Tamaso-ma-jyotir-gamaya: Jyoti Meditation

Editor’s Note:

October marked the inaugural opening of Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama for all our family members from around the globe. Swami Ritavan Bharati, our Ashram Pramukha and Spiritual Guide, used this occasion, following the pandemic years, to gather an international audience with the theme of Yoga Nidra.  The weeklong retreat offered many themes and practicums on Yoga Nidra along with special meditations guided by Swami Ritavan.

This meditation was adapted from the archive of meditations by Swami Veda Bharati. The practice below is shared to offer the initiates of the Tradition a glimpse into the vast collection of special meditations guided by Swami Veda. If you would like to incorporate this meditation within your daily practice, you are requested to kindly reach out to your mantra initiator and/or the AHYMSIN Spiritual Committee for personal guidance.

Swami Ritavan also shared an audio recording of a guided meditation on “Om-jyoti”, which can be heard here:

OM; Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya…Lead me from darkness to light, lead me from darkness of ignorance to the to enlightenment! Let this become a prayer encompassing your entire heart and mind; an affirmation: jyotiraham, jyotiraham, jyotiraham. I am light, I am light, I am light!

Tamso-ma-jyotir-gamaya

Sit in your meditation posture. Your spine is the central mountain of the Universe. The central pole of the universe. The point from where you and the universe begin and end. Fix your spine – steady, motionless, erect. Bring your awareness to the asana, the seat you’re sitting on. Worshipfully surrender this seat and offer it to guru parampara, to guru lineage – may they come and meditate on this seat.

Your body, a temple of God, constructed of configurations of light. Know it to be thus. Learn to worship in this temple that is made of light – the divine light of divine Consciousness, the emanation of your Atman, your spiritual Self.

Let all your muscles & joints, your neuromuscular system relax so that no tension is blocking the free flow of light.

Established the breath from the seat of prana, at the navel center, with deep diaphragmatic breathing.

Your breath Deepening and Expanding flowing gently, smoothly, unhindered through the entire body.

The whole body breathing from the crown to the adhara and asana, this seat, and from your adhara to the crown, through this entire body.

This space, your body occupies, becoming a configuration of light.

Your breath awareness flowing through this illumined space.

Where now, within that illumined space, a resonance begins silently resounding with Om Jyotihi, Om Jyotihi, Om Jyotihi,

The sound, breath, light, filling this sacred chamber of your being.

‘Om Jyotihi, that Light’, this entire chamber as light and resonance, a single presence of illumination-Jyoti as mantra and breath flowing as one……. keeping to this dharana, moment to moment.

Now, gather this awareness of Jyoti as light and resonance into your field of prana life-force in the nabhi [navel centre], your Manipura chakra.

Within this navel center of consciousness, observe this awakened illumination as mantra-filled breath, breathing through the naval center.

And, now from the navel center to the nasagra [the point where the base of the nose bridge meets the upper lip] and upward to the center between the eyebrows.

This beam of light as mantra and breath flowing from the nabhi chakra, the navel centre to the Ajna centre [eyebrows centre] and back again.

The flow as a beam of light & soundless mantra, the jyoti-mantra ascending and descending as a streak of lightning between the nabhi chakra [navel centre] & the Ajna chakra [eyebrows centre] without a break.

No longer a body with limbs and organs, your consciousness resting in pure awareness, as the flow of this celestial and divine stream. Continue with ajapa-japa [effortless remembrance of the mantra]: OM JYOTI, OM JYOTI, OM JYOTI.

Let this kriya be easy and natural, maintaining the dharana for as long as one may.

May the guru parampara continue to bless you.

Illuminating Freedom

(Contemplations over this past month of Rishi-purnima, celebrating Swami Veda’s contributions to humanity here at the abode of Gurudev, Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama)

Learn to unconfuse your mind and illuminate the darkness of bondage.  Learn to unconfuse your mind with the identity that never changes. The nature of realization, the nature of purity is everything of its surroundings reflect in it without making it impure. Yet, we allow anything and everything to reflect in our purity with ever-changing thoughts and emotions as habit patterns, as our identity. The ever-changing, the impure, our false bondage becomes our identity crisis.

Recognize yourself as the spark of universal life-force, of the immaculate purity of universal spirit intent on enlightenment. Such an intention is samadhi as revealed by our Rishis. Meditation is the experience of our own true nature, that you are a spiritual being – Tat Twam Asi – That Thou Art.

The nature of purity is that it reflects every “thing” so that the temporal, and the impure are only an assumption of purity and not part of its true nature. This paradox of purity is that you, the pure being, need a reminder that you are pure. These “things” reflecting in you are not your true nature. These create our habit patterns and the bondage of ignorance. All reflections, in the mirror of consciousness, have only one goal and one purpose, to re-cognize your true self. All desires and attachments are relationships that can lead to the recognition of the essence of light and love.

Yet, the essence is forgotten. What is this assumption of darkness, of weakness, of impurity when tied by the rope of delusion? Re-cognize your pure self, and recognize this self-luminosity of your spiritual nature. Be Still; BE. You, the consciousness-force, whose very nature is freedom – Ever Wise, Ever Pure, and Ever Free.

