SVB Birthday Blessing 2009

Swami Veda Bharati
…just this tremendous amount of love everywhere from people I did not know. And I’ve found that God has made a very, very loving world, and my prayer for you is that you find your world to be the same, and my prayer for myself is that whether someone throws roses at me or throws mud at me, I should remain the same and there should be no change in the level of my love. That’s my prayer for myself, and for you, may you find the world to be as full of love as beautiful as that I have found in traveling around to strange places, new places. Everywhere may you find the same.

I don’t know, thanks is not enough. Songs from Greece and poems from Italy and from Holland and from Surinam and something I had composed sixty years ago has been sung for me today. One thing has been in my life. Whichever country, whichever society, whichever group of people I am with, it feels to me that they are my people. Whichever country I am in, I feel this is my country and this is my language. Their literature is my literature, and their customs are my customs, and their philosophers are philosophers of my lineage. So, I’ve enjoyed sitting at the spot where Plato’s academy is in Athens, the ruins of that. When I was sitting there, I felt I was making an ancient connection just as I feel in the temples of the Himalayas.

I wish you all, there is nothing else I can give you in response to what you have given me, I wish you all, wish for you all, always a very beautiful and loving world. God bless you.

75th-Birthday Blessing-2008

It was beautiful. Someone whom I have known from the age of 7, I’d never thought in those years of 1956-57 that we will be meeting here. Such a touching occasion for me. The whole history from that country where I was serving Guyana to this day here in Rishikesh. And tonight, Hungarian song-hymn sung to the tabla rhythms in Rishikesh. What can be a better demonstration of a world culture. And here we are creating this world culture so beautifully expressed. Those things make me blush.

I’ll share one secret with you. When I first moved to India, I said to my mind. This is too much. I can’t take it. Such reverence, every composition you have presented tonight. I surrender to my Guru. It’s his. Long, long, long ago, 2~3 years after I first met him in 1969, 1970-71, in a little yellow house in Minneapolis, in the USA, he said to me, ‘Teri sari ichayein puri karunga.’ I fulfill all your desires. I didn’t even know what my desires were.

And I missed those days and those countries, the flow of Ganga, the singing of Gita Govinda in Sanskrit. And today, by Guru’s grace and really by Guru’s grace and truly only by Guru’s grace, all that is present here, Ganga is flowing. I can go and have the darshan of Mother Ganga any day I want. And “Gita Govinda” is sung and my beloved disciple Jyoti and her students, and their coming up give us hope for the future that this song and dance tradition, this culture-tradition will continue. And when they did the prakriti puja, offering, as worship and appreciation to Nature, I cried. You may not understand the symbols of the hands and the facial gestures. But my heart cried, overfilled with joy. You filled me with such love.

But I have one desire yet unfulfilled. If you really wish to honor me, wish to love me, do two things for me. This, I am saying to my students. First, love each other. All those here at SRSG, you love this Swami, but you don’t love each other. If you want to love me, love each other. Secondly, make yourself adhikarin so that the knowledge coming down from thousands of years of tradition can be passed on and can continue.

Everything that you have given me tonight, I will keep it filled inside me. Allow me to take this occasion to thank all those who have played a role in creating whatever I have been. The sacrifices that they have made so I could reach where I’ve reached, yet, still short of my goal. I give them my appreciation. I thank you.

And the third condition, if you want to love me, meditate. That is our true relationship. Silent love is the best love in the universe. And my master, Swami Rama said “Love is the Lord of All.” And today you have shown that love. But I would be happy when you show that love to each other. That I want to see here.

I thank you all, thank you all from the depth of my heart.

God bless you.

SVB Birthday Blessing 2005

svb

I have been given the good fortune in this incarnation to have three birthdays in a year. Yes, this day (24th March) identifies the birth day of this body. But when you receive yoga-diksha, the real yoga-diksha, you are led through dying and rebirthing. That body doesn’t exist anymore and then you are reborn. This is a secret among the yogis. You were body-bound, outward identified, now you have become inward. Your senses ordinarily flow outwards, from the moment of yoga-diksha, there is a “pull” and your senses develop the inclination of an inward flow. You operate in the world but you remain an “insider”. So that is the real death and birth of a yogi. Death is not unconscious, death is a conscious process. And the yoga diksha is a rebirth, so this is one of my birthday celebrations.

The third birthday is on the day this one received the diksha of sannyasa. On that day, one too does shradha to one’s self. One celebrates his own funeral and purifies the 7 generations of his family heritage through that act. So I am happy that I can have three birthdays to celebrate. Everybody gets one birthday remembering the birth of the body. In this body, with the time given, one uses their life situations, and relationships within a lifespan to pay off whatever karmas, karmic debts that we owe. And if you keep this goal in mind, the day all the karmic debts are paid off, that day renounce. By renouncing your desires, you are free. Whatever desire you seek to fulfill, you become attached to their results, to the fruits. Then it becomes a karma, then it binds you, then it ties you. Whatever desires i have had, my Master has fulfilled them. It’s just unending grace of the Master presented to me. Yet, if a yogi or a sannyasin becomes attached to the enjoyment of that desire then fresh karma begins again. So I watch myself and question, “Am I getting attached to this desire, or grasping this fulfillment I am receiving.” The moment I see a sign of attachment I do “something” inside me.

