Teaching Joints & Glands

by Alice Coelho

Teaching Joints & Glands Exercises at the Parish Centre of Our Lady of Mt. Carmel & St. George in Enfield, UK, has been a wonderful, fulfilling mission and a deep learning of how we can help our aging population benefit from the practice of Joints & Glands developed by Swami Rama of our Himalayan Yoga Tradition.

It began in March 2017 with an offer of three months free classes: chair sessions for the less able, followed by a mat session. These classes gained interest and the attendees varied from 18 to 25. A few would stay on for the entire 1 hour 45 minutes.

I now run classes twice a week for a fee of £5 per person where £1 from every participant is donated to the church. My oldest student is 87 years old and participates in both the chair and mat sessions.

I have been practicing yoga since my early twenties. However in 2013, I was introduced to the Himalayan Yoga Tradition which was timely in helping change the whole course of my life. I was suffering from RSI, a frozen shoulder and a bad knee which were the result of life and working in a stressful environment.

Arriving at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama Ashram was like coming home. The peace and tranquility of the place, the kind and caring demeanor of the people was balm to my heart.  I will always be grateful to the people who made this possible and for the people who I have met at the Ashram, who have enriched my life.

The daily routine of prayers, followed by the Joints & Glands classes had the most significant influence on me and when I was leaving I bought the DVDs of Marilou Hermens’ Morning Joints & Glands & Asana Class. These became part of my weekly routine as I returned home to a regular daily practice. I owe a lot of my learning to Marilou and an immeasurable amount of gratitude to the Himalayan Yoga Tradition, as that was end of me spending large amounts of money on osteopathy, physiotherapy and therapeutic massages and the beginning of a healthy, meaningful and spiritual life.

It is for all the above reasons that I am passionate to share this practice with as many people as possible.

As life changed, the first thing I did was enroll in the TTP (Teacher Training Program) which has been most enlightening, inspiring and has helped me in my mission to share the practice of Joints & Glands with who-so-ever was willing to learn.

Having Marilou monitor my class was priceless, and this was her very kind post on Facebook

“Being the mentor of Alice Coelho, who is in the Teachers Training [Program] of the Himalayan Yoga Tradition, it was also a great opportunity to attend her yoga class yesterday morning. She is doing an amazing job teaching Joints and Glands series from Swami Rama to students of 70-88 years. This was the most impressive class I have ever seen. The power and benefits of these exercises have many positive affects for these women. Thank you Alice, for being such a dedicated and caring student/teacher.”

Some of the testimonials are:

“Learning to breathe properly has helped me with the shortness of breath I have been experiencing in the last 6 months following a bad chest infection.”

“I have now learned to maintain an improved posture, by keeping my core firm, my head upright and my shoulders relaxed when walking. Previously, I have been falling in the street and I now realise it was due to my bad posture. I now have a little control in the right arm, when bringing it down from the extended position. Previously, I had no control due to the weak shoulder. It just used to drop down.
12 breaths per minute.”

“Exercise has been very helpful to me. It has enabled me to walk and move better.  Breathing has been improved. Thank you, Alice.”

“More aware of my breathing, inclined to breathe deeply. Feeling more flexible and relaxed.  Improved posture and sense of wellbeing.”

“I greatly enjoyed finding the dedication and effort required. I improved my balance - always a weak spot. My knees have improved…very necessary.”
