The Method for Inner Study~ Swami Rama Human beings are always disappointed in the external world, yet they have not turned inward to understand anything about the internal world. Those who begin to search the other dimensions of life come in contact with subtleties that are puzzling to them, and they do not know what to do next. People have been trained from childhood to observe, examine, and verify the things in the external world, but no one has taught them how to look within, how to verify within, and how to know within. The ancients contemplated on these issues for a long time, and they developed a method for studying the inner world. Just as modern scientists developed a method for analysing the nature of matter, so there is a positive and exact system that tells us how to analyse and understand inner life. Many people ask, for example, “Is there anything like a soul within us?” Modern philosophers deny any such entity because they are influenced by materialistic science. But are we really sure what science is? A few years ago, a Midwestern university sent out thousands of letters asking various scientists for their definition of science. The responses did not establish any clear-cut definition of science, so even the meaning of science is not defined as yet. According to the ancient yogis, however, science means vijnanam, the systematized and organized study that leads one to attain all the states of jnana – knowledge. Science is a way of knowing through the intellect; science is an external expression of inner knowledge. If anyone wants to be a student of the interior world, of the path of light, if he wants to do inner research, he will have to understand this point: one must have a purified, free and one-pointed mind to know and examine the interior Self. If the mind is not free, if one is prejudiced from the very beginning, influenced by a particular set of dogmas, doctrines, or formulas, then one can neither conduct nor complete any research. For conducting research within, one should be truthful, sincere, and free from prejudices. Research should not be shaded by social and cultural norms or religious fanaticism. It requires a totally independent and unbiased mind. One cannot lie to oneself. One should ask, “Am I really true to myself? Am I really a seeker?” Read more |
Mastery of Meditation Method~ Swami Veda Bharati The mastery of a particular method of meditation is judged in these ways: 1. I can sit well and enjoy sitting, which I did not do in the beginning. 2. When I am sitting still, my body, mind and nerves are relaxed. 3. Fewer and fewer random thoughts, fantasies or false visions arise. 4. When these thoughts, etcetera, do arise, they are of gradually shorter durations and weaker intensity. 5. The mind is free of them for progressively longer and longer durations – to be counted initially not in hours but in minutes.
6. Consequently, I have a greater feeling of quietness and stillness: 7. After arising from meditation, my feeling of calm and peace, as well as my awareness of my breath and repetition of the mantra continue deeper and longer through my daily activities. 8. I reach a certain plateau much more quickly after sitting than I did before. 9. In my daily activities, I have the desire to return for meditation more often. 10. During my daily activities, my breath awareness, mantra, and meditative state, or just my poise and calm, return to me frequently. 11. The depth I experience in the presence of a teacher when he is giving a group or person to person meditation, is a depth I begin to touch on my own, gradually at first, and then without fail. 12. As my depth in meditation is increasing, certain guidance in establishing more peaceful personal relationships is taking place. My ideas of morality, violence, non-violence, diet and other areas of the life style are changing. I am undisturbed by little things and not overjoyed by small successes, achievements and little gains, nor am I depressed as often as before at little failures. An additional test will be a reduced desire for and expectation of thrilling experiences, sights and sounds in meditation. The path of meditation is one of tranquility and calm and not of adventure trips. Read more |
Annual 40-Days Spiritual Festival~ 20 June – 29 July 2026
Each summer during the 40 days that precede Guru Purnima, sadhakas are invited to participate in the 40-Day Spiritual Festival, to expand and refine one’s sadhana. In 2026, the 40-Day Spiritual Festival will begin on 20th June and will end on 29th July, which is Guru Purnima. These 40 days are celebrated wherever you are. “We are all here for a purpose; it is an on-going spiritual process. We are all here for spiritual liberation and serving that mission. For that purpose we are purifying ourselves of our pride and ego. For these reasons we train ourselves in constant self-observation: to see oneself, to hear oneself to develop this internal dialogue. I have used one criterion for all my thoughts, my words, and my actions: ‘Is this conducive to spiritual liberation.’” It is a time to contemplate (and talk with others about) the many ways you can participate. In reviewing the guidelines and making your own commitments, please keep in mind your own capacity. Success with a series of smaller goals will lead to greater purification and capacity for next year. Assess your own capacity and do not try to push to complete “on time.” Accommodate for your family responsibilities. During these 40 days, yoga students can choose to intensify their yoga practice and/or make beneficial changes in their lifestyles, in a variety of ways. Here are just a few: - Increasing one’s practice of meditation and japa. |
What is Love~ Randall Krause (Mokshadeva) Love is all around us. Popular songs remind us that “love makes the world go round,” and “all you need is love.” But what do we really mean when we say, “I love you”? In his book Sadhana: The Essence of Spiritual Life, Swami Rama noted that love, as most of us practice it, is intertwined with selfishness. I need something, so I say 'I love you'. You need something, so you say 'you love me'. By that measure, what we call love in the world is really a form of mutual exchange — affection given in return for something we hope to receive. Swami Rama argued that true love is something entirely different: acting selflessly and spontaneously without expecting anything in return. Love is about giving — not giving to receive, but giving simply to help another. Read more |
