Bhakti, Meditation and Guru

Tonight we are going to be talking of bhakti yoga, yoga of devotion, love, emotion. In this branch of yoga, chanting is the greatest expression of emotion. When the spirit is filled with love the song bubbles out. There are certain mantras which are collective and common. You may call them a thousand names of the deity. You may call them a thousand affirmations of your own divine nature and as your mind is filled with the thought of peace and quiet from your heart center an emotion wells up and it bursts into a chant.

Spiritual Roots of Arts, Culture and Ethics

I will now take the question of what is culture, what is religion and what is spirituality. In the teachings of all the wise men of the world, religion and culture start from spirituality. This spirituality is a personal realization of the principles that run the universe. Some may call it God, some may call it dharma, still others may call it enlightenment, but it has to be an inner personal realization. For this, the personal resolve that: the truth that Buddha or Lao Tzu realized, may I realize the same truth. What Lao Tzu or Jesus realized, may I realize the same truth. All efforts that go towards that internal realization are called spirituality.

This is not a sad time of remembrance but a time of serene reunion, and that is how the anniversaries of sacred beings should be observed and celebrated. Many people are still under the impression that a great being leaving his body means he has died. That is because we do not understand the meaning of life and death. For me his last book, Sacred Journey, has become a bible for guidance.
How to Counsel Yourself

The title is the principles of self-counseling. It will be more or less a summary of numerous courses over many years – courses like Emotions as Acts of Will [Volition], Uncovering the Secrets of a Lasting Relationship, and numerous other ones. And those who are listening to this subject for the first time may use the tapes of those previous courses as commentaries or explanations of what I will say here very briefly.

All teaching, like ancient silk and modern jackets, originated in China. As you know, tea is a sacred plant in China. The Chinese word for a book is ‘ching’. They serve a lot of tea while teaching the sacred books. So, the act became known as ‘tea-ching’ = teaching.

If you have come to learn from the tradition of Swami Rama and all the sages of the past going back to Patañjali and you have learned something from these great teachers who have been serving you day and night, then you will go back and you will not teach yoga at the level of a certificate. You will not teach yoga on the strength of a certificate. You will teach yoga on the strength of your spiritual personality. Your magnetism that comes from meditation.

A matter seen or inferred by accomplished persons is taught in the form of words in order to transfer their knowledge into another. The vṛitti (वृत्ति) from that word, with its matter and meaning as the object, is the listener's acquisition (āgama).