Along with attachment to the fruits of desires, there develops pride. It is a culture in India, a tradition in the sense that one learns to make ones self small. Keep yourself small and you will become big. So my blessing would be, may you know how to make yourself small. I wrote a poem at one time in which I sent a blessing. May Guru grant you a meditation shawl under which everyone shelters. I pray that my shawl be so extensive like that of my Master, to shelter everyone who seeks freedom from their attachments, pride, greed, and fears.

Now Feel the flow and the touch of the breath in the nostrils.

Breathing-out and breathing-in with your mantra with no breaks between the breaths. Observe how mind, mantra and the breath are flowing as a single stream of awareness. Let your entire mind becomes an even flowing stream, and without breaking the flow of the stream gently open your eyes. May God and Gurudev bless you all.

AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering 2023 – A Global Family Celebration

With Guru’s Grace, we were recently blessed with the Lord Ganesha’s blessings who removed all obstacles for all our global family members to finally return home at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama (SRSG) for the AHYMSIN Sangha Gathering from 12-25 February 2023. This was our first biggest event at SRSG since 2016, and it was heartwarming to see everyone once again after such a long gap of many years. As many as 180 people from 22 countries joined the gathering at SRSG this year. Many members of the AHYMSIN Spiritual Committee and AHYMSIN Executive Committee, senior teachers, AHYMSIN centre leaders, and family members from all over the world came home for this joyous occasion. Some members had not been to the ashram for as many as 12 years. It was a beautiful gathering of family that is a celebration rooted in our connection with guru and each other, through our mantras, meditation and our practices.

The whole ashram was decked up with more than 100,000 beautiful and fragrant flowers everywhere to welcome the family. Right from the main entrance, Mandala Office, Mother Mary Temple, Buddha Temple, all the statues and inscriptions within the Main Building, both the Meditation Halls, Initiation Room, Yajnashala, Dining Hall, Ma Tara Temple, Shiva Temple, Shankaracharya Temple were all decorated with long strings of flower garlands. There were many Rangoli and Mandala formations done on the floor of the Main Building with flowers. The ashram looked simply exquisite and heavenly as the flower decorations were only a reminder of our collective longing within us all of the celebration that was to follow.

The fragrance of these flowers reminded us once again of our beloved Swami Veda, not just because he loved flowers, but also of his teachings. His words were ringing in our ears as a reminder of how we are enveloped in the light and beauty of His ashram and His teachings:

There is an ancient passage that says, “That you have to enter into meditation is the proof of your bondage and ignorance.” How do you still that which is already still? How do you illuminate that which is self luminous? Do you pour perfume on jasmine to make it fragrant? Do you raise a candle so that with the light of that candle you may see the sun? With what eyes can you see your own eyes? With what other ocean are you going to fill the ever-full ocean? What sugar could you sprinkle on a honeycomb filled with honey to further sweeten it? Follow the philosophy of fullness, and when you are aware of your own fullness, you feel that there is nothing wanting, nothing missing, and you are ever joyful.

Joyful does not mean “full of joy,~ it means the “joy of fullness~—joy that is fullness. The one who is aware of infinite fullness is aware of infinite joy. This is not a condition produced from outside. A silk or paper flower needs a perfume to make it fragrant. Many people think that meditation is something like sprinkling perfume on our lotuses, as though we have no natural perfume of our own. The essence of our being, the honey of these flowers, is distributed by the buzzing bees of nada, internal sound, throughout every cell of this honeycomb called the body.

The gathering started with Guru Puja on Feb 12 by invoking the blessings of the Guru lineage in presence of Swami Ritavan Bharati (our Ashram Pramukha and Spiritual Guide), Swami Radha Bharati, Swami Tattvananda Bharati, Swami Atma Bodhi Shree, Swami Ameyaananda Bharati, Swami Tripurashakti Bharati, Swami Prayag Giri, and other members of the AHYMSIN Spiritual committee including Shi Hong, Wong Yoong Khiang, Matilde Caro, Sofia Foteina, Pt Ashutosh Sharma, Anna Mezosi, Adhikari Bhoi, and Tinyu Chen.

The Sangha Gathering began with a thought-provoking and inspiring opening address by Swami Ritavan and Shi Hong where they welcomed all the members of the sangha and reaffirmed our beloved Swami Veda’s vision for AHYMSIN and the Sangha. Under their auspices, we re-dedicated ourselves to the meaningful goals of life, and renewed our purpose of this lifetime.

Swami Ritavan gave us “Aapo Deepo Bhava: Be a Light unto Oneself” as our theme for this year’s gathering. The term originates from Buddha’s teachings. In Hindi, it is read as “Aapo Deepo Bhava”; in Pali, it would be “Appo Deepo Bhava”. It is often understood as an instruction from the Guru to the disciple to light his/her own lamp within. However, it may also be seen as a blessing from the Guru to the disciple to be/become the source of that light and thereby become an instrument to spread this light.

We were blessed to have received talks on our theme from Swami Ritavan Bharati. Swami ji also invited senior teachers including Swami Tripurashakti Bharati, Wong Yoong Khiang, Pt Ashutosh Sharma, Pt Priyadharshan (Pierre Lefebvre), John Sellinger, and Rabindra Sahu to share their own understanding and reflections on the theme with the sangha members.

All the participants were divided in smaller groups and special guided meditations were offered by Swami Ritavan Bharati, and other mantra initiators in the Initiation Room. There was also a special guided meditation by Swami Ritavan in the Meditation Hall for all. Swami Radha Bharati had visited the ashram after many years, and we basked in her loving presence and were blessed to have the opportunity of practicing OM Kriya under her guidance. The sangha members also got the opportunity to learn from the many mantra initiators who were present at SRSG as they spoke on “Mantra, meditation and initiation”.

