Guru

~ Swami Rama

The word guru is a compound of two words, gu and ru. Gu means darkness and ru means light. That which dispels the darkness of ignorance is called guru. The energy and action of removing darkness are guru. Guru is not a person, it is a force driven by grace.

To put this another way, there is an intelligent momentum that pervades the universe that is moving all human beings toward the perfection we call God. Guru is that intelligence. Everyone’s receptivity to that intelligence varies. It depends on preparation, which includes the development of vairagya or non attachment, and abhyasa or practice. In other words, guru is always there, but the student may not be ready to receive what the guru has to offer. When the student is prepared, the guru always arrives to help the student do what is necessary to progress in removing the veil of ignorance. It is said that when the wick and oil are properly prepared, the master lights the lamp.

Guru is not a person, but guru can be represented in a person. One who has developed his or her own spiritual awareness to a very high level can guide others, and is considered to be guru. Only one who is finely attuned to the inner guide can inspire the awakening of the inner guide in another. Guru is not a physical being. If a guru begins thinking this power is her or his own, then they are no longer a guide. The guru is a tradition, a stream of knowledge.

In India guru is a sacred word that is used with reverence and is always associated with the highest wisdom. The guru is unique in a person’s life. The relationship between disciple and guru is like no other relationship. It is said that guru is not mother, father, son, or daughter. The guru is not a friend in any conventional sense. It also is sometimes said that the guru is father, mother, son, daughter, and friend all in one; the guru is sun and moon, sky and earth to the disciple.

What Is a Guru

~ Swami Veda Bharati

The word, Guru, is used in many different contexts in India. The Yoga-sutras of Patanjali, the most important text of yoga philosophy and a bible of the yogis says that God is the Guru of even the most ancient ones of the earliest one. Nowadays anybody who teaches you anything is a Guruji. You hear about all kinds of gurus nowadays. Anybody who can touch his nose to his toes advertises himself as a great Guru, great teacher. Is there some kind of a certification to make you a Guru? Maybe you can have a university degree, or some kind of test or become a paying member of the Guru association! What is all this Guru business anyway? What makes you a Guru? When the Beatles became disappointed with Maharshi Mahesh Yogi they said that in India a person becomes a Guru by the same process by which you become a popular rock band in the West. You develop a following.

So, what is a Guru and what is the test of being a Guru? It’s very difficult to start the discussion on this subject. The word is used in so many different contexts. Sometimes it’s just an expression of respect. We are told in the tradition, in the culture in which I was born that your mother is the first Guru. Your father is the second Guru. Your teacher is the third Guru, and your spiritual Master is the fourth Guru. Then there is a book called The Laws of Manu. The major ancient book of laws for the Indians, for India, which says that one Guru equals ten paid teachers. A hundred gurus equal one father, and hundred fathers equal one mother. So anywhere that you derive wisdom from is Guru. There are also great women figures, great women Masters and sages in the history of India.

Now you can view the Guru on two different levels. One is again giving information. We are not talking about study of economics or study of physics, although the same people in ancient India, the very same people who developed yoga science, also developed all other sciences. The texts they wrote on political science also started with the discussion of metaphysics. Why should the society have political stability? Why should people have economic security? Why should you run a country? Why should you run a government? And the answer given in this tradition is so that they have the facility to meditate, so that they can go towards self-realization, so that one person does not go out of his way to interfere with somebody else’s karma. A trader, a businessman should earn so that he supports the student, so that he supports the seeker, so that he gives to the ashram, so that he builds a well in the village. He who earns only for himself earns only sin. It’s a question of the whole value of the society.

Rekindling the Light Within:
A Tribute to Gurudeva Swami Rama

~ Rabindra Sahu

It is always an honour and delight for the disciples and seekers on the path of Truth to celebrate the birth centenary of luminous beings whose lives and teachings have touched and transformed countless souls—leading them from the darkness of ignorance to the light of Truth.

As we celebrate and commemorate the centenary of our Gurudeva HH Swami Rama’s earthly presence, we bow in loving reverence. Gurudeva reminded us that life is both fleeting and precious—and that we must not waste time. He showed us the way to translate all desires of life into a singular desire: to seek the Atman, the one eternal witness, and to discover the mystery of this life.