In this moment, enter your essence, rest in the being you are.
Exhale and release the false assumptions of identities that bind the Self.
Be Free and rest your awareness in the self-luminosity of your Self.

Shivoham, ShivoHam, SHIVOHAM

With love and blessings of the Lineage,

Special Message from Swami Ritavan Bharati

Special Message from Swami Ritavan Bharati, for the newly initiated Swami, and as a message of moksha for all who aspire

Sitting in the fire of knowledge, each offering, no more mine- svaha…

Those having purified themselves through the yoga of renunciation, having completed and surrendered the fruits of their duties seek refuge in the guru, the indweller, guardian, and bestower of deliverance. Through renunciation of attachments of the three worlds, one emerges from the Ganges to live life to relieve the suffering of humanity. Having washed the doubts and fears of the worldly cycle, the renunciate receives reassurance through the Lineage in reciting their vows as the guru unties the knots and unites the soul to the parampara with a new name and yogapatta.

Swami Ameyaananda Bharati receives her assignment to the Bharati Monastic order and the seat of the great Lineage from Hiranya-garbha through Adi Shankara to our Gurudeva, and through Swami Veda. With the mahavakya now planted as a seed in the disciple’s mind, the sannyasin wears the robes of the color of the rising sun. With the command be a light unto thyself, bring peace of morning as the light of dawn, and comfort in the illuminating message from a pure heart.

As a sannyasin, one has no abode, no possessions, no relatives. Nothing is theirs but to live for the service of Om, and for the benefit of others. The fullness of the moment is their contentment. Life without dependence, allowing others to come seeking refuge with them. All the living beings of the earth are their relatives. God is their protector, and Om is one, oneself, and no other. Peace and only peace is now the life of a sannyasin. Om Shanti-Shanti-Shanti. Om

Editor’s Note

The birth of Swami Ameyaananda Bharati scaledSwami Ameyaananda Bharati, previously known as Chanchala Diggavi in her Purvaashram life, received sanyasa-diksha (renunciation) in the Bharati lineage on the auspicious day of July 21, 2022, under the guidance of Swami Ritavan Bharati, our Ashram Pramukha and Spiritual Perceptor.

Chanchala Diggavi has been visiting Sadhana Mandir and Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama since 2000 and has been associated with the Himalayan Tradition for longer than that.

Having born in a traditional Brahmin family in South India, her maternal family had a great influence on her. Three members of her maternal family over three generations had received sanyasa, including her maternal grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather. Her paternal family had built and maintained a temple in their hometown for over 200 years, which continues to exist even now.

During her grihasta (householder) life, she raised three children and her spiritual path steadied after her husband’s passing in 1990.

Between 2000-2008, she had received multiple initiations and personal guidance into various practices of Yoga, Vedanta, and Tantra from Swami Veda Bharati. She completed a 90-days intensive silence practice with yajna (fire offerings) at SRSG, under Swamiji’s guidance. Later, Swamiji asked her to start sharing the teachings and practices of Sri Vidya.

She has taught Sanskrit and several ancient scriptures in the past, and now spends most of her time in silence and personal sadhana at SRSG.

I Bow to the Truth-Bearing Guru

Guru Gita – Song of Guru, Verse: 89.

I bow to the Truth-bearing guru, who is the bliss of Brahman; who bestows the highest joy; who is infinite, free of the bonds of the 36 tattvas; who is One, the embodiment of Wisdom, Pure, and Eternal; and who exemplifies the great Vedantic proclamations, such as ‘That Thou art;’ the witness beyond all duality.

With bowed head, joined palms before my heart, a Reverent Salutation to Guru – “the Ocean of Mercy”

With initiates gathered in celebrating Guru Purnima and our beloved Swami Veda’s Mahasamadhi commemorations at SRSG here and around the world, we pause to acknowledge Guru’s blessing. Guru has made a very loving world and has invited his children from across the globe to embrace this Guru-family, as his gift of love.

The Song of Guru, Guru Gita, the nectar-filled words on the Guru, Master, Saviour, whose revelation fulfils the goal of life in liberation.

The mystery of Guru is the sacred boon of initiation.
The joy of Guru is mind’s beauty in samadhi.
The love of Guru is knowledge revealing Truth.
The language of Guru is mantra and yantra.
The gift of Guru is the pure pearl-bindu.
The pilgrimage of Guru is nada pulsing the 61-shrines within.
The transmission of Guru – light that dispels the darkness.
The Guru is Self and the self is Guru.

Remember the lotus feet of Guru, entering the boat that is also Guru to cross the ocean of worldly life.
Serve Guru in all thought, speech, and actions.
Surrender to Guru and put an end to rebirth.
Meditate and listen to the mantra given by Guru.
Meditate and embrace the imperishable form of Guru.