As is the practice in the Ashram, each Thursday (Guruvaara in Hindi – the Day of the Guru) is the day of silence. The silence practice on every Thursday included Akhanda Japa (non-stop recitation of the mantra) in the Meditation Hall and in the Initiation room in the loving and meditative presence of Adhyatma Samiti members. On the first Thursday (16 Feb), we did japa of the Ganesha Gayatri Mantra, while the following week (on 23 Feb), we offered japa of the new Ganesha Mantra. The Akhanda Japa continued from 9 am – 9 pm, as all the participants, and residents kept silence together. This collective silence and japa practice was one of the most special moments of the Sangha Gathering.

As part of the Swami Rama Dhyana Gurukulam, the students are learning ‘Vedic Chanting’ (Ghanpatha Recitation) under the guidance of Rabindra Sahu. This includes learning to properly recite Vedic mantras and stotras in the traditional way of chanting according to the Krishna Yajur Veda. One of the practices that have been undertaken in the Gurukulam this year is learning to chant the Ganapati Prarthana Ghanpatha and the Gayatri Mantra Ghanpatha. The students had been practicing the chantings for many hours each day for a month before the Sangha Gathering began, and offered a special session of chanting during the gathering.

Every day we were blessed to practice with the senior teachers from the many AHYMSIN centres as they each guided the sessions on Joints & Glands exercises, Hatha Yoga and Breathing practices. We also had four sessions of ‘AHYMSIN Family Connections’, where all the regional centre leaders of AHYMSIN affiliated and friendly centres shared more about their centres, teaching programmes, and their future visions with each other. They supported each other by sharing ideas and suggestions from their own learnings. This allowed us to get to know about all of the efforts they have put in towards Swami Veda’s mission. Their successes are inspiring and heartening.

A presentation was shared by Rabindra Sahu on the operations of Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama ashram for the past four years, which included the major renovation and construction works, finances, charity projects. He talked about the contributions and love offerings received from our global family members that helped in sustenance of the ashram during the pandemic, while supporting the construction projects. The next steps to strengthen the mission were discussed and included – training teachers and building youth force, renovation of the cottages, enhance centre relations, publications and sustenance.

On 14 Feb, elections were held for the AHYMSIN executive committee and office bearers, where all the initiates voted for the various positions. Results were announced the same day. Shi Hong ji from Hong Kong has now been appointed as the President of AHYMSIN by Swami Ritavan Bharati.

As in our previous gatherings, all of us received a special mantra practice for the entire AHYMSIN Sangha. Just as during the last sangha gathering in 2019, Swami Ritavan wrapped us all again in his love and blessings through the Ganesha Mantra meditation shawl. We also received a Rudrakasha hand-mala and Ganga-Jala (holy water from the Ganges) from Swamiji as blessings.

The new Ganesha Mantra we have received from Swamiji is:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ।

Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ ।

Salutations to Lord Ganapati.

We offered our final japa with the Ganesha Gayatri Mantra practice on the morning of the Mahashivaratri with the purnahuti (the concluding fire offering) at the Yajnashala. Collectively, we then took a sankalpa for the new Ganesha Mantra practice and began a 6-day yajna (fire offering) where 7 pandits presided over the pujas and fire offerings. Simultaneously, our classes, sessions, and practices continued on.

On the morning of the Mahashivaratri, 8 members of the Sangha received Vanaprastha vows from Swami Ritavan Bharati – Atma and Fernando from Spain, Sarojini from Mauritius, Heejung, Borim, Meekyung and Yaehee from Korea, and Chuck Linke from the USA (our new Sr. Vice President).

The Mahashivaratri was celebrated at the Sadhana Mandir, SRSG, and Virbhadra Temple on 18 Feb. The pujas began at 6pm and continued throughout the night, until 5am on the next morning. It was heartwarming and inspiring to see so many members of the spiritual family enthusiastically participating in all the beautiful rituals, while sacrificing their sleep.

At this auspicious occasion, two new books by Swami Veda Bharati were released and offered to all the initiates and students of the Tradition. The titles of these two new publications are – You & Your Emotions and Signs of Spiritual Progress. Additionally, Swamiji’s Superconscious Meditation and Philosophy of Hatha Yoga book was also reprinted and is now available once again in our bookstore. All these books were released on the sacred Mahashivaratri day.

As was the case with all the previous sangha gatherings, we invited various artists from the Indian classical arts. The sangha members enjoyed soulful performances of Bharatanatyama dance led by Dr Sadhanashree P. from Sadhana Sangam Trust. Sadhanashree and her family are long term initiates of the Tradition, and both her parents were/are mantra initiators within the Himalayan Tradition trained by Swami Rama. We also experienced a mesmerising Santoor performance by Pt Mohan Singh Rawat ji and a heartfelt Hindustani Classical Vocal performance by Shri Ashish Kukreti ji. We also invited 11 students from the Sanskrit School that the Ashram supports. They chanted the Swasti Vachana, Purusha Sukta and Rudra Sukta.

This Sangha Gathering was special and unique in many ways. We went on a pilgrimage to the Surkanda Devi temple in Kanatal, near Mussoorie. Almost all the members joined this beautiful excursion, along with Swami Ritavan and most of the mantra initiators.

