Our Tradition

~ Swami Rama

Our tradition has the following orientation:

1. One absolute without a second is our philosophy.

2. Serving humanity through selflessness is an expression of love, which one should follow through mind, action and speech.

3. The Yoga System of Patañjali is a preliminary step accepted by us for the higher practices in our tradition, but philosophically we follow the Advaita system of one absolute without a second.

4. Meditation is systematized by stilling the body, having serene breath, and controlling the mind. Breath awareness, control of the autonomic system, and learning to discipline primitive urges are practiced.

5. We teach the middle path to students in general, and those who are prepared for higher steps of learning have the opportunity to learn advanced practices. This helps people in general in their daily lives to live in the world and yet remain above. Our method, for the convenience of Western students, is called Superconscious Meditation. I am only a messenger delivery the wisdom of the Himalayan sages of this tradition, and whatever spontaneously comes from the centre of intuition, that I teach. I never prepare my lectures or speeches, for I was told by my master not to do so.

6. We do not believe in conversion, changing cultural habits or introducing any God in particular. We respect all religions equally, loving all and excluding none. Neither do we oppose any temple, mosque, or church, nor do we believe in building homes for God while ignoring human being. Our firm belief is that every human being is a living institution or a temple.

Message for International Yoga Day,
21 June 2015

~ Swami Veda Bharati

This is to the beloved manifestations of Divine Atman in Yoga,

My dear self,

I pay homage to the founders, the sages, the rishis of the Guru lineage by whose compassion, intuition and insight this eternal knowledge has come to bless and grant us beneficences at this time of our ongoing history of spiritual development in humanity.

On such a day, all those who follow the inner spiritual core of yoga in their quest, in whichever branch of spiritual yoga, they need to get together to share their inner experiences, contemplate on their advancement in the quest, and be in a mode of deep inner silence.

On this day, let all those who adhere to the ancient systems of yoga as taught by the rishis gather and meditate together. Meditate with body, mind and spirit.

Yoga is Samadhi

~ Swami Ritavan Bharati

Yoga Year 2024-25

Yoga Meditation is the song of your soul, the sweetness of being. The music of your mind is the melody of feelings, and the music of your heart is the rhythm of emotions. The music of your soul is bhava and the subtlest is mantra. When your thoughts settle, when your emotions calm, when the entire mind is pure, the soul sings in the most inaudible, pleasant, and loving manner. A quietness that is so sweet, a savoring that attracts your attention within to experience your essence. This unified experience of aliveness-of being - this bhava is your most natural state, your mind in samadhi.

yoga-is-samadhi

In each meditation, let the current of that mind-energy, that light and vibration arise from that willful source.
Let it move the prana, thereby moving the air that becomes your breath.
Go back to that connection, start your entrance right where you have emerged from it into the world of forms, and trace it back by the same pathway.
Trace it back, now, at this moment.
Just feel the flow and the touch of your breath in your nostrils.
Let it become an awareness of that oceanic current that in this form, is sending forth its rhythm through your embodied form.
Let the Mantreshvaras, Lords of the Mantras, send forth a stream of consciousness, mantra stream, breath stream, and awareness stream flowing as one stream, the flow as a single unconditioned, formless, effortless stream of consciousness.
In this most natural state of mind, you will understand Yoga is Samadhi.

Swami Veda Bharati’s
9th Mahasamadhi Day

~ 14 July 2024

Swami-Veda-Bharatis-Mahasamadhi

अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम्।
तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥
akhaṇḍa-maṇḍalākāraṁ vyāptaṁ yena carācaram,
tat-padaṁ darśitaṁ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ.

(Which) pervades the entire unbroken form of the circle (of creation), moving and unmoving. To that beautiful and benevolent Guru through whom that state was revealed (to me), salutations.

On the sacred day of 14 July 2015, our beloved Swami Veda Bharati left his physical body and entered Mahasamadhi.

We gather as a celebration on the anniversary of our beloved Swami Veda’s samadhi. Here, we are not adoring the physical body which was placed in this space a few years ago; we are present to embrace the subtlety of his example, the beauty of his teaching, and faith in his mandate – ‘share with the world the pure form of meditation and only initiate into the same.’” – Swami Ritavan Bharati

Every year, we celebrate our dear Swamiji’s Mahasamadhi Anniversary by gathering together at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) Ashram in Rishikesh, India.