A Sanyasin is:
A child of Mother-Father Guru, serving Guru in thought, word, deed.
A child whose identity is nameless and formless Guru.
A reclining child asleep whose dreams are Guru’s sweet words.
A playful child whose possessions are Guru’s toys of mercy.
A hungry child whose cries for the milk of immortality in Guru’s breasts.
A tottering child whose pillar of stability is Guru.
A crawling child attracted to the truth-revealing light of Guru.
A muttering child repeating the same name of Guru again and again.
A crying child extending arms to infinity to receive Guru’s solace.

May our meditations acknowledge this eternal and ever-present bond of unity for the yearning hearts of humanity. May love, as an expression of Guru’s Grace be a reminder to keep that “smiling-mind” throughout life, “smera, smera, stimita.”

with joy and blessings,

Tasmai Shri Gurave Namah,

srb

International Yoga Day Tribute – 2022

Tribute on the Special Occasion of the International Yoga Day – 2022

I pay homage to the Masters and the Saints, all gurus of the Yoga Tradition. Really, we can only pay homage to the Masters by walking on their footsteps; and not only honoring them but learning to do with our mind what they did with their mind. I have a wish for you – that you become someone that anyone who comes in your presence, any time, feels that he has entered a realm of peace. To have that ambition is yoga.

Yoga unites everybody in silence and meditation. Yoga is a tradition of discovering the inner serene silence. Yoga is not a system of physical movement. It is a system of silence and stillness from which the movement expresses itself. It is the subtle yoga, not the yoga of the body but the yoga of the inner self.

Now enter into the chamber of inner silence and discover your spine as you sit straight sensing the subtle flow of breath awareness as an energy in your spine. Your senses will naturally want to close; with your closed eyes look inward into a chamber of silence. Then, as you enter that chamber, you rest fully in being, that what you really are. You are not your eyes, ears, hands, and feet. You are not your breath, your emotions, your disturbances. You are a serene form of conscious energy that is total and pure knowledge and absolute joy. Samadhi is returning to that Self-nature. Once you have RE-discovered that Self-nature, you will never lose it again.

Resolve and carry the intention in your mind to calm the mind in this way many, many times during the day. This is only the first step, but even with this step, you will join the great disciples who for thousands of years have sat at the feet of the masters and the immortals. This Himalayan yoga is not the yoga for powers; it is the yoga for purity and serenity.

Please make a resolve that you will calm your mind by following the harmony of mind. With one single thought and with breath awareness, for however many minutes, it will keep you in this enjoying your own inner peace. I pray that someday you will sit in silent meditation, the yoga that transcends all boundaries and identities.

Om Tat Sat;
Shanti, Shanti Shanti

(In remembrance of our beloved Swami Veda Bharati, these words echo his intentions and guidance for all of us.)

Om,

A loving invite for the Swami Rama Dhyana Gurukulam

Few seek, and the fewer find.  The burden of Truth once found is heavy and teachers seek the seekers to whom to give.  When, dear seeker, you sit in your daily meditation, the blessings of all the great Himalayan masters are with you even if you do not know it.” Swami Rama

We are pleased to announce the starting of “Swami Rama Dhyana Gurukulam”, which will not only convey the message of great Rishis but will also pave the way to realize the truths of life.

Today, confined and defined by worldly achievements, and material development there is fear and much instability. Thus, there is a renewed search to understand the purpose of life. Now is the time to make mindful efforts to help such seekers so that peace, mutual understanding, spiritual awakening and knowledge may dawn upon this troubled planet of ours.

With the Grace of Gurudeva Swami Rama and Swami Veda Bharati, under the auspices of “Swami Rama Dhyana Gurukulam,” our sankalpa (resolve) endures and extends the ancient heritage of our founders: “May all people of this living planet follow the path of Truth and universal love. May they live with a purpose in life sincerely practicing through compassion and understanding.”

Such a goal in life teaches us not to be swayed by attachment to things of the world, nor caught in this web of ignorance. Use your Gurukulam intensive studies and practices to refine and clear your mind to guide your thoughts, and use your kind thoughts to guide your speech and actions. Your very life will be transformed through ahimsa; and by santosha (contentment) you will live in harmony with all situations of life. To you, dear seekers on the path of this inward journey come join us, and may you receive the blessings of the Himalayan Lineage.

Love and Prayers amidst Conflict

May our peace filled hearts extend with prayer to all those suffering during these stressful times in displacement and injury within Ukraine. Let our sankalpa for our Ganesha Gayatri japa be repeated before each meditation that the fruits of such actions be offered for “Harmony with Mother Earth and all Her sentient beings with a resolute commitment to ahimsa in all forms.”

On behalf of the Sangha our loving appreciation to all to those involved through the Tradition’s Budapest Centre, who are working together at this time to provide all the necessary love, support and shelter for displaced families for the past 3 weeks.

Please read below the message shared by our Hungarian family about the relief efforts carried out by their volunteers:

On the afternoon of 3 March, we received a call that some young people from India, who were fleeing the war in Ukraine, needed our help. That evening, the twenty frightened-eyed Indian students of medicine arrived at the Himalayan Tradition’s Budapest centre.