We also celebrated our theme of the gathering with lighting of 5000 earthen lamps (diyas). Preparation for this special “Diwali” lamp lighting began more than a month ago, whereby all the residents and visiting sadhakas at the ashram prepared the 5000 cotton wicks by hand. All the members of the Sangha, young and old, helped prepare the 5000 diyas, by washing them with water, drying them out in air, laying them out all over the ashram campus, from the rooftops of the Main Building, Gurukulam building, and New Block buildings, to the many pathways, the main entrance, outside each of the cottages, rooms, in the garden, etc. While we had turned off all the electrical lights that night, every corner of the ashram was lit up as the entire ashram was filled with the magnificent lamps and their light. As the night progressed, these tiny diyas managed to bring silence, stillness and light within each of our hearts. We received 5000 reminders that night of the light within.

We gathered at the Meditation Hall after the lamp lighting and Swami Ritavan recited the poem – Light by Swami Veda Bharati. Many of our international family members then offered the same poem in their respective languages. Translations were shared in Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Oriya, Russian, Sanskrit and Spanish. Even if we didn’t understand the poem in other languages than our own, the recitations were somehow equally beautiful and meditative. There was a unique union of light, silence and peace that night, which I had not experienced before… One could see some sangha members walking silently, deep in contemplation, and filled with light within, late until after midnight.

The last event in our two weeks of the gathering was a large bonfire by the Dining Hall after dinner, along with a delicious dark chocolate cake. We had the most beautiful impromptu kirtana (devotional singing) by the bonfire, accompanied with Guitar, where many members offered devotional songs in Sanskrit, English and their own local languages.

This magnificent event with so many participants was only made possible with the boundless love and support of all the residents, staff members, Gurukulam students, and our global family members. Everywhere one looked, one could see people spreading their inherent light through their seva, in the Dining Hall, Meditation Hall, etc.

Much went into our preparations for the Sangha Gathering, including a complete renovation of the Meditation Hall. While we were waiting for all our family members to return home, we completely redid the ceiling and electrical work in the Meditation Hall. This included new sound system, speakers, lights, fans, curtains, carpets, etc. The renovated Meditation Hall now has a new altar. As Swamiji and many people noted, the Meditation Hall was somehow miraculously ready just on time.

The lunch was served in bhandara style, and many people came forward to help serve the food and clean up the Dining Hall after each of the meals. Our lovely volunteers were sometimes in the Dining Hall many hours after the meals, cleaning, wiping, drying each of the utensils by hand, to prepare everything for the next meal. The food was naturally extra nourishing and delicious throughout the Sangha Gathering, as it was cooked with the secret ingredient of ‘Love’. I somehow am missing the gathering for the lovely company and scrumptious food also.

We received countless presents of love and care from all the family members, who brought many gifts, including exquisite chocolates, coffee, foods from different countries, etc. Our hearts (and stomachs) were overfilled with their love.

I am filled with unbounded gratitude for all the family members whose loving and meditative presence at this unique confluence brought us all much love and joy. It is a long wait until the next Sangha Gathering in 2026…

Transitioning from Ganesha Gayatri to the essential Ganesha Mantra

The look on your faces seems to give me the impression that you are examining & questioning the fruits of your Sankalpa-vow, the one year of the many thousands upon thousands of Ganesh Gayatri that you recited in mind & heart. Question only – have I deeply felt something? Examine only – have I observed some changes in myself.

Let us look again and remind ourselves once again of the purpose of the mantra, and the vow of your one-year dedication and efforts.

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः । Om Gaṁ Gaṇapataye Namaḥ ।

Lord Ganesha, the divine force who is the remover of obstacles in our life, in our sadhana; and provides the physical and emotional stability that we all aspire for by removing such obstacles, resistances, and conflicts enhancing our clarity and spiritual understanding lighting and enlightening our path of sadhana.

Lord Ganesha represents firm determination. Whenever our mind is resolute, it is also fearless. By letting go of fear all our obstacles are systematically overcome.

Ganesha, the lord of the ‘Adhara’, allows the Muladhara to form a stable platform, an essential foundation for your personality, thus establishing inner strength and conviction for all your choices, all your decisions, and a base of intelligence.

Your practice, your meditations, become regular and consistent and carry prominence in your daily routines. Meditation makes time for itself. Through this deepening awareness and the depth of this stabilizing force, your transformation is self-inspired through the fruits of divine light, innate wisdom unshakable faith, and the grace-filled presence of the divine force,

The ajapa-japa of the Ganesha mantra provide an abundance of grace, by way of purification leading to pacification along with determination and aspiration that leads to Self-Realization.

The global sangha mantra contributes to the collective intention. Last year with the Ganesha Gayatri japa and this year with the essential Ganesha mantra we are bought together into the collective mindfield of our Tradition. That collective heart of hearts in which the Gurus of our living tradition will “speak” when we choose to listen and embrace the Ganesha mantra with full faith, sincerity and humility. Let Go of expectations, fears, and anticipations, and let the Guru-Light of Love shine on your Buddhi as you become still and silent.

You have prepared the soil nicely through the past year’s japa of Ganesha Gayatri. This has been the test for soil well-nurtured, mind well prepared and polished by the ajapa-japa. Your purification has transformed your buddhi through refining your inclinations and redefining your habits in more sattvic ways.