Special Event: Mantra and Purashcharana

~ with Swami Ritavan Bharati, Raghavendra Adiga, and Rabindra Sahu

Mantra-and-Purashcharana

Those who have been graced with an initiation into a personal guru mantra within the Himalayan Tradition are connected to the Guru Lineage through their personal mantra. When an intensive practice of japa (mantra remembrance) of one’s own personal mantra is undertaken, this connection with the Guru Lineage is strengthened within.

Under the guidance of Swami Ritavan Bharati, the participants will undertake a sankalpa (resolve) to begin the practice of purashcharana of one’s own personal mantra. A purashcharana is the practice of repeating a mantra 125,000 times plus 10 per cent with fire offerings (or 20 per cent without fire offerings), sometimes in a certain period of time. One makes a resolution and then japa is done faithfully every day until the 125,000 is completed. The practice may be undertaken along with personal silence. Each participant will receive personal guidance from Swami Ritavan Bharati or one of the available mantra initiators.

Everyday during the 21-days retreat from 9 Feb – 1 Mar, there will be dedicated times for personal fire offerings, silent japa, one-on-one guidance from Swami Ritavan Bharati and Raghavendra Adiga about one’s personal practices, and theory classes on ‘Mantra and Purashcharana’ with Raghavendra Adiga and Rabindra Sahu.

In 2025, Mahashivaratri will be on 26 February and there will be special activities and pujas around the sacred occasion. There will be a yajna (fire offerings) with the current AHYMSIN Sangha Mantra (ॐ गं गणपतये नमः । Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ ।). Special announcements regarding AHYMSIN Sangha Mantra will also be made at the same time.

Applications for participation are invited from those family members who have received Mantra Initiation within the Himalayan Tradition. When applying, the participants are requested to share about the following –

1. Date and place of your mantra initiation, and the name of the initiator.
2. Practiced a purashcharana before? If yes, please share details.
3. Practiced silence before? If yes, please share details.
4. Anything else you would like to share with Swami Ritavan about your personal practice.

Annual 40-Days Spiritual Festival

~ 12 June – 21 July 2024

Each summer during the 40 days that precede Guru Purnima, sadhakas are invited to participate in the 40-Day Spiritual Festival, to expand and refine one’s sadhana. These 40 days are celebrated wherever you are.

“We are all here for a purpose; it is an on-going spiritual process. We are all here for spiritual liberation and serving that mission. For that purpose we are purifying ourselves of our pride and ego. For these reasons we train ourselves in constant self-observation: to see oneself, to hear oneself to develop this internal dialogue. I have used one criterion for all my thoughts, my words, and my actions: ‘Is this conducive to spiritual liberation.’” – Swami Veda Bharati

40-days

It is a time to contemplate (and talk with others about) the many ways you can participate.

In reviewing the guidelines and making your own commitments, please keep in mind your own capacity. Success with a series of smaller goals will lead to greater purification and capacity for next year. Assess your own capacity and do not try to push to complete “on time.” Accommodate for your family responsibilities.

JOIN US FOR A DEEP DIVE INTO CONSCIOUSNESS

May our minds be filled with beautiful and benevolent thoughts. May those thoughts benefit our world.

This summer, join us for a deep dive into consciousness. We will embark on this journey during the upcoming Spiritual Festival, which begins on June 12 and concludes with Guru Purnima on July 21st. Over these forty days, no matter where we are located, we can explore ways to enhance our spiritual paths and allow the festival’s energy to guide us as we embrace our personal practice goals, growth, and self-transformation under the blessings of the guru parampara.

Immediately following, from July 25 to August 3, we have a profound opportunity to incorporate our spiritual goals into our lives. Join us in like-minded community at the Sangha of the Americas, held at the beautiful St. Olaf College campus in Northfield, Minnesota. Here we will immerse ourselves in an inspiring 10-day retreat that includes speakers and presentations from the Himalayan tradition as well as five days of silence led by our experienced meditation guide from The Meditation Center in Minneapolis, Swami Radha Bharati. The theme of this year’s sangha is “Illuminating Joyful Living.”

At Sangha of the Americas, we will experience the physical presence and guidance of swamis of the tradition, including Swami Ritavan Bharati. With the firm foundation of sangha supporting us, retreat participants will get the profound opportunity for personal interaction with many Himalayan leaders and teachers, giving us space to ask personal questions and truly incorporate new insights into our spiritual practices.

Join us and let the immersion of your own personal 40-day practice, followed by attendance at Sangha of the Americas, serve as a cornerstone for the rest of your year. The peace and harmony gained from aligning our minds with joyful living will not only enrich our personal journeys but also contribute positively to our world.

We look forward to seeing you there.