Allow us to quote from the words of one of our dear fellow practitioners, Agnes, who, among other things, welcomed them that evening:

“They are slowly starting to talk, I wish they wouldn’t. It took them five minutes to get out of the metro and the bombs came, three of their companions died right  there, and they don’t know anything else. The people of Kharkov were told to flee three hours before the attack, but they are coloured people, nobody really cared about them. They had enough time to take their passports with them, they say in perfect English. They are 24 years old, but they already know everything about life and now ….death, and this knowledge is evident in their every mature movement as they make themselves a bed from the mattresses and blankets in our Himalayan yoga studio.”

We now know with absolute certainty that all 20 young people have successfully arrived in their Indian homes, so it is with great pleasure that we write these words to you: their situation is now resolved!
But there are many others who, unfortunately, are not in such a blessed situation.

Hungary, as a neighboring country, has a special role to play in the care and shelter of refugees, and has experienced the second largest refugee influx to date. Since the beginning of the crisis, over 300,000 refugees have crossed the Hungarian-Ukrainian border, and this number is expected to rise further in the coming weeks as fighting nears Kiev (the capital).

In light of this sad fact, we have decided to provide shelter for those in need at the Himalayan Yoga and Meditation Association’s Budapest centre for the weeks of crisis.

A very well organised team of volunteers -all practitioners of our Tradition- will take care of the asylum seekers who come to us.

The Ukrainian families that arrive are mainly women and children who have been forced to leave the male members of the family at home. In addition to accommodation, we provide warm meals and good words to the first arrivals, and we have equipped the room with games, art materials and activities for the children to help them forget the difficulties of fleeing.

We would like to thank everyone for your caring love and support at this time; we are very grateful.

2022: The Year of Mantra

By way of the blessings of the Lineage, we are introducing 2022 to be the Year of Mantra.

The entire title for the Observance this year is: 2022, the Year of Mantra: Language of Soul, Mind, and Word.

Recently, the Ganesha Gayatri mantra was received and instilled as a Sangha initiation with a one-year observance for 2022. The sankalpa, the mantra, and its pronunciation along with the introductory purification prayer are all explained in our previous newsletter and can be read here – https://ahymsin.org/ganesha-gayatri-mantra-2022-new-ahymsin-sangha-practice/

This special mantra practice along with your daily meditation practice will be complemented by this Svadhyaya (self-study) practice that is being introduced for the Sangha members. The book we will use is “Mantra and Meditation1 by our dear Swami Veda. Since it was published many years ago, you would already have it in your personal library, or are using a translated version in your language.

Each month you will have a theme or chapter to read, study and contemplate. Then you will test the principles in your meditation and apply them in your daily life.

Your homework for this coming month is:

After reading the forward and introduction read, study and contemplate upon the chapter 7 “Subtle origins of Sound”. Test these in your meditation, and then submit a sentence or two of your experiences and insights to me (SwamiRitavanBharati@gmail.com). Remember, if it is still a question, then you must test it, contemplate upon it, and resolve it until it becomes an insight for you.

Mantra and Meditation

Introducing our theme:

In the multitude of spoken words, in numerous Mother-tongues over millions of years, the source of language is traced to its origin in pure love.

Love is the language of the soul, and knowledge is the language of the mind.

Love that bursts forth the energy of light transforming pure knowledge into the thought becomes spoken words. The articulated speech, given meaning when heard, is limited in conveying understanding of the intention, and much more. When examination and judgement of the spoken word rests in an assignment of meaning to “words”, one is unable to grasp the language of the soul.

Throughout this year, our AHYMSIN Sangha will devote energies to studies and practices that awaken the light of love through experiences of meditation and meditation in action.

Each month our Full Moon Illuminations newsletter will share observations and insights from members across the globe.

Where does language come from?

Swami Veda, in his book – “Mantra and Meditation” explained a verse from the Shiksha of Panini, a 7th century B.C grammarian; and further interpreted it in the writings of Bhartṛhari in his Vakyapadiya:

atma buddhya sametyarthan mano yunkte viwksaya

manah kayagnimahanti  sa  prerayati marutam

marutas turasi caran mandram janyati svaram

“Atma, bringing together its purpose (intent) with the help of buddhi, gives a command to the mind by producing a desire (intent) to speak. The buddhi instills the desire (intention) to speak in the mind. The mind awakens the fire in the body from the navel center. That agni impels the prana and air. The air moves through the lungs and through the vocal cords, comes into the mouth and becomes a sound [that is articulated].” (pg.90-91, Mantra and Meditation)

Sankalpa and Intention for the Ganesha Gayatri Japa as the collective Sangha mantra for 2022

Collectively, as the Sangha, we vow towards a pillar like stability and stillness in mind and emotion, perseverance in asana, daily meditation (same time, same place), removal of obstacles and sadhana and in daily life and in relationships, purification of buddhi, resolved on enlightenment, harmony with Mother Earth with a resolute commitment to Ahimsa and non-violence (Mother Earth has suffered enough and we can play our part, even more so now), protection and security through freedom from all fears. Everyone is seeking security from the unknown, from the complex, from the animosities, the greed, the hatred. That protection, that security is necessary for us to feel grounded and stable, to be able to move into our higher realms of life, with relationships and our service to humanity.