In this Centennial Year, our current spiritual guide and Ashram Pramukha, Swami Ritavan Bharati, lovingly called upon all initiates of the Himalayan Tradition and all disciples of the Lineage to renew their sankalpa—to live in the world yet remain above it, to live skilfully and selflessly, while holding dear the teachings of Gurudeva.

The Birth Centenary Celebration is not merely a moment of remembrance of Gurudeva Swami Rama. It is a loving reminder for reconnection and rededication towards the teachings of the Himalayan Tradition in order to transform our lives. As we know, the mission of the Himalayan Tradition, as carried forward by Swami Rama, is to awaken the divine flame within every human being, enabling each one of us to realize our true Self.

Within my limited understanding, Swami Rama is that living flame of pure consciousness. He has written:

“The word guru is a compound of two words, gu and ru. Gu means darkness and ru means light. That which dispels the darkness of ignorance is called guru. The energy and action of removing darkness are guru. Guru is not a person; it is a force driven by grace.” (Sacred Journey, p. 82)

To me, Gurudeva Swami Rama is that being of light, a living flame. When we celebrate his birth centenary, we are really celebrating that living flame and dedicating our lives to rekindle the light of the sacred teachings within ourselves. The Guru represents the highest wisdom, the truth, the light, and the love. We must allow that divine flame to ignite within us. The light is always there. The question is—am I willing to receive? Am I willing to be transformed?

gurur brahmā gurur viṣṇur gurur devo maheśvaraḥ,
guruḥ sākṣāt paraṁ brahma tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ

In our prayer and worship to the Guru, we say: Guru Brahma—the Guru is the Creator; Guru Vishnu—the Guru is the Sustainer; Guru Maheshvara—the Guru is the Destroyer. So, when we surrender ourselves at the feet of the Master—to be recreated, to sustain what has been created, and to allow complete destruction of my ego. Are we ready? Do we truly want this?

Only worshipping the Guru is not enough. If I am thirsty and hold a cup of water, yet I continue to only worship the water without drinking it, my thirst will remain unquenched. The water has the potential to quench my thirst, but unless I drink it, nothing changes. In the same way, we can go on worshipping the Guru outwardly, but unless we allow the Guru to enter our hearts, transformation will not occur.

Through mantra initiation, one drop of the Guru’s mind-field is implanted into our own. The Guru has planted one drop of nectar, one drop of that light of love within us.

On Gurudeva Swami Rama’s birth centenary, the greatest tribute we can offer him is to recommit to our sadhana—to approach the path with the same sincerity, courage, and dedication that he exemplified as both a disciple and a Guru (even though he never claimed to be one).

Now is the time for us to go forth and ignite the flame of light and love in ourselves and others.

May our lives become the living echo of Gurudeva’s words—LOVE, SERVE, REMEMBER.

The Three Pillars of the
Guru-Disciple Relationship

~ Rabindra Sahu

Swami Rama has said, “The relationship between the Guru and disciple is the purest, with unconditional love. There is absolute selflessness. The Guru wants nothing from the disciple. The Guru’s only wish is that we become a little more regular in our practice and he waits for the disciple endlessly, incarnations after incarnations after incarnations. The Guru never leaves the disciple. Everything in life leaves us at some time or other. Nothing will stay with us forever. All our wealth, all the name and fame, good health, beauty, parents, spouse, children, etc., nobody stays with us, even in one lifetime, forever all the time. The relationship with the Guru extends beyond lifetimes, provided we are a worthy disciple.” (Sacred Journey, p. 84)

In my limited understanding, there are three most important pillars in the Guru disciple relationship.

1. First S – Shraddha is absolute faith and belief with sincerity and receptivity.

The Bhagavad-gita (Ch. 4, v. 39) says, śhraddhāvānllabhate jñānaṁ. Śhraddhāvān—somebody who's endowed with Shraddha. Labhate—gets or is benefited with. Jñānam—wisdom.

The disciple must possess the first essential quality shraddha—faith and receptivity—to be able to benefit from the Guru’s guidance. The disciple must trust that whatever the master does is for their ultimate good.