Please Remember and let me remind you:  there is a deeper natural inclination – the inclination for Moksha – far deeper than any instinctual urges, far deeper than any emotional needs and desires is that burning determination of knowing thyself and thereby lighting the lamp of buddhi to reflect the pure Self-Atman. Your meditation IS the very reminder and the very act of lighting the lamp. And thus experience the most natural state of your mind as enlightened, the Samadhi state.

The theme of this sangha, Aapo Deepo Bhava, reminds you to recognize the journey, recognize the goal. Let your japa become your journey and your ajapa-japa become your goal. And thereby recognize that which is ever pure, ever wise, and ever free as the most natural state of your being. Through the grace of God, Guru and Self, you now recognize yourself and the true Self of your pure Being. You have nothing to “do”, nothing to achieve, other than letting go. Just “Let Go”.  Swami Rama reminded us again and again, “All you need to do is let go and re-attach here. Let go of the attachments of this shore and simply reach the other shore.”

And we will use the mantra as a vehicle for this coming year, along with your personal mantras, plus honoring the commitments you have made as the purascharanas of your specialty mantras.

So, as we prepare, bring your mind’s awareness into the meditative state. Prepare the inner eye and look within. Prepare with a pure heart, to empty and thereby to receive from within. And now, return to the source. Follow the spoken word that becomes the thought, the thought that becomes the wave, the wave of that feeling, the immersion of that awareness into the unified consciousness.

Breathing out and breathing in where that life force is measured by the flow of this prana stream. Regulating that flow as the pillar of our personality, a pillar-like stream of light as the central-stream, the sushumna awakens. Let it flow from the very crown of your head to the very base of your spine and the aadhara.  In that sushumna stream, in that flow, the light of wisdom is revealed. Your entire being becomes an ear, becomes an eye, so as to open our hearts and invite, open our minds and embrace that light of grace as our diksha.

The essential Ganesha mantra is given:

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ।

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ।

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ।

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah…

And now: nonverbal speaking with only the tongue with lips sealed;

Now, tongue stilled observing the words in the mind as a mental recitation;

now, that flow of the mind, mantra, prana and breath: inhaling thinking the mantra, exhaling thinking the mantra; inhaling & exhaling, inhaling & exhaling, breathing in and out, maintaining the mantra in the mind along with your breathing.

And now as a wave of memory-like thought flowing, again and again in your mind where the mantra is no long a cognitive thought.

Now, the wave that was a memory, a semblance of cognition, now subsides into presence, the unified field of awareness and remains still and silent. Where each fiber of your body, each strand of your personality, now echoes that vibratory quality of your mantra as unity, harmony, stability, and strength.

Remaining the observer, remaining the witness, returning to the pillar of light and from the crown of the head to the base of the spine, breath, mantra and mind’s awareness flow as that illuminating central stream of the sushumna flow.

Receive guru’s grace as the illuminating quality-prakasha, as the mental state of your mantra.

Slowly make your transition, feeling the gentle movement of your navel region, as you mentally recite –

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः ।

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah

Gently open your eyes, yet the mind remains attuned to Om Gam Ganapataye Namah, as you now pay tribute to the long lineage of sages and resolve in your mind that each mental recitation is a blessing of Lord Ganesha, providing stability and illumination to your buddhi to reveal your true nature, transform your personality and guide you throughout this year of 2023.

Let me simply remind you of our renewed sankalpa that we have taken with the Ganesh Gayatri now absorbed into this essential Ganesh mantra.

Collectively, as the Sangha, we vow towards a pillar like stability and stillness in mind and emotion, perseverance in asana, daily meditation (same time, same place), removal of obstacles in sadhana and in daily life and in relationships, purification of buddhi, resolved on enlightenment, harmony with Mother Earth with a resolute commitment to Ahimsa and non-violence, protection, and security through freedom from all fears and their evolutes. What are the evolutes of fear? They are such dangers as: worries, anxieties, anger, hatred, bitterness, envy, prejudice, revenge, and so forth. We resolve again that this mantra is a spark, an illumination of the spirit which has been gifted to us.

As with all mantras, we begin with the invocation. This invocation was given to us by Swami Veda and can be recited or simply remembered as a way to prepare the mind for japa.

This is the invocation of Mother Divine, as the source of all mantras by way of Nada and Hiranya-garbha.

gāyatrī mātaḥ | he guro | śrī guro |

sad buddhiṁ me prayacca |

cittaṁ me nirmalaṁ śāntaṁ prasannaṁ bhūyāt |

sarve me bhāvāḥ śudhyantām |

maītrī bhāvanayā kṣamāṁ yācituṁ ātma balaṁ me dehi |

om tat-sad brahmārpaṇam astu ||

Mother Gayatri, Oh Gurudeva, Shri Gurudeva

Grant me pure buddhi.

May my mind become immaculate, quiet, peaceful, clear and pleasant.

May all my emotions be purified.

Grant me the spiritual strength to ask for forgiveness with a sentiment of amity.

Om. That (alone is) Real.

May (all this endeavour) be (accepted as my) surrender and offering to Brahman.

For your purascharana, you will complete four malas per day, four hundred recitations per day over period of this year. The mantra is shorter no doubt. So, put this japa into the routines of your daily practice and also give it some extra attention throughout your day. During times when emotional stability is needed, this divine force will help you. As you become familiar with it, the speed, the rhythm and frequency will become more subtle and within 15 minutes you can easily recite your 400 mantras. Remember to make the offering na-maha, not me and not mine. I surrender the fruits of this mantra for the Sangha members, for the sake of humanity’s suffering, for the sake of humanity seeking kindness and compassion. Resolve that through the blessings of this mantra there will be a refinement of buddhi and in your emotions that will be reflected in the transformation of my behaviours and attitudes with my family, friends and with others.