Q & A on Mantra Japa

Question: If I am experienced in japa and have a standard and consistent daily practice, and I usually complete 4 malas in 40 minutes; can I count the amount of my japa to be the same when I do not use the mala beads?

Answer by Swami Ritavan Bharati: The mental level of speech or madhyama stage of japa has multiple levels. When an experienced meditator becomes adept at identifying those levels within the ekagra (one-pointed) state of mind, they will experience a rhythm and frequency of the japa that can be tested and measured. Using the mala, you remember the mantra 108 times with each bead, maintaining the same level of experience for the same duration of time.

For example, in your meditation, you can observe your japa on three different levels2:

  1. You do a mala with the breath. Exhale the mantra, inhale the mantra, and watch how long that takes.
  2. Then you do a mala with the ordinary repetition that you do; many people do it somewhere between the articulated word and its thought in the mind.
  3. Then you do the mala at a deeper level, where mantra is like a heartbeat, the mantra arising deep in the mind like a pulse beat.

Work out how long it takes you to do the mala at those three levels over a long period of time. The experienced meditator is then adept at noting the level of japa in the mind and knowing the amount of japa within that period of time.

Try to be consistent with the same length of meditation and the same level of concentration during that period to gage your count of japa. Test yourself again, especially during moments of emotional ups and downs. When this is tested repeatedly as consistent, then you can infer the same number of japa even when not using the mala beads.

Ganesha Gayatri Mantra – 2022 New AHYMSIN Sangha Practice

ॐ अखण्डमण्डलाकारं व्याप्तं येन चराचरम्।

तत्पदं दर्शितं येन तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥

Om akhaṇḍa-maṇḍalākāraṁ vyāptaṁ yena carācaram,

Tat-padaṁ darśitaṁ yena tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ.

हिरण्यगर्भादारब्धां शेषव्यासादिमध्यमाम्।

स्वामिश्रीरामपादान्तां वन्दे गुरुपरम्पराम्॥

Hiraṇya-garbhād ārabdhāṁ śeṣa-vyāsādi-madhyamām,

Svāmi-śrī-rāma-pādāntāṁ vande guru-paramparām.

ॐ शान्तिः शान्तिः शान्तिः ॥

Om Shanti! Shanti! Shanti!

ॐ  Om

By way of Mother Divine’s Grace and Guru’s blessings, we are gathered tonight as well as with many of our Sangha members from around the world. So, we are gathered for a purpose tonight. A purpose that is actually a moment of transition. For as we gathered yesterday, and had our Purnahuti for our Saumya-Tara mantra. Once again, bring that beautiful ‘Saumya’ essence back to our minds, that has been imbued with thousands and thousands of japa over this three-year period.

सौम्या सौम्यतराशेष सौम्येभ्यस्त्वतिसुन्दरी ।

परापराणां परमा त्वमेव परमेश्वरी ॥

तारे तुत्तारे तुरे स्वाहा ॥

Saumyā saumyatarāśeṣa saumyebhyas tvati sundari.

Parāparāṇāṁ paramā tvameva parameśvarī.

Tāre tut tāre ture svāhā.

And in that sentiment of Svaha, a surrender of giving, of giving of our entire ego and personality by way of a purification so that that purification of mind reveals the essence of our nature, the beauty of our being.

Three years of practice, a groove has been created in our collective mind-field, in our minds for such a prayer, such a practice that has given both the feeling of mother in our lives and the purpose of living for her love and in that way, sharing that same love of Mother Divine with others.

There was a question asked of me, and it gave me pause to think about… “Oh, you did a peace mantra. But there’s no peace in the world. It’s even more disruptive. Three years, what has the world become? This problem, that problem; the next day another problem; more conflict, more adversity; what is the purpose of such mantras?” To that, I simply reflect back on our beloved Swami Veda who wanted to make an emphasis of what is right with the world.

Yes, we can look at what is negative, what is a problem, what is the conflict, but if we look at what is beautiful, what is harmonious, what is beneficial, what is the quotient of happiness. That is also something to measure. We find that yes, there is much beauty, much wisdom in the world and in that way much love. So let us take a grander view of mantras. Mantras are those vibratory qualities that are not just simply words spoken.

So, we are once again here to bring about the birth of our Sangha mantra and it has been a continuation for over two decades now that every two-three years, Swami Veda would introduce a mantra for our collective family. Here at Swami Rama Sadhaka Grama, every morning we do the Havana with that Sangha mantra and throughout the globe, whether you’re sitting in your home or together with the members of your centre, this Sangha mantra is present.

So once again, we’re bringing back the birth of a new mantra, by way of that same process of initiation, where mind interacts with mind. Mind speaks to mind, heart to heart, soul to soul, in that meditative state, that which is revealed has become the new mantra for us.

So, from our Saumya-Tara mantra, we will now practice, we will now ask for the opportunity to have Ganesha’s presence.

Our new AHYMSIN Sangha Mantra will be the Ganesha Gayatri Mantra.