If I am truly a disciple, I don't decide. If I am sick, I don't decide the medicine. I go to the doctor, whatever the doctor prescribes, that's what I do. If I say, ‘doctor, I don't believe you, I doubt you’, then I should go to somebody else. I cannot take a medicine without trust. I have to trust. That's the first step—shraddha. If there is no trust, no progress can happen. The Guru is the one who personally guides us on the spiritual path. The Guru knows all the pitfalls that may come up on this path and knows our mind, our samskaras, tendencies, vasanas, and even our past lives. So, the Guru knows what kind of practice would be suitable for each of us. The disciple thinks, ‘I may not fully understand why the Guru is giving this specific instruction (a particular mantra, a seemingly mundane task), but I trust his wisdom and the map of the Tradition enough to practice it sincerely.’

So the Guru-disciple relationship is based upon the foundation of shraddha, that is the first pillar.

2. Second S – Sadhana

Sadhana is disciplined, daily effort, practice, and commitment. Continued commitment towards our ultimate goal. Sincere commitment is called sadhana. We may fail a thousand times, but we must remain committed towards our practice. Which practice? The practice given by the Master.

In the Guru-disciple relationship, practice is non-negotiable. We must practice the guidance we receive. Sometimes a kick, sometimes a blow, sometimes a hug where we feel that there is heaven in that hug, sometimes a slap where you feel that there is destruction of ego, as if we are being destroyed.

Once we go to the doctor, we sincerely, diligently follow the doctor’s prescription and advice. We need to practice diligence and sincerity in following the prescription that has been given to me by my master, no matter how many times we fail. If I do not live the teachings that have been given to me by my Guru, nothing else would count and I would not progress far. The best that a disciple can offer to the Guru Force is by living the teachings of the Masters.

There are two wings of sadhana: abhyasa, diligence in our practice, and vairagya, dispassion, detachment.

Sadhana is challenged by laziness and procrastination where our lower mind always find excuses. There could be periods where our practice feels mechanical, empty, and devoid of progress, as if we are stuck. The ultimate test of Sadhana is not how calm we are in meditation, but how we respond to a traffic jam, a criticism, or a personal loss. This is the phase where our faith and discipline is challenged. Leading to the importance of the third pillar of Samarpana.

3. Third S – Samarpana is self-surrender.

Samarpana is not slavery. We can think of it as progressive surrendering of my lower mind onto the higher self. Samarpana is a conscious choice to merge my individual will with the Divine Will. This allows the disciples to receive the Guru’s grace.

A disciple must learn to surrender the need to control and see/realize that our mind is limited and very often misguided by the preconceived ideas, past samskaras, conditionings etc.

It is not that we are new to the concept of surrendering. Sometimes when we listen to this word surrender, we get frightened.

When we go to a barber, we have surrendered ourselves to the barber. We trust that the barber will only cut my hair, and not my neck or ear. When we board a flight, we surrender ourselves to the pilot.

Absolute surrender is a big thing. It is about surrendering everything that is “Me” and “Mine”. It will come eventually but we can practice progressive surrender. Let me surrender one aspect of my life to my Master, whatever it could be. Let me surrender a particular thought, let me surrender an emotion to my Master, let me surrender the attachment to wealth, whichever it is, in our own ways—let us spend time to contemplate what we are ready to leave. Every time we choose to purify and overcome one of the many weaknesses—it could be a jealousy, or a fear, or anger/resentment—and offer that struggle at the feet of the Master, that is a small yet powerful act of surrender. Samarpana to the Guru therefore is never an act of suppression, it is an act of expansion.

When we start our journey/relationship upon the foundation of a little shraddha, it leads us to begin our sadhana. Regularity in sadhana provides us with direct experience which then deepens our shraddha in the Guru and as our sadhana deepens we inherently feel the burden or our own ego that needs to be surrendered making us more willing to practice samarpana and eventually the samarpana removes the final block of our Ego making our sadhana fruitful and shraddha more profound.

These three qualities [shraddha, sadhana, samarpana] are the most essential between the Guru and the disciple.

Gurudeva Swami Rama’s entire life was an example of these pillars. His unwavering shraddha in his Master allowed him to endure unimaginable sadhana which led to the ultimate samarpana.

