March 2014 TTP Newsletter

by Maryon Maass

We were a cozy group of 12 at the bi- annual HYT-TTP retreat this spring at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG), but the schedule was no less intensive than usual. What was different with this group? Not one person suggested time off from the daily schedule; they all wanted more and more!!

The students in this teacher training retreat were from Europe, India and China; we are so lucky to have met them, as they are so clever and enjoyable. The professions and backgrounds were varied, a professor in forestry, a dentist, a Sanskrit scholar, 2 ayurvedic practitioners, a retired air force wing master, a banker, and an entrepreneur as well .

Thank you to the teachers that flew in from around the globe to teach hatha, philosophy, anatomy and the anatomy of postures, and, of course, the most popular and always the most awaited course is our course on “How to do the mentoring hours for home study” <smile>

The addition to the TTP classes was Mary Bowman-Cline’s assistant, Jennifer Manion; both Mary and Jennifer are from Minnesota, USA. Together they taught classes in  Anatomy in Clay™ ; for this special workshop on yoga anatomy the registrants signed up separately and were given credit hours for TTP “anatomy contact hours”.

Other main teachers that we can mention are our regular teachers Peter Fabian from USA, who comes twice a year, leaving his practice and family to be with us here in SRSG, Swami Ma Radha from India and USA; Dr. Prabhu and Chandramani from India; Ashutosh, whose home is in Germany, but who has family in Rishikesh keeps us “moving”; and Dr. Stephen Parker (Stoma), from USA who seems to be in the sky as much as on the soil.

As always our gifted gurukulam teachers were up early and ready for our new batch every morning for the morning prayers and integrated lessons of Joints and Glands .

We were blessed with meditation on a daily basis with Swamiji, and we feel his presence with us each day. Often he comes to the meditation hall as early as 4 pm to do his personal practices and just to see him is an honor. Thank you, Swamiji, for being there for us.

The students:

  • Youhua Zeng
  • Lucy ( Hong Yu) Li
  • Lixia Sujala Ma
  • Patiricija Kos
  • Riemke de Groot
  • Niruvashnee Govender
  • Krishna Kumar, Ph.D.
  • Vinod Grover
  • Ribhu Tiwari
  • Shruti Trikha
  • Prerna Singh (Bhrati Panwar)

The students learned the basics of the Himalayan Tradition and the foundations of the first level, and the teachers gave all they had to give in the 2 weeks which always includes keeping the head neck and trunk in a straight line!… Many learned how to apply colors at Holi and found that reciprocity was immediate. All had fun and were doused with happiness all morning long.

Mentors and Students: This month’s TIPS

I would like to mention a tip for TTP’ers who plan to attend the next level of training. You will need to be approved by your mentor as having completed your assignments and met the minimum hours required for the Home Study.

When that body of work is approved by the senior mentor you will need to let us know by email that that process is complete for you.

Please contact Maryon Maass at hyt.ttp@gmail.com  and I will give you further instructions for attending the next level. Do not register on line a second time.  The first time your registered was the only time necessary; you are in the system as a fully registered student.

Are you READY to take the FINAL EXAMS for Level ONE or THREE?

What to do to prepare?

First: you must let the office know that your mentor and senior mentor approved you.

Second: 3 months prior to your arrival to Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama or in Minnesota, you will let us know you are coming by sending Maryon Maass an email. The  primary lead teachers need this information as they need to plan time in advance for your practical and written exams. You can ask to have the “take home” exam prior to your arrival; ask your mentor to write to me.

Communication

Please communicate with us regularly as to what your plans are so we can serve you properly.

  • Do you need a mentor?
  • Do you need some encouragement?
  • Do you need a few questions answered?

Just ask, check in with us at hyt.ttp@gmail.com

Too confused? … no problem, our department is available 24/7 for you by email.  Remember that you can review (attend again) any level for half price!! Not only that, but the hours you spend in Level One hatha, anatomy and time spent talking to a mentor will be used for “Mentor – Student-Contact Hours”.

Breath Practices and Silence Retreat

March was a busy month.  We ended with TTP on the 22nd, and on the 23rd we started the “Breath Practices and Silence,”  which lasted until April 6th. The second retreat will be held this time next year (Breath and Silence Retreat, 22nd March - 5th April 2015 at SRSG). Participants were informed, and some taught for the first time pranayama sequences, then daily and hourly they practiced over and over with the watchful guidance of the ashram teaching staff. This experience brought home the significance of the power that Makarasana, Nadi Shodhanam , Kapalabati , Bhramari have when combined.

Editor’s Note:

Himalayan Yoga Tradition – Teacher Training Program (HYT-TTP) offers twice yearly retreats at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama in Rishikesh, India, and a summer retreat in Minnesota, USA.  Please see the website http://www.himalayanyogatradition.com/ for more information.

The next retreat in India will be 9th – 22nd November 2014; please see http://www.himalayanyogatradition.com/india.html

Maryon also happily announces about the HYT-TTP office at SRSG: “Got a new linoleum floor in the TTP office… it looks good.”  The carpet with mildew was finally removed.

Ammaji (Mrs. Lalita Arya) shared through the KHEL Facebook page:

“Mary Bowman-Cline, an artist and yoga teacher from Minnesota, was recently in India and met with me at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG), Swami Veda’s ashram. She was very involved with the yoga and anatomy classes at the ashram, so wasn’t able to visit Lakshmi Devi Academy (LDA), KHEL’s school for underserved children in Dehradun, India, which is about 90 minutes from SRSG. In the course of our conversation she showed me the 5 model skeletons she’d brought with her for the yoga and anatomy classes. Shaping the internal organs out of clay is part of the teaching process. Knowing Mary quite well, I asked her to donate one of the skeletons to LDA, which she promptly did. Thank you, Mary! Your gift will have a positive impact on many children.”

From the KHEL Facebook page: “KHEL Charities is a 26 year old non-profit secular organization registered in the US and India, with the majority of service occurring in Dehradun, India. We provide equal opportunity education, support and employment, and we actively promote the ideals of non-violence, tolerance and respect. KHEL believes that it is through one’s own efforts that sustainable success is possible; thus, our primary mission is educating impoverished children at Lakshmi Devi Academy (LDA), our preschool-8th grade school in Dehradun. By educating impoverished children, KHEL gives future generations the necessary tools to improve their lives and break the cycle of poverty and social marginalization. In addition, KHEL supports three leprosy colonies in Dehradun and offers aid to other communities.”