ॐ तत्-पुरुषाय विद्महे

वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि ।

तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात्॥

Om tat-puruṣāya vidmahe

Vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi ।

Tanno dantī pracodayāt ॥

Swami Veda has beautifully explained this mantra –

This Mantra is the mantra of stability and of removing the obstacles from someone’s path. If one is planning to do a long undertaking, a long observance of a mantra like Gayatri, sometimes one is faced with karmic obstacles. This mantra will prepare your karmic field so that some of those obstacles coming in the way of your spiritual progress will not hinder you excessively.  It is the mantra of the Ganesha; type of mantra known as Gayatri, not the regular gayatri that you know, but a specialized Gayatri. There are many hundreds of these kinds of Gayatris.

This is Ganesha Gayatri. Now Ganesha is the divine force as it operates in the Muladhara chakra to stabilise, not only to make one sit in a stable way but also to have stability in life. The exact translation of the mantra does not matter because behind each word, there is a mystery and behind that, there is another mystery. For example, the figure of Ganesha is quite a little bit like the figure of the way we right the sound of ‘Om’.

In this [mantra] the figure is mentioned as having a curved trunk like that of an Elephant. This actually refers to the little piece that sticks out of the sound of ‘Om’, when the word ‘Om’ is written.

Tat-puruāya vidmahe (we seek to know that supreme divine person)

Vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi (we meditate upon the one with a curved trunk, remember the curved trunk represents the base of consciousness as seen in the writing of the letter ‘Om’)

Tanno dantī pracodayāt (may that one who has one tooth, that one tooth of Ganesha on one side of the Elephant like trunk represents the principle whereby dualities are merged into oneness. May that one, the one with the one tooth – Pracodayāt – inspire us).”

Lord Ganesha scaled

Lord Ganesha, who is the remover of all obstacles in our life, in our sadhana. He provides physical and emotional stability that we all aspire for by removing the obstacles, the resistances, the conflicts of our spiritual life, of our relationships.

Lord Ganesha represents firm determination. Whenever our mind is resolute, it is also fearless. And then, all our obstacles are automatically overcome.

Ganesha the lord of the ‘Adhara’. You’ve heard Swamiji speak so much about that firmness of that seated pose. He would say that he would just sit and it would be like he was a rock, earth upon earth. In fact, we even have his words to share with you tonight.

Swami Veda Bharati says:

“Ganesha is a deity of the Muladhara chakra. “Mula” means root, “Adhara” means base, substratum. If you see the pictures of various chakras in the Kundalini books, you will see a little Ganesha drawn in the Muladhara because bottom heavy. There is a word in yoga called “asana-siddhi”. Asana-siddhi means accomplishing an asana, meaning you can stay in an asana, let us say your meditation asana, unmoving for as long as you wish without feeling disturbance and without feeling discomfort. As I’ve been telling you, I can sit for five hours in the same position lecture and it is through the grace of Ganesha.

There was some particular sadhana my master gave me at one time, fire offerings to a particular Ganesha Gayatri and after that – steady, that is one part. The other part it is not easily visible. It’s anthropomorphic representation of “Om” and the trunk curls this way, that way, and that laddoo (that round sweet) that is the bindu (the point of concentration). The representation of “Om” in the Tamil script, you know there’s so many scripts in India. In Tamil script, the representation of Om is much closer even to the figure of Ganesha.

It’s always a multi-layered thing, nothing is unilateral. So, it can it can be a yantra, it can be a mantra, it can be in iconographic form, anthropomorphic form, zoomorphic form, and they are all superimposed one upon the other, just like your brain has a limbic system and a cortical system and has the figures and the mantra and the thought all in unitary address in different parts of your, your being and should not be taken just as one as it is seen. But for me, it is just the six layers.

You know the story of Mahabharata? After the war and so on, Sage Vyasa (the father of Shukadeva) he wanted to dictate his book. So, he put an ad in the galactic times. It described – ‘to take the dictation of a nonstop Epic’. Ganesha is also in India God of script. So, Ganesha applied, who else but Ganesha.

If you go to the Badrinath temple, up in the mountains, at the border with the China, which is now closed for the winter, to the Mana village, there’s a cave of Vyasa and a cave of Ganesha. Ganesha said “Okay, I would like to take the job, on one condition.” “What?” “Well, you know, I’m Ganesha. I am the master of Asana. Once I say sit down, I sit down. So, if you are dictating, if you stop, I quit. If you make a stop anywhere, I quit.” He says, “Okay, agreed?”

Vyasa says, “Okay, I have one condition too. Whatever I’m dictating, you must understand before writing it down.” He says, “Alright. Set. Ready.” So, every now and then, Vyasa’s composition, in composing instantly a hundred thousand verses, without stopping. You know, it’s even for Vyasa, it’s a little hard, you know. So, every now and then, he is dictating. He throws, when he feels that he might stumble and he might have to stop, he’s not sure. So, he creates a verse which is very difficult to understand. These are known as “Kuta shlokas”, cryptic, cryptic, shlokas, cryptic verses. So he throws in one or two cryptic verses, this ishe says, “Wait, I have to understand it.” While Ganesha is busy understanding, he is composing in his mind. Tricky, tricky fellow.”