ॐ गं गणपतये नमः

Om Gam Ganapataye Namah,

In service of our Himalayan Lineage,

Swami Ritavan Bharati

Car Driving

You know, I come from Canada. And where I’m from, to drive a car, you have to do a very formal course. It’s a 13-month course. It might be the same in your countries also, but it’s not the same all over the world. So you have 2 parts in your driving course. You have the theory. And you have the practice. So, where I’m from you have 5 sessions of theory for total of 10 hours, where you learn the functioning of car, where is the steering wheel, what is the gas valve, break paddle, the road signs, the rules and regulation, etiquette, etc. You know where the priority is, is not, etc. And then, you have the practice where you actually sit in the car, and practice driving.

Now, in our path, in the path of yoga, in the path of spirituality, it functions a little bit in the same way as learning to drive a car. Yoga, as a system, goes in pair with the system of philosophy that is called sāṁkhya. And don’t worry we will not go in the details sāṁkhya philosophy here. I will not bore you with that today, but they go together. Swami Veda repeated numerous times that you cannot understand the Yoga Sutras if you don’t have a firm ground in the teachings of sāṁkhya philosophy. So sāṁkhya philosophy is the philosophical framework, the theoretical system, as in the theory of driving a car. And yoga is its practical application. Same as when your theory is well understood, you then actually go in the car to practice and learn to drive. So, sāṁkhya, the theory behind the yoga system, that is the darśana śāstra, the theoretical system. And then yoga, the application, is the prayoga śāstra, the practical application of that.

And the purpose of that is to light thy own lamp. But actually, the lamp is already lit. The lamp is there. And Swami Veda would say ‘What do you have to gain from yoga practice, what do you have to gain from yoga?’ And he would say ‘Nothing.’ Because it’s already there. The lamp is already lit. We’re just not aware of it.

Imagine you have put 500 dollars or 500 euros at the bottom of the drawer several years ago. And then, you start cleaning the drawer, and you “discover”, you remove the cover, “discover what was covered”, what was hidden, you discover and you find the 500 euros or 500 dollars. Are you richer than you were before. No, it was already there. So, they say, the great sages and yogis say we are all in samādhi all the time, we are just not aware of it… I’m certainly not aware of it! So, you’re not gaining anything, you remove what’s in between, so you can discover. And that’s the path that we are on. Some people more advanced, other people like me which have more covers, more things to clean out.

Going back to car driving. Swami Veda had a joke. And he was asking the question, what is the difference between the path of haṭha yoga and the path of meditation. Haṭha yoga is like an old 19th century car. How did we, in our previous lives when we were in the 19th century, start the car? With the old cars, you had to go out, and then you cranked it. And you cranked it, and you cranked it until it lights up, until it ignites. You all know that the words ignite and ignition comes from Sanskrit word agni, fire.

So haṭha yoga is an old 19th century car. You have to crank the body, crank the body, crank the body to get it started. Meditation is like a new 21st century car. You don’t go out, you go in. You go in and sit in, and you just turn the ignition key, and it starts. Nowadays even there is no more keys, it’s a button. The purpose is the same. Do you go out? Do you go through the external sheets, external kośas to start, to start to light up the mind. Lighting up the mind means making the mind turn inwards. Or do you just go in and sit and directly press the button. Both have the same purpose.

If you remember Swami Veda’s book Philosophy of Hath Yoga, in the preface Swami ji says “all yoga science is just one.” All these sub-systems like haṭha yoga, laya yoga, mantra yoga etc., they are all part of that big science. And they are there to address different individuals, different sādhakas at different levels of their practice, of their progress. So, haṭha yoga, dhyāna yoga, they have this same purpose to go in, to go to that light. What Ashu ji said yesterday, the point finding the center, or the point is the center. The point cannot be anything else but the center.

There were wonderful questions about mantras, the other day to the panel of initiators, and I remember, it just made me remember a story. I had, and I don’t know why, I don’t know what I did to deserve that, it was probably that I did something good in previous lives, because I cannot recall anything that I have done in this life that made me worth of being so close to Swami Veda. So, it’s probably from the previous lives. And very early on, he took me close to him and I remember. I had been here in the Gurukulam, for I think a week or 10 days, and we had some seniors of the tradition coming to visit here at the ashram and visit Swami Veda. I was passing by as Swami Veda was giving them a tour of the main building. And then, he called me, he was with these very senior Swami Rama disciples and he called me, and introduced me to them, ‘this is Pierre, he’s our most brilliant student.’ And I thought ‘I have been here for a week.’ I think he’s confusing me with somebody else. So, I don’t know what I did to deserve that.

Like Ashu ji talked about spending time with Swami Veda. He was there at the time of Sādhanā Mandir which was very special time as everybody were very close to Swami Veda in his kutia. In the Sādhaka Grama period, we were all envious of the Sādhanā Mandir people who were so close in that little cottage all together. But, as Ashu ji said, we were all at the place where we should be. And we got what we got because that’s what we could get. So, being around Swami Veda was really wonderful. Just to see him, just be around to see how he lived, I learned a lot and I got a lot from the lectures from Swami ji. I got much more, and I’m sure everybody was around him would say the same thing, I got much more from just witnessing his life. And he was the embodiment of that lamp shining on everyone.

