 sessions of theory for total of 10 hours, where you learn the functioning of car, where is the steering wheel, what is the gas valve, break paddle, the road signs, the rules and regulation, etiquette, etc. You know where the priority is, is not, etc. And then, you have the practice where you actually sit in the car, and practice driving.

Now, in our path, in the path of yoga, in the path of spirituality, it functions a little bit in the same way as learning to drive a car. Yoga, as a system, goes in pair with the system of philosophy that is called sāṁkhya. And don’t worry we will not go in the details sāṁkhya philosophy here. I will not bore you with that today, but they go together. Swami Veda repeated numerous times that you cannot understand the Yoga Sutras if you don’t have a firm ground in the teachings of sāṁkhya philosophy. So sāṁkhya philosophy is the philosophical framework, the theoretical system, as in the theory of driving a car. And yoga is its practical application. Same as when your theory is well understood, you then actually go in the car to practice and learn to drive. So, sāṁkhya, the theory behind the yoga system, that is the darśana śāstra, the theoretical system. And then yoga, the application, is the prayoga śāstra, the practical application of that.
