On a Festival Called Savitri…by Dr. Shirin Venkat20 December 2012Excitedly I reached the airport at 11 am to receive Savitri and Dr. Shiv [Jugdeo] who had willingly and kindly agreed to do a refresher’s course at the Pune Center while on their way to Lonavla to visit the Kaivalyadham Ashram of Yoga. It was as if a bit of Swami Veda came with them! At 5.30 pm, six mothers-to-be and a few others, including a father-to-be, came for the usual Wednesday class which had been postponed to Thursday so Savitriji could then conduct it live for them. Each one asked when was the next session. 21 December 2012  6 am found about 14 participants including 2 mothers-to-be and one post cancer treatment patient (she came for 4 sessions and felt really good) ready for the course. It was wonderful – we did Joints and Glands exercises/ special Prananyama and meditation – all dispersed after a cup of tea feeling fresh and relaxed. 4.30 pm, another set of students came for the evening session on Hatha and Pranayama which actually began with Meditation and centering. Savitriji asked what the students would like and then did what she was inspired to do! Dr. Shiv gave a brief talk on the ‘Importance of Mantra.’ This led to a nice interactive session. His quiet presence throughout was ennobling. 22 December 2012  6 am another group of students with just one pregnant girl attended. We did great stretches and special exercises to relieve back problems. Makarasana, Pranayama followed by meditation. 4.30 pm. Many ladies attended; two of whom quietly told me they might leave early as they had a party to attend actually stayed the longest! The program was going so well we almost felt it should continue forever. 23 December 2012  We had arrived at the last session and somehow no one felt inclined to work too hard- Savitriji intuitively put us into Makarasana followed by Shavasana and then a surprise – 31 point meditation. One of us was so moved she had tears streaming down her cheeks when we were brought out of all the relaxation we had experienced. Through the three days we laughed as if we were in school and we discovered that Savitri is like 9 days younger than I and so I am her older twin! It has been such fun. We truly are family – that was the key term I used to request her and Dr. Shiv to stay with us, and she could not refuse. “The whole tradition will be against me if I did” she said!