If you all go under the one sun on a hot summer day and feel the light and the warmth of the sun. Do you have the feeling that the entire warmth, light and energy of the sun is directed only towards you? When you are under the sun on a hot summer day, you feel that all the power of the sun is directed only towards you. But then, the next person feels the same thing. He also feel that the whole sun is shining only at him.

We felt the same thing with Swami Veda. And I’m sure many people relates. And I’m sure many people who have met Swami Rama in the body will relate to the same. These beings were like the sun. We would feel so special in Swami Veda’s presence. We would always feel that we are the only one in the room, that we are receiving everything, that all his love is directed towards us. But his love was unlimited and his love was not getting less towards us because it was shining towards somebody else as well. We could all received the fullness of the love and care, as well as everybody else. So, they were the source of light, the source of love like the sun.

Yoong ji and I had a little discussion with a few months ago, and Maa Tripurashakti, this morning talked about the same. It was about Swami Veda’s biography and his story with his Guru Swami Rama. He didn’t want anybody to write about him until he would have written about his master. Because he thought that he should not come before his master. And then, he tried to find somebody to help with the writing of the book on his master. But he could not find somebody suitable because all the authors were trying to take Swami Veda as the central part of history with Swami Rama, and Swami Veda didn’t want that. He didn’t want the story to be from the perspective of the person receiving the warmth of the sun. But he wanted his book to be perspective of the sun shining its light.

What is AHYMSIN Sangha?

Last year, we were about to make the final decision whether we weren’t going to have a Sangha gathering in 2022 February. It was a lot of pressure on us to make the decision. But at that time, the whole pandemic and travel restrictions situation were such that we were at one point considering whether we should have a virtual Sangha Gathering by zoom. I’m very happy and relieved that we didn’t take that route. Instead, we decided we want to postpone for one year in 2023 to have the physical Sangha gathering, and here we are, and I can assure you, it is so different.

And for those of you who are watching this at home [the session was live streamed on Facebook and YouTube], sorry you cannot be here, but it’s the next best thing you can do. You can always come back when your time and situation allow.

As we all know, AHYMSIN was envisaged and founded by our beloved Swami Veda as a spiritual family. He emphasized this many times. It is a family not an institution or an organization. So, it is a spiritual family to learn, practice, and spread the teachings of the sages of the Himalayas as interpreted by Gurudeva Swami Rama. It is a lineage, a tradition as Swami Veda summed up beautifully in his guru prayer.

हिरण्यगर्भादारब्धां शेषव्यासादिमध्यमाम्।
स्वामिश्रीरामपादान्तां वन्दे गुरुपरम्पराम्॥

hiraṇyagarbhād-ārabdhāṁ śeṣa-vyāsādi-madhyamām,

svāmiśrīrāma- pādāntāṁ vande guru paramparām.

So, it started in Hiranyagarbha, pass on to Patanjali, Vyasa and the other masters and down to Swami Rama. Therefore, we pay our respect to the guru lineage, guru parampara.

That explains the lineage that we’re holding, I think very, very succinctly and beautifully. And what about the teachings of the sages of the Himalayas? For me personally, I am very, very inspired by Swami Rama’s writing in his book, Living with the Himalayan Masters, in which he said freedom from fear is the first message from the sages. Let us think, freedom from fears. We have a lot of those in the past three years. Fears. And we will continue to have them. So, the first message is freedom from fears, and the second message from the Himalayan stages is to be aware of the reality within. The reality within, guru or mantras, the Lord, for the one who can realize the reality within, there shall be no fear at all. So, that is to me a very, very powerful summary of the teachings that we are pursuing here.

In the Buddhist tradition, we always pay our respect our homage to three jewels, three gems, the three most valuable things which are a Buddha, the teacher, the Dharma, teachings, and the Sangha, the community, the family. So, here in AHYMSIN, we have all three, we have the teachers, the gurus, we have the teachings, the messages from the sages, and we have us all, the community, the Sangha, we are the Sangha. You are the Sangha. I am Sangha. We are all members. So that is what AHYMSIN is all about. And I just very briefly share my thoughts with everyone today. Namaste. Thank you.

Message from Dr. Mohan Swami to Sangha 2023

My fellow Brothers and Sisters

Swamiji conceived and later initiated AHYMSIN between 2005 to 2007, though the seeds may have been sown much earlier. It was officially registered in April 2007 at SRSG.

It was in the wee hours of the morning of Sept 1st 1990 that I was blessed immensely when I prostrated in full (ashtanga dandavat pranayam) at the feet of Gurudev in the compound of Sadhana Mandir in a cold drizzle. The blank yet euphoric and intoxicated feeling of spiritual bliss lasted for weeks till it was time for me to return to the harsh realities of the material world.

Gurudev was in Singapore the following month and I rushed to meet him there. Followed him to Indonesia and Thailand.

A week later we returned to Sadhana Mandir where he introduced me to Dr. Ushaburdh Arya. The love and respect for him were instantaneous and lasts till this moment without an iota of diminution.

Fast forward – from 1991 through to 1996.

On 13th November 1996 Gurudev attained Mahasamadhi, I interacted with Swami Veda Bharathi (SVB) whenever we met or wrote to each other during that period.

The interactions increased manifold after November. SVB was named by Gurudev in his Will as the Spiritual Advisor to HIHT, the mission that spearheaded Gurudev’s grand vision of service to humanity. SVB was also appointed the first Chancellor of the Himalayan University the precursor Institution which transformed to become the Swami Rama Himalayan University.