Himalayan Yoga Tradition –
Teacher Training Program -
A Time of Renewal and Continuity

~ AHYMSIN Office

When Gurudeva Swami Rama started traveling Westward on instructions from his Master to share the teachings of the Himalayan Tradition of Yoga Meditation worldwide, by the early 1970s, he also started training his initiates as teachers and guides within this living tradition of the Himalayan Sages to carry forward his Master’s wish.

Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati then offered a systematic path of learning yoga meditation within the Himalayan Tradition to dedicated initiates, so one day they can carry forward the teachings themselves. The purpose of such teacher trainings was and has always been to prepare yoga meditation teachers as such that they are not merely instructors of the techniques of hatha yoga, but that they become instruments of these timeless teachings.

What is the teacher's purpose by the standard of these great Himalayan masters? As Swami Veda Bharati has said,

“So please understand what the goal, aim and purpose of yoga is. Please understand what your role as a teacher is. It is only and none other but leading suffering humanity to spiritual enlightenment.”

The teacher is not merely one who has knowledge of various postures or breathing techniques; a teacher becomes a loving presence in the students’ life. In today’s world of political, economic, environmental, and psychological upheavals, we all yearn for something that is grounding, nurturing, and nourishing to our hearts and minds. The teacher's role, therefore, is to be that force that nurtures and facilitates inner peace and joy.

For several decades now, the Himalayan Yoga Tradition – Teacher Training Program has served sincere aspirants worldwide in their quest of seeking authentic knowledge of yoga meditation. Over the years, the program has trained and inspired hundreds of teachers across the world to share the wisdom of the Himalayan Tradition.

In Swami Veda’s own words “This program has been designed to pass on the essential principles and practices of the Tradition, which fosters personal development on all levels. For the aspiring as well as the experienced teacher, the program presents all aspects of yoga/meditation in a spiritually inspiring context...

Our practical, experiential approach to teacher training encourages students to incorporate these skills into their daily lives.”

As we all know, this year has been very significant for our global family, marked by two sacred events:
1. Birth Centenary of Gurudeva Swami Rama, whose life was and continues to be an inspiration for all of us.
2. 10th Mahasamadhi of our beloved Swami Veda Bharati, whose love and gentle guidance continues to flow and guide us each day.

As these sacred events unfold, we are delighted to share that the teacher training program is entering a new phase of renewal. At the heart of this new beginning is Swami Veda’s long-cherished vision. Swami Ritavan Bharati, AHYMSIN’s Spiritual Guide and Ashram Pramukha, has shared that it was Swami Veda’s wish to offer this program from Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama Ashram in Rishikesh, as the global headquarters of AHYMSIN and the spiritual home of the global sangha. And we are very happy that during Swami Veda’s 10th Mahasamadhi year, that vision has been actualised.

Announcing this joyful news to the global sangha during Swami Rama’s Birth Centenary Celebrations on 25 October 2025, Swami Ritavan said,

How are the teachings of the tradition carried on? Very early Swami Rama set up a theme in our teachings. He said, you teach. Meaning, we couldn't just sit and enjoy doing our asana and our pranayama or meditation. He said, now, how do you teach those joints and glands to the elderly, to the children in their schools, to those that are in the throngs of addiction? How do you help them come out to form new habit patterns? How do you go into the prisons to which he sent me to one and I was petrified, “what to do in such a place.” You just sit down and allow the grace to flow.

The teaching as taught by Gurudeva Swami Rama and Swami Veda has been carrying on for 55 years. We are starting another era of the teacher training program here at our ashram starting in April 2026. It will be a month-long intensive residency that will be full days of all aspects of training yoga teachers. Not so much for the purpose of that they will do research, not for the purpose that they will go out and teach the philosophy, but that they will practice, and they will teach from their experience of practicing.”

As Swami Veda said,
“If you have come to learn from the tradition of Swami Rama and all the sages of the past going back to Patañjali and you have learned something from these great teachers who have been serving you day and night, then you will go back and you will not teach yoga at the level of a certificate. You will not teach yoga on the strength of a certificate. You will teach yoga on the strength of your spiritual personality. Your magnetism that comes from meditation. The meditative magnetism is far stronger than any other type of magnetism. It is because of that that you are drawn to this ashram. It is the specialty of this ashram, that magical meditational magnetism.”