Lord Ganesha, Lord of the Adhara, this seat, this stability, this firmness of conviction. When I sit for my meditation, mind you are with me. Mind, why are you over there, over here? Here today gone tomorrow? Mind, listen to my direction and with that firmness, the buddhi is purified, its ability to decide, to make the judgment – “Is this the correct thought, appropriate thought, necessary thought at this time?” “No?” Okay, then leave. That buddhi is Ganesha.

When we begin any kind of quest, or journey, or take on any kind of vow, a marriage, bringing a child into the world, during such decisions, we ask for Lord Ganesha to be there with us to make that firmness of that decision, of that sankalpa, of that intention to be pure, and thereby to bless us. He is the destroyer of obstacles and gives the way in which one can begin major endeavours. He grants wisdom and skill, the two qualities needed for any endeavour to succeed.

Let us once again understand the purpose of the new mantra – the “Ganesha Gayatri Mantra”. Our purpose, our sankalpa – you take a resolve with that intention and these are the intentions that I will provide for the Sangha, but each of you will have your own personal intention then that you’ll establish for your practice.

The new mantra will be the Ganesha Gayatri mantra for the next one year, until the Mahashivaratri next year in 2023.

Now this mantra like all the Gayatri mantras has the three segments of eight syllables each to have a total of 24 syllables. And, there are many Gayatris, as Swami Veda has said before. Of course, we have our famous one –

ॐ भूर्भुवः स्वः तत्सवितुर्वरेण्यं भर्गो देवस्य धीमहि धियो यो नः प्रचोदयात् ॥

oṃ bhūr bhuvaḥ svaḥ tat savitur vareṇyaṃ bhargo devasya dhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ prachodayāt.

Yet with this Ganesh Gayatri mantra, we have a specific purpose and a specific emphasis.

ॐ तत्-पुरुषाय विद्महे

वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि ।

तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात्॥

om tat-puruṣāya vidmahe

vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi ।

tanno dantī pracodayāt ॥

In the clarity of your own mind, you will accept the blessing of this special mantra, and set the determination of its presence in your life. Again, one of the ways is through Japa. Which mala to use for the Ganesha Gayatri mantra? You can use the Rudraksha mala. Whether you do the 108 beads, seeds as recitations or how may malas you will decide to do. If you do about 4 malas per day, then you will complete the purash-charana in one year. This undertaking will be for one year, until the Mahashivaratri of next year.

Or, whether you are simply able to do the one mala a day. You will then do a mala of the Ganesha Gayatri mantra every day. If you are saying, “Oh Swamiji, I just can’t do this long mantra. This is just too hard for me.” Swami Veda would also say, “Simplify. But be ambitious.” So, search in your hearts for that ability, that inner strength, to be ambitious. And, with that sankalpa, with that intention, set a commitment. Accordingly, set a time and place, and begin.

Let us explore the transformative effect of the Ganesha Gayatri mantra on all our relationships through japa, through self-observation, reflection, and through your spiritual diaries that we may keep, that also give us that mirror to look at ourself.

Now, it is important that you begin with a certain attitude. Many times, we rush to our meditation seat, “oh, I have to go somewhere. I have to rush to get somewhere. Let me at least sit for 5 minutes.” Where is your mind? Before beginning, there is a small prayer, either the pure intention of it, or you can read it in Sanskrit or translate in your mother-tongue.

Our beloved Swami Veda had composed a prayer for those who aspire for purification, through the intention of the Gayatri Prayer. And, it can be repeated each day before one begins there japa. Swamiji wanted all of us to memorize and to use it as part of our daily meditations.

gāyatrī mātaḥ | he guro | śrī guro |

sad buddhiṁ me prayacca |

cittaṁ me nirmalaṁ śāntaṁ prasannaṁ bhūyāt |

sarve me bhāvāḥ śudhyantām |

maītrī bhāvanayā kṣamāṁ yācituṁ ātma balaṁ me dehi |

om tat-sad brahmārpaṇam astu ||

Mother Gayatri, Oh Gurudeva, Shri Gurudeva

Grant me pure buddhi.

May my mind become immaculate, quiet, peaceful, clear and pleasant.

May all my emotions be purified.

Grant me the spiritual strength to ask for forgiveness with a sentiment of amity.

Om. That (alone is) Real.

May (all this endeavor) be (accepted as my) surrender and offering to Brahman.

Swamiji has said,

“Continue to remember this prayer throughout the day. Better would be to get a book and write this prayer a few times in the day so that you will know the purpose of the Gayatri japa. And reflect on the purpose while reciting the mantra, ‘grant me the spiritual strength to ask for forgiveness.’ Not spiritual strength to forgive – the spiritual strength to ask for forgiveness. Everyone thinks of themselves as innocent. You do not intentionally do harm to others, but you find yourself helpless by the samskaras, by the imprints, by the angers, by the self deficiencies, and insecurities that cloud your buddhi, your faculty of discrimination.

