Thirty-One Graduate from Sewing School
Thirty one women graduated during the 2011 Sewing School graduation ceremony held at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama in July. A happy celebration for graduates and community. Since 2006, Dhyana Mandiram Trust has provided for a sewing school in the village where Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama is located. It provides sewing teachers and scholarship for girls and women to attend classes in the community hall provided to the trust by village Panchayat. The name of the school is Mahila Silai, Kadhai Prashichan Kendra "Dhyana Mandiram Trust" Gramouthayan Pariyojanatgrt and classes are held at Gram Panchat Bhavan, Virpur Khurd, Rishikesh. There are 48 students registered. Girls and women from the village are given scholarships to study sewing so they can learn a skill, be independent and take up jobs to earn an income. The training includes basic sewing skills to tailoring skills as well as embroidery. Each year the sewing school grades the students’ abilities. Colorful displays of each woman’s sewing and embroidery work hang from the walls of the community hall and cover the tables. In addition, each student makes a notebook filled with miniature clothing, each piece demonstrating certain techniques and abilities. Many skills are displayed for grading. The students stand with and present their work. Representatives from DMT and SRSG are invited to meet the students and teachers and to share in this event, which is a real community event to which the leaders of the community come. Editor's Note:The sewing school is a charitable activity of Dhyana Mandiram Trust and as such is a charitable activity of our sangha. One of the activities listed in the AHYMSIN constitution is “performing acts of charity for the benefit of humanity.”