We will share more details about the new program soon with the global family.

With humility and dedication, we move forward in the light of the Masters who continue to inspire and bless our path.

In loving service of the Sages of the Himalayas,

Reverberations of Mantra and Grace:
The Guru–Disciple Relationship Retreat

~ Dr Divya Gupta

With a heart so full of love, head bowed down in surrender, and hands folded in humility and devotion, we began celebration of Gurudeva HH Swami Rama's Birth Centenary day on 25 October 2025 with the Guru-Disciple Relationship Retreat from 19-25 October 2205.

As we prepared the ashram, and more importantly, ourselves to commemorate the centenary of Gurudeva’s physical presence, we received guidance and inspiration from Swami Ritavan Bharati, Swami Tat Sat Bharati, Wong Yoong Khiang, and Rabindra Sahu. They all shared teachings on the theme of our week—how to deepen our relationship with the Guru Force and how to become worthy of being a disciple.

In homage to Gurudeva, we organised a 7-day yajna (fire offerings) with the akhanda-mandalakaram mantra from 19-25 October 2025. In preparation for this once in 100 years celebration, the entire ashram was decorated with flowers and holy leaves of the Ashoka and Mango trees. Each cottage door was decorated with a traditional flowers and leaves ‘bandhanwar’ or ‘toran’ lovingly handmade by our visiting sadhakas.

Swami-Rama-Birth-Centenary Swami-Rama-Birth-Centenary Swami-Rama-Birth-Centenary Swami-Rama-Birth-Centenary Swami-Rama-Birth-Centenary Swami-Rama-Birth-Centenary

Nine priests organised daily pujas and led the yajna everyday for several hours. And the ashram reverberated with the chants of the akhanda-mandalakaram mantra and other Vedic mantras throughout the week. With each repetition of the mantra, we were reminded of the Guru's Grace to be allowed to be a tiny part of this ancient, unbroken Tradition and to receive the timeless teachings of the Himalayan Masters. The ashram was filled with the fragrant scent of the yajna, as a beautiful reminder of the Path of Fire and Light, so lovingly shown by our Gurudeva.

The yajna concluded with the Purnahuti on 25 October, on Swami Rama’s 100th birthday and was attended by more than 450 devotees including many global family members who journeyed far, and several followers from Rishikesh, whose lives were touched by the light of Swami Rama. Many global family members from all over the world connected with us during the events via Facebook live to pay their obeisances to our dearest Gurudeva.

On 25th October, we began a 28-hour akhanda japa (non-stop remembrance) of the akhanda-mandalakaram mantra at 4 am in the Initiation Room. The japa continued throughout the day and night, until 8 am on 26th October. For those 28 hours, Swami Veda’s Initiation Room became a sacred sanctuary where everyone sat in stillness and silence turning their gaze inward on a shared inner pilgrimage. It was a beautiful experience to see people sitting with utter devotion through the brightness of the day and deep silence of the night, all engaged in remembrance of Swami Rama through their japa.

We initially took a silent sankalpa to offer 100 hours of japa in remembrance of Gurudeva Swami Rama. With heartfelt devotion and dedication of all initiates, both ashramites and visiting sadhakas, we were very happy to have collectively completed over 120 hours of japa.

With every single offering into the sacred yajna fire and through our japa, we prayed at the lotus feet of Gurudeva so we may be purified and may become worthy of following the path that he illuminated for us.

In the year 2033, we will be celebrating Gurudeva Swami Rama's 108th birthday and our beloved Swami Veda Bharati's 100th birthday with a grand event, and the preparations have already begun. :)

100 Years of Swami Rama –
2025 SRSG Activities at a Glance

~ Dr Divya Gupta

Gurudeva Swami Rama's Birth Centenary year was dedicated to the Guru-force by way of facilitating, organising and conducting various special retreats at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama Ashram and worldwide. Each member of our global spiritual family took part in these events planned throughout this year where we shared our stories, learnings, experiences and most importantly how our lives have been transformed through the teachings of the Himalayan Tradition.