So my prayer for you is for the strength to unscrupulously dig out and face your own transgressions and along with your Gayatri practice ask for strength, spiritual strength to ask for forgiveness.”

So, this is a simple prayer that can be either quickly thought of or can also be recited by way of a paper that you will have at your meditation seat, then engage in the steps of your meditation – centering, breathing, establishing shushumna, inviting the sentiment of the divine to come forward as mantra.

Now you may have other mantras, and you say, “What about the purasha-charana that I am already doing?” Here again, you can reduce slightly, but keep it as the continuity of your present discipline that you are in the midst of. Some of you are in five years or even longer, these larger maha-purasha-charanas. So, you say, “What about the other mantras? What about the Saumya mantra?” Yes, remember it, seven times, 11 times, may be just at least check-in on that continuity of that mantra which you have already practiced. You have your own personal, Guru mantra. Yes, honor that. And, give time for yourself to be in the presence of your own Guru mantra. A special healing mantra that you are doing for someone, the Mahamrtyunjaya mantra, for a special purpose for a family member, yes then honor that as well.

You say, “Ha! I don’t have five hours. I don’t live in an ashram all the time.” Yes, be practical, but “be ambitious”, says Swami Veda. So, work out the details, you miss a day, you are sick, you are overworked, you are exhausted, you sleep longer, fine. Swaha…surrender. The next day, can’t use the excuse two days in a row, can you? Ok. Two days, alright, not three days. Just work out the details, please.

And, in that way, Guru’s Grace, Lord Ganesha’s blessings will be with us. I say, “us”, because we are all doing this practice together. And, it is not just the residents, when I say ‘us’. It is all of you, all the students that come in here, all the students in all the regions of the Globe, some in Asia, some in Europe or Africa, some in North or South America. Everyone is part of our Sangha family.

So, again, I thank you all.

We will come to the awareness of, again that inner stillness and through that stillness, that inner observation, and through that observation, that fine line, the thread of life and consciousness, that is running through this personality, that has been given the name of who we identify with, my name. Yet that name is simply a symbol of that one life force, that one consciousness force, that sings through us, as we breathe, that vibrates within us. As the nada, the vibration of the life force in each heartbeat.

So as together now, with one voice, one intention and as that collective mind field, inviting the presence of the Guru…

तस्मै श्रीगुरवे नमः॥

Tasmai śrī-gurave namaḥ.

ॐ तत्-पुरुषाय विद्महे

वक्रतुण्डाय धीमहि ।

तन्नो दन्ती प्रचोदयात्॥

om tat-puruṣāya vidmahe

vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahi ।

tanno dantī pracodayāt ॥

With the blessings of the lineage, the presence of our beloved Swami Veda, passing on his next Sangha mantra through, to us all, by way of the grace of Mother Divine, we invoke the presence of Lord Ganesha.

Enkindle the Fire of Wisdom

Blessings for Lohri and Sankranti

May this festival enlighten your life with the warmth of glory, good health, and happiness. Wishing you all a very happy and prosperous Sankranti with the fire of knowledge enkindled in your heart. Let the Lohri bonfire light up the darkness of selfishness and unbridled desire to bring wisdom, peace, and happiness to your lives. May the fire of ambition you light within fill your life with warmth and brightness of love.

We gather as a family around the altar of the meditative-heart with each Full Moon Meditation, with repentance and gratitude. We acknowledge unfulfilled desires that penetrate into each day affecting our mind’s melody and emotional tone. Let us release, relax, and let-go for the misery the world contains has come from wanting pleasure for oneself alone.

So, let us begin this New Year together, as sadhakas, initiates, members of the sangha with a commitment.  Let us resolve that this celebration of renewal will enlighten a new day of generosity and giving. Let us realize that in santosha, contentment, we embrace fully the value and purpose of life. May each day reveal all the joy the world contains comes through wishing happiness for others through love, service, and selfless actions.

Let us enkindle aparigraha, non-attachment, to understand the unique value and purpose of our life of sadhana on this path of enlightenment. For as Gurudev has said, “Wisdom or knowledge does not nullify actions, only their binding power. Wisdom and knowledge purify the way of life and action.” May our minds be purified with this sankalpa and attain a state of tranquility. May our attainments become selfless and accepted as Mother’s Grace with appreciation and devotion.

Let this festival brighten your life with warmth, happiness, health, and love. Stay safe and may Divine Love burn brightly in your heart forever.

Yours in service of the Lineage,
srb

Editor’s Note:

13 & 14 January mark as the beginning of the harvesting season in India. As the winter season ends and spring begins, the harvest festivals are celebrated all over India and are known by various names such as – Lohri, Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Bhogali Bihu, Uttarayan, and Paush Parva. This festival is a dedication to the deity Surya (the Sun God) and celebrates our relationship with nature. Thus, it is also celebrated as the beginning of the New Year because the Sun begins to move northwards in the Indian calendar on this date. Celebrations include many pujas, and sharing of gifts, particularly of one’s harvest, with one’s family, neighbours, and friends around a bonfire at night.
