A Liberating Reality

~ Swami Rama

You are to take responsibility for your own life. This point seems especially important in America these days, where so many people are in the habit of blaming someone else for their unfortunate situations. Their parents may have abused them, neglected them, or in some way failed to appreciate or understand them. They say the result is their own unhappy marriage, difficult relationships with their children, or career failures.

Perhaps the parents were abusive, neglectful, or misunderstanding. They did their best with what they knew. Undoubtedly there is a link from one generation to another. If a parent is abusive with a child, there is an effect. However, when a child realizes the cause and effect, then it is time to begin releasing the parent from blame and responsibility. Until that happens the child cannot progress. Until then, he or she is bound to the past.

Lectures at the 2013 Sangha Gathering –
Lecture #2

~ Swami Veda Bharati

As one progresses spiritually, all the layers of one’s being are revealed. You are not just this jumble of bones wrapped up by a plastic wrap, tied up with some strings inside, nerves and pipes. That is not what you are. That is only the outermost container. And you have begun to mistake yourself to be the container instead of the spirit-content. Between the container (called the body) and you the content (the pure spirit) there are many layers. Here I go into the very ancient science of Sāṅkhya and Vaiśeṣhika. These are two of the six Vedic schools of philosophy. There are layers upon layers, whether you read the theory about them or not, whether you can list all those categories by heart or not, as you begin to move your consciousness, your awareness, your mindfulness, your realization. What does the word “realization” mean? Something becoming “real” to you! When that which was previously merely a theory, which was previously a speculation or a hypothesis, when that becomes real to you, that is realization. That realization, that is a form of revelation, revealing. That which is covered with veils is unveiled.

Annual 40-Days Spiritual Festival

~ 12 June – 21 July 2024

Each summer during the 40 days that precede Guru Purnima, sadhakas are invited to participate in the 40-Day Spiritual Festival, to expand and refine one’s sadhana. These 40 days are celebrated wherever you are.

“We are all here for a purpose; it is an on-going spiritual process. We are all here for spiritual liberation and serving that mission. For that purpose we are purifying ourselves of our pride and ego. For these reasons we train ourselves in constant self-observation: to see oneself, to hear oneself to develop this internal dialogue. I have used one criterion for all my thoughts, my words, and my actions: ‘Is this conducive to spiritual liberation.’” – Swami Veda Bharati

40-days

It is a time to contemplate (and talk with others about) the many ways you can participate.

In reviewing the guidelines and making your own commitments, please keep in mind your own capacity. Success with a series of smaller goals will lead to greater purification and capacity for next year. Assess your own capacity and do not try to push to complete “on time.” Accommodate for your family responsibilities.

Growing Together in Harmony and Inclusion:
Seeds of Yoga at School

~ Ilaria Sarri

When I stop and think about the reason I started to share the practice of yoga with children and adolescents, I feel Swami Rama’s words resonate within me and it comes to my mind the light in Swami Veda’s eyes when, in La Verna in June 2012, he announced the Children Retreat, at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) Ashram, inviting the entire Ahymsin family to participate.

In the same way, it arises spontaneously the memory of the experience I made in 2014 during the Children Retreat at the Ashram, again at the presence of our beloved Swami Veda. The image of Swami Veda with children is like a lighthouse that illuminates and guides the path: we don’t teach what we know, but we share what we are.

Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati have always encouraged children and adolescents to approach yoga from an early age, future generations in which it is essential to focus, “planting” in them some small seeds that may, with time and care, grow and blossom.

Sharing these teachings, the Himalayan Yoga Institute of Florence has been participating for many years in yoga projects in primary and secondary schools, in collaboration with the Municipality of Florence and the municipalities of other cities.