Mantra and Purashcharana Retreat: 9 Feb - 1 Mar, 2025

Mantra-and-Purashcharana

In commemoration of the centennial of Gurudeva Swami Rama’s birth, a Mantra and Purashcharana Retreat convened over 60 initiates from 13 nations for 21 days. During the retreat, a purashcharana of 125,000 guru mantras was offered by each initiate individually, dedicated in the spirit of Guru prityartham—for the pleasure of the Guru.

Throughout the retreat, initiates received personal guidance from Swami Ritavan Bharati, Raghavendra Adiga ji, Yoong ji, and Rabindra ji to deepen their understanding of their mantra practice.

Culminating this immense offering of millions of mantras from all the devoted hearts, we felt immersed in love and gratitude for the Guru Lineage and offered flowers at the altar in the Swami Rama Hall, remembering the truth that the Guru is the boat that carries us across the ocean of creation.

AHYMSIN New Sangha Mantra Practice for the year 2025-26 -
Akhanda-mandalakaram Mantra

Akhanda-Mandalakaram-Mantra

Swami Ritavan Bharati, AHYMSIN’s Spiritual Guide, invited all initiates and students of the Himalayan Tradition to include the akhanda-mandalakaram mantra into their practices, in loving remembrance and homage to our dear Gurudeva Swami Rama. In his New Year letter to the AHYMSIN Sangha, Swami Ritavan announced that we will celebrate 2025 as the Centennial Year of our beloved Gurudeva, H.H. Swami Rama of the Himalayas.

अखण्ड-मण्डलाकारम् व्याप्तम् येन चराचरम्।
तत्पदम् दर्शितम् येन तस्मै श्री गुरवे नमः॥

akhaṇḍa-maṇḍalākāram vyāptam yena carācaram
tat padam darśitam yena, tasmai śrī gurave namah

I pay obeisances to Sri Guru, who revealed to me That state, which pervades the entire unbroken circle (of creation), both moving and unmoving.

As a heartfelt tribute to our Gurudeva on His 100th Birth Anniversary, sangha members were lovingly invited to recite the akhanda-mandalakaram mantra silently in their hearts as a prayer or, if possible, offer one or more malas of the mantra. This practice was in addition to each initiate's ongoing japa and meditation practices with their personal initiation mantra.

As a united Sangha, all initiates and students of the Himalayan Tradition collectively engaged in the practice of the akhanda-mandalakaram mantra for the whole year, leading up to the AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering in March 2026.

25-Days Immersion into the Shri Lalita Sahasranaam:
13 Mar- 6 Apr, 2025

25-days-immersion-into-the-shri-lalita-sahasranaam

The Himalayan Tradition of Yoga Meditation is the tradition of the Divine Feminine. At our Maa Tara Temple, we chant the thousand names of the Divine Mother, Shri Lalitha Sahasranaam every day. During special events such as the Navaratri (nine days and nights dedicated to the Mother Divine), we chant the Shri Lalitha Sahasranaam non-stop for 24 hours throughout the 9 days.

The holy anushthan (undertaking) of 25-day immersion into the sacred Shri Lalitha Sahasranaam, the thousand names of the Divine Mother was an excuse, more than an opportunity, to further strengthen our relationship with the Mother. For 25 days, we gathered at the yajnashala, our hearts overflowing with devotion, to offer havana (fire offerings) with the sacred 1000 names of Maa Lalita everyday. The ashram was then resonating with divine vibrations, each 'Svaha' an offering of our love, a blossoming of our hearts at the Mother's feet.

The retreat commenced on the auspicious occasion of Holika Dahan, a festival that celebrates the triumph of purity over darkness, a radiant celebration of positivity, renewal and joy. As is the tradition in the ashram, the retreat began with prayers and pujas of Maa Tara, Lord Sadhakeshwara, and the Guru lineage, seeking their grace as we set forth on this sacred inward journey dedicated at the feet of Gurudeva Swami Rama in honour of his birth centenary.

The mornings and evenings sessions were dedicated to exploring the profound meanings of each of Maa Lalitha's names, guided by the insightful teachings of Rabindra Sahu. He lovingly unveiled the depths of each of the 1000 names, unveiling the Mother’s roopa and swaroopa (her appearance, her vision, her nature), allowing us to ‘feel’ her presence in every facet of our existence.