We met regularly at the ashram in Rishikesh or at HIHT in Swami Rama Nagar or sometimes overseas, be it in Malaysia or Europe.

SVB conceived the idea of Ahymsa for the Americas in 1999. And, he expanded the vision to AHYMSIN between 2005 to 2007 which was a natural by-product of his years of writing, teaching, serving, and possibly the summum bonum of what he destined for himself to leave for his students worldwide. This was to be his contribution, his legacy for his Gurudev‘s mission. And Swami Rama Sadhaka Gramma was born as a sequel, a reason for these initiatives.

There were many challenges that he faced; the land, the construction of the buildings, government approvals, personnel, and large finances. He however rode the tiger without flinching, always stating what Gurudev similarly shared with me during the initial challenging days of commencing HIHT and the Hospital: that “The Mother will provide”.

And She did.

SVB had a gentle and humble predisposition. He was the gentlest of all the renunciate disciples of Gurudev I had come in contact with. And of course, the most intellectually renowned and advanced. He was so learned that many could not comprehend his works nor his writings. They felt that it was for spiritually high achievers. But they were wrong. SVB could, at any moment interact with an infant or a toddler without any doubt.

SVB had total respect and perfect love for Gurudev. This was clearly visible to all. In his own Will, he wrote that none of his photographs should be exhibited. Only that of his Guru.

Another side of SVB that I could not understand was his love for eating sweet dishes, be it Indian or the durian cakes from Malaysia that he relished (and requested for whenever I came to visit him). He sidestepped my chiding with, “the sugar is under control. Don’t worry”. He would be the most gracious host, arranging for a sumptuous meal after our one-to-one meetings. I very much envied SVB for the various roles he assumed with such great ease.

When he requested me to accept the position of President when AHYMSIN was to be launched, and also to be in DMT, I was reluctant as I already had too much on my plate. SVB convinced me of the importance of his action. It was to enable the ties and relationship with Gurudev’s greater mission to be fostered and secured. Brother Dave Hume did a marvelous job as the V.P. and shouldered the entire burden during the duration of his tenure. My heartfelt gratitude to him. And to his equally dedicated wife Sister Carolyn Hume. And to all the Executive Committee members of the many years. Brother Idriss Raoua and AHYMSIN and DMT Secretary Sadhana Mishra too were a great source of inspiration along with many others. The list is so very long.

My good friend Shi Hong for whom SVB had much confidence and love accepted the mantle of Deputy President after Dave Hume and similarly took it upon himself to cover the post of President. This provided me the flexibility of continuing to pay attention to the other duties and work that was given to me as instructed by Gurudev. I am indebted to Shi Hong like I am to Dave Hume for their understanding and for giving me the freedom of time.

We have come a long way. The period between late 2019 and 2022 was that of uncertainty. SRSG faced a serious crunch due to the Covid pandemic but many of the AHYMSIN members and centers either individually or collectively showed their kindness and compassion in more than many ways to ensure that the HQ functioned without any interruption. Based on any nature of crisis that could arise again, my request to the incoming President and his team is to create a reasonably sized corpus fund that will ensure a sense of surety/guarantee and financial security. This will enable AHYMSIN to position itself with a steady long-term vision and enable its leadership to strategize and strengthen the organization and carefully prepare for succession planning.

For all these to take place smoothly, DMT must take more ownership and work closely with AHYMSIN. Though the current relationship pattern may appear to be adequately structured, there must be a ‘dotted’ line between the two i.e., DMT and AHYMSIN to ensure a reasonable sense of inter-alia and accountability. It is therefore vital that this bond must be intensified every which way.

On a personal note, I had requested leave of absence from my positions in SRHU, HIHT, AHYMSIN and DMT in Nov 2016 to embark on a more intense spiritual journey to the mountains as part of my sadhana and tapasya. I had discussed this with Swami Ritavan Bharati (SRB) and he was full of encouragement and support. SRB requires the full support of DMT and AHYMSIN to grow and further strengthen SRSG.

Now back to the future.

There was a disruption in my plans to be in solitude much longer in the mountains due to many factors and principally because of the pandemic between 2019 and last year.

In late October last year, Covid finally got me in despite the Pfizer boosters. For nearly eleven weeks until late January this year, it exacerbated my gluten allergy and played havoc on the frail body including mimicking angina attacks, coeliac disease, and lumbar-sacral pain.

Allopathy did not help much but Ayurvedic medications did the trick along with very generous portions of Gurudev’s kripa. There is no ‘one rule’ for all but for me perhaps there was an ‘all for one’ rule. I am out of the woods now and sooner than later intend to pursue where I left off four years ago to be in the Himalayas where my heart and soul belong.

So, my Brothers and Sisters it is time to bid adieu.

I thank each one of you and I thank all of you. For what you are doing in any form or manner to keep the Tradition ongoing. Even your daily meditation at the same time in a disciplined and diligent way or learning the Himalayan teachings as taught by Swami Rama wherever you are is a sure way of expressing your love. Your love for the Guru should be immense and unconditional. Practice abhyasa and vairagya.

We have been instructed by our Master to surrender ourselves selflessly, to serve others, and to help others without expecting the fruits of the labor.

Let us, therefore, surrender ourselves to the Tradition and to the Lineage; and thank them for making us what we are in this life. And to pray to them to lead us in the path of Light.

MAY ALL OF YOU STAY BLESSED
