Power of Determination

~ Swami Rama

When you have developed a still posture and when you have done the breathing practices, you have made the first preparations for the technique of meditation. Next you have to deal with your conscious mind. The moment you start meditating, your mind becomes very independent. The whole mind will come forward to fight with you. You also want to eventually come into touch with the unconscious. Psychologists have not yet found a way of taming the unconscious, of knowing its vast reservoir, of tapping the unconscious, the source of the infinite library within you. The unconscious mind brings up things that are of the past, such as images. In meditation you are trying to maintain that state that is in between, neither the past nor the future, but the present – this moment.

This is a battlefield within. A meditator has to face this battlefield. Meditation is not meant to be a battlefield, but you use it as a battlefield. Perhaps an image or sensation comes to your mind that you decide is good – or a memory of a boyfriend whom you have forgotten long ago comes into your meditation, and then you decide that is bad. Thus you fight with yourself – all your impressions from the conscious and unconscious mind come forward.

You think you are small, petty, and good for nothing – you condemn yourself because of the limitations of the mind. Therefore you need to purify the mind. You need to understand your mind and to make it one-pointed. You need to make your mind dynamic so that you do not think that you are limited. All your troubles are created in your mind. But the mind also has the capacity to lead you. It works both ways: if you do not know how to make use of your mind, it can create hellish problems for you; if you know how to use it, it can lead you to a kind of heaven. You can realize that hell and heaven are concepts created by your mind. There are no such physical places, according to yoga science. One is not punished and sent to hell; it is your mind that takes you there. Many times you experience hell here in this world – but your efforts with the mind can convert this hell into heaven, and then you can enjoy this life.

Both Ways

~Swami Veda Bharati

When faced with a conflict of choices between two opposites, choose both; this way, you will become a bi-polar magnet or as the Hindi proverb says, you will end up with a laddoo in both hands. The truth is that there are no conflicting forces in the universe. All is complementary. Quantum physics also proves this: a force is both a photon particle and a light wave; an atomic particle is in two places at the same time.

I often trick my audience. In the middle of a lecture, I ask, 'What is the time?' Someone in the gathering tells me the time. I then prompt the same person to ask me what the time is. In answer, I ask, 'Where?'

Right now, is it night or is it day? The answer is both. Here it is day, in America it is night, and vice versa.

A philosopher [or guru] is a planetary citizen. Such a person cannot be partial to one hemisphere, either of the earth or of the brain. That is how you have it both ways.

As a young seeker, I would go to my master with a question: "Maharajji, should I do such and such thing this way or that way?" He would look at me and reply in a deep voice coming straight from the heart, "Yes!" That was often his only answer.

I had to contemplate deeply and resolve the apparent contradictions by adopting a common path in which the positive elements of both choices would be included. That is how you have it both ways.

A Special Maha-Shivaratri Celebration:
Renunciation: The Universal Belonging

~ with Swami Ritavan Bharati

Renunciation-The-Universal-Belonging

Swami Ritavan Bharati invites all sincere seekers to join this special program on the most auspicious occasion of the Maha-Shivaratri. In 2027, Maha-Shiavratri will be on 6 March 2027.

He has said,

'Let your Maha-Shivaratri pilgrimage to Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama draw you to receive the Guru's Embrace of Love that enwraps all spiritual seekers of Light. Plan to participate in the Shivaratri week-long activities that invites a deeper awareness and offers an opportunity for inner transformation when internal havan burns the dross of samskaras, and external havan with japa creates a transformative experience.

May these themes of fearlessness, non-attachment, and renunciation resonate with that innermost desireless state of equanimity and joy.

A renunciate breathes the life-breath of all; nurturing while being attached to none; gives support and encouragement to all without needing emotional support; beyond fears and jealousy, loving all, excluding none, with "abhayam" for there is no "other" to fear.

Let your heart remain open to receiving this calling of Lord Shiva, the Universal Renunciate.'

Biofeedback, Tai Chi, and Qigong Retreat

~ with Nikki Strong and Daniel Hertz

 biofeedback-tai-chi-and-qigong-retreat

Tai Chi and Qigong (Nikki):

Tai Chi: Our focus will be on practicing simple routines and movement drills that build body and mind awareness and help cultivate health and longevity in a way very complimentary to our regular Himalayan style practices, These practices will be taught at a level accessible to beginners but also offering more depth appropriate for experienced practitioners. At the end of the retreat each person will have a suite of movement practices and a mini Wudang Mountain Tai Chi form that they can use as they see fit, integrated into their daily life, or simply as an experience to help build insight into the practices they already have.

Qigong: The qigong that we will practice is a deeply healing and energetically balancing style of qigong that has its origins in the Shaolin temples and Daoist masters of the mountains of Central China. At the end of the retreat each participant will have a number of valuable tools to add to their toolbox for managing stress, building energetic resilience, and cultivating a healthier, more balanced, body, mind, and spirit.

Biofeedback (Daniel):

A few talks will be offered to explain the concepts of biofeedback. The focus would be on individual, one on one, private sessions with Daniel for all the participants.

Biofeedback is well-recognised as a powerful, non-invasive, and relatively simple way to measure subtle changes in the emotional and physiological state in order to increase self awareness and support the process of leaning self-regulation. Daniel will be using state of the art research/clinical grade biofeedback equipment (and training techniques) to measure HRV (Heart Rate Variability) to determine RFB (Resonant Frequency Breathing), the ideal breathing rate that will most quickly balance the autonomic nervous system. A typical session will use a heart rate sensor and a respiration belt. Participants will be guided through a series of Yoga and Meditation breathing exercises in order to determine the optimal RFB for that individual. Time permitting, other biofeedback modalities may be measured, such as muscle tension, skin temperature, or skin conductance.

 Symbols-and-Rituals

The Himalayan Yoga Institute of Florence organizes an online workshop with Rabindra Sahu dedicated to the theme of “Symbols and Rituals for a New Beginning in the Yoga practice”.

The workshop will be a precious occasion to contemplate and rediscover the significance of new beginnings according to certain principles of Yoga Philosophy and Vedic Astrology: whether it means embarking on a new chapter, a new phase of life, a new path, or simply continuing one’s journey with a fresh perspective and a spirit of joyful curiosity.

Rabindra Sahu, trained in the Himalayan Yoga Tradition, serves as General Manager at the Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) ashram in Rishikesh, where he teaches and leads the Gurukulam. A student of Swami Veda Bharati, Rabindra emphasises the importance of understanding the teachings through direct experience.

Registration required.

Silence Retreat in Italy
with the teachers of the Himalayan Yoga Institute of Florence, Oasi Divin Maestro, Camaldoli, Italy.

Peace, the Fruit of Silence
November 26th - 29th 2026

 Silence-Retreat-in-Italy

The healing power of Silence, in action, word and thought, gives us a deeper understanding of ourselves. Diving into Silence leads us to witness, with deeper awareness, the nature of our mind, allowing it to calm down and to turn inward. The practices of hatha yoga, pranayama, relaxation, meditation, contemplative walking will help us to dive deeper towards the centre of silence, immersed in the beauty of Camaldoli’s forest.

“However, it is not Silence if you are silent because you happen to be alone!

Silence is silence when you have the intention, make the sankalpa, to keep a spiritual silence and then your mind is filled with spiritual contemplation and mantra, whether sitting, eating, bathing, lying down or running.”

- Swami Veda Bharati