We felt as if we were in the womb of Divine Mother, embraced by her love, finding refuge in her sacred names, warmed by the sanctified yajna fire. Each name, a radiant reminder of her brilliance, beauty, and light. As the retreat concluded, a serene stillness enveloped us, and we prayed to merge in her divine glory.

84- Days Intensive Sadhana Retreat within the Himalayan Tradition:
10 Jul – 1 Oct, 2025

84-Days-Intensive-Sadhana-Retreat

With heartfelt and eternal gratitude towards Gurudeva Swami Rama for having shown us the path of the Himalayan Masters, on the most blessed occasion of His birth centennial celebration, this year a special 3-month program was offered at the ashram for the first time—84-day Intensive Sadhana Retreat, guided by Rabindra Sahu. The program commenced on the auspicious day of the Guru Purnima on 10th July 2025. What more auspicious day could there be to begin such a journey than on Guru Purnima itself.

We received 13 dedicated participants from all age groups, from many religions, from eight different countries, including Australia, Ecuador, Hungary, India, Italy, Norway, UK, and USA. There were beginners and long-term initiates in this group. While coming from such diverse life experiences, they all had one thing common—an intense longing for self-purification and self-transformation.

This retreat was a heartfelt offering, a small effort to honour the timeless teachings of the Himalayan Tradition and to share these sacred teachings with all who seek them.

Throughout their lives, Gurudeva Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati both worked to serve those in need and alleviate their suffering. Following their footsteps, we continue our charitable efforts towards the larger benefit of humanity and in line with our mission. In 2025, we had several projects, including Sadhu Seva in Gangotri, sending disaster relief assistance during the Uttarkashi floods, offering yoga classes in schools for underprivileged children, supporting educational efforts in underfunded rural schools, supporting Sanskrit education, distributing yoga meditation books by Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati in yoga universities, offering social and medical welfare for the most vulnerable and with extraordinary circumstances, providing support to gaushalas that work towards caring for rescued cattle, organising blood donation camp, etc.

Dr Swati Saharan, Operations Manager, Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama, shared a report on all the charitable initiatives undertaken by SRSG during 2025. If you would like to read the full report, you may do so here - SRSG Charity Initiatives at a Glance - 2025.

We vow to continue these efforts in the coming years in serving the larger society.

As we walk this path of self-purification together, our hearts are filled with gratitude, and we constantly seek the loving guidance and blessings from our revered Guru Lineage. We pray to the Sages of the Himalayan Tradition to continue to bless us with their boundless love and light.

In loving service,
Divya, AHYMSIN Office

Living Yoga: Ancient Wisdom for Modern Life in Malaysia

Breath, Balance and Beyond… Yoga for a Sustainable Life in Sabah, Malaysia
with Rabindra Sahu

Sabah-Retreat

We warmly invite you to join our 2025 Retreat — a time of renewal, reflection, and inner peace. Guided by Rabindra Sahu from Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama Ashram (SRSG), Rishikesh, India, this retreat offers an opportunity to experience timeless wisdom in a practical and heartfelt way. Through breathwork, yoga practices, and meditative guidance, you will explore how balance on the mat can inspire balance in daily living.

Take this time to recharge your body, refresh your mind, and reconnect with your spirit. Spaces are limited — reserve your place today and gift yourself this journey inward.

Peace, the Fruit of Silence: A Residential Silence Retreat in Italy

Italian-Silence-Retreat_2025

A Residential Silence Retreat with the teachers of the Himalayan Yoga Institute of Florence, Oasi Divin Maestro, Camaldoli, Italy.

The healing power of Silence, in action, word and thought, gives us a deeper understanding of ourselves. Diving into Silence leads us to witness, with deeper awareness, the nature of our mind, allowing it to calm down and turn inward. The proposed practices (hatha yoga, pranayama, relaxation, meditation, contemplative walking, etc.) will help us to dive deeper towards the centre of silence, immersed in the location of Camaldoli’s forest.

For more information, you may contact the Himalayan Yoga Institute of Florence directly at segreteria@himalayanyogainstitute.it or follow them on Facebook and Instagram. You may also visit their website.
